  • This paper reports on a design of the footstep signal detection system using the seismic sensor. First, we analyzed the characteristics of seismic signal, seismic sensor, and the UGS(Unattended Ground Sensor) system with seismic sensors. In addition, we summarized the existing algorithms to detect footstep using the seismic sensors, and developed our low-power and high efficient footstep detection algorithm. In this paper, the sensor node operations are classified into three different steps and different resources and algorithms are applied to each step, not only to minimize the power consumption, but also to improve the performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-power design strategy to minimize energy-consumption for surveillance and reconnaissance sensor networks. The sensor network consists of many different nodes with various operations such as target detection, packet relay, video monitoring, changing protocols, and etc. Each sensor node consists of sensing, computing, communication, and power components. These components are integrated on a single or multiple boards. Therefore, the power consumption of each component can be different on various operation types. First, we identified the list of components and measured power consumption for them from the first prototype nodes. Next, we focus on which components are the main sources of energy consumption. We propose many energy-efficient approaches to reduce energy consumption for each operation type.

  • Common to use fixed-node sensor network and wireless sensor networks, unlike the recent move of the node happens frequently. These wireless sensor networks by taking into account the mobility of sensor nodes dynamically self-configurable routing protocol is required. In this paper, a fixed-node configuration and energy efficiency in the self-LEACH protocol is based on the useful movement of the nodes of the cluster is dynamically self-configuring routing protocols offer M-LEACH.

  • In this paper, a high temperature plastic film type water level sensor was developed. The high temperature film type water level sensor was manufactured by attaching a copper film to a polyimide film which can be used for a long time at 250℃, by laminating process and patterning the electrode by etching process. For the performance evaluation of the developed film type water level sensor, the temperature dependence of the capacitance was measured, and the deformation was examined after standing for 8 hours in 150℃ air. The developed film type water level sensor can be used at up to 150℃, and can be applied to electric ports and steam devices.

  • With advances in olfactory sensor technologies, the number of reports on various intelligent applications using multiple sensors (sensor arrays) are continuously increasing for fields such as medicine, environment, security, etc. For intelligent and point-of-care applications, it is not only important for the sensor technology to perform chemical or physical measurements rapidly and accurately, but it is also important for artificial intelligence technology to recognize and quantify specific chemicals or diagnose diseases such as lung cancer and diabetes. In particular, great advances in pattern recognition technologies, including deep learning algorithms, as well as sensor array technologies, are expected to enhance the potential of various types of olfactory intelligence applications, including early cancer diagnosis, drug seeking, military operations, and air pollution monitoring.

  • To operate an underwater robot in an environment with fluid flow, it is necessary to recognize the speed and direction of the fluid and implement motion control based on these characteristics. Fish have a lateral line that performs this function. In this study, to develop an artificial lateral line sensor that mimics a fish, we developed a method to measure the flow speed and the incident angle of the fluid using a pressure sensor. Several experiments were conducted, and based on the results, the tendency according to the change in the flow speed and the incident angle of the fluid was confirmed. It is believed that additional research can aid in the development of an artificial lateral line sensor.

  • For system maintenance optimization, it is necessary to establish a state information system by CBM+ including CBM and RCM, and sensor selection for CBM+ application requires system process for function model analysis at the early design stage. The study investigated the contents of CBM and CBM+, analyzed the function analysis tasks and procedures of the system, and thus presented a D-FMEA based sensor selection inference methodology at the early stage of design for CBM+ application, and established it as a D-FMEA based sensor selection inference process. The D-FMEA-based sensor inference methodology and procedure in the early design stage were presented for diesel engine sub assembly.

  • As we enter a super-aged society, studies are being conducted to reduce complications and deaths caused by falls in elderly adults. Research is being conducted on interventions for preventing falls in the elderly, wearable devices for detecting falls, and methods for improving the performance of fall detection algorithms. Wearable devices for detecting falls of the elderly generally use gyro sensors. In addition, to improve the performance of the fall detection algorithm, an artificial intelligence algorithm is applied to the x, y, z coordinate data collected from the gyro sensor. In this paper, we develop a wearable device that uses a gyro sensor, body temperature, and heart rate sensor for health management as well as fall detection for the elderly. In addition, we develop a fall detection and health management system that works with wearable devices and a guardian's mobile app to improve the performance of the fall detection algorithm and provide health information to guardians.

  • Metal-oxide-based semiconductor gas sensors are widely used because of their advantages, such as high response and simple sensing mechanism. Recently, with the rapid progress in sensor networks, computing power, and microsystem technology, sensor applications are expanding to various fields, such as food quality control, environmental monitoring, healthcare, and artificial olfaction. Therefore, the development of highly selective gas sensors is crucial for practical applications. This article reviews the developments in novel sensor design consisting of sensing films and physical and chemical filters for highly selective gas sensing. Unlike conventional sensors, the sensor structures with filters can separate the sensing and catalytic reactions into independent processes, enabling selective and sensitive gas sensing. The main objectives of this study are directed at introducing the role of various filters in gas-sensing reactions and promising sensor applications. The highly selective gas sensors combined with a functional filter can open new pathways toward the advancement of high-performance gas sensors and electronic noses.
