  • The data link layer operates reliable internode communication in the OSI reference model. Generally, the forward error correction (FEC) method is used in the data link layer of the wireless sensor network (WSN) environment that has a high frequency of errors. However, the FEC method consumes a significant amount of energy due to its high error correction rate, which negatively affects the networks' lifespan. In contrast with battery-based technology, energy is regularly recharged in the solar-powered WSN to meet higher energy needs than required for basic operation of existing nodes. By efficiently utilizing this surplus energy, the proposed energy-aware FEC method can reduce the data loss rate with no decrement of the network lifetime. The method employs a trade-off relationship between the energy and data loss rate by adjusting the parity length in the FEC method to the energy state in each node. The performance of the proposed scheme was verified through a simulation.

  • Structures like bridges or buildings need to be checked continuously to diagnose their safety. However, it is extremely difficult for the people who access such structures to check all areas directly. To overcome this problem, there is a lot of active research into structural health monitoring (SHM) with wireless sensor nodes (WSNs). In this paper, for more accurate checking of SHM with WSNs, we experimentally compare and evaluate the performance of Xenomai, which provides real-time processing under the traditional Linux kernel. For this purpose, we patch Xenomai into the traditional Linux kernel of a commercial embedded board, Raspberry Pi, and implement a task that periodically reads vibration data of the z-axis from an accelerometer in order to analyze the natural frequency of cantilever beams. Reading the data from the traditional Linux kernel with the same method, we analyze the natural frequency of the cantilever beams using Smart Office Analyzer. Finally, to review the validity of Xenomai for WSNs, we obtain vibration data on the z-axis from the accelerometer via wired network and compared and analyzed them the same way.

  • In wireless sensor networks, data dissemination protocols have been proposed for mobile sink groups that are characterized by geographically staying closely and collective movement. They usually exploit flooding technology for mobility supporting and data delivery guarantee. However, it causes the excessive energy consumption of all sensor nodes in the group region due to data delivery participation. Moreover, the costs of the flooding would become higher in proportional to the group region. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient data dissemination scheme that resolves these problems. The virtual infrastructure called a 'pipe' is used as a rendezvous area. A source delivers data to the pipe, from which member sinks in the group retrieve it directly. Simulation results showed that this solution has better performance than existing protocols in terms of energy consumption as it reduces the number of regional flooding and eliminates unnecessary data flooding.

  • This paper addresses issues to efficiently collect and aggregate data of sources within a local and adjacent region in geographic routing for wireless sensor networks. We first introduce the concept of a local sink which collects and aggregates data form source nodes in the region and delivers the aggregated data to a global sink. We also design a model to determine an optimal location of the local sink and propose a mechanism to collect data through the local sink. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism with the local sink is more efficient in terms of the energy and the data delivery ratio than the existing mechanism without the local sink in a geographic routing.

  • Distributing the routing path over the entire network is an important factor to maintain the lifetime of wireless sensor network as long as possible. This paper proposes a fuzzy routing protocol that decides a routing path based on the fuzzy control rules. The fuzzy controller receives the energy values, distances, and hop counts of possible route paths as input, and the inference engine produces the contribution factors for each of route paths. The route path with the largest contribution factor is elected as the final routing path. The nodes contained in the routing path reduce their energy after transmitting a data packet so as to prevent the same route path from being selected repeatedly. It makes the network traffic spreaded over the network resulting longer network lifetime. The computer simulations on TinyOS have shown that the fuzzy routing protocol is more energy efficient and has longer network lifetime compared to the existing routing protocols.

  • In Wireless Sensor Network, transmission errors are frequently occurred due to the node failure, battery discharge, and interference by objects. Although Directed Diffusion has been considered as a prominent Data-centric routing algorithm, it revealed some weaknesses at this kind of unexpected network errors. In order to address the problem, we proposed a radio-aware routing algorithm for improving reliability of Directed Diffusion in Wireless Sensor Networks. The proposed algorithm is aware of the network status based on the radio information of MAC and PHY layers using a cross-layer approach. The link quality and the node failure information from the acquired network status were used to decide an alternative path to provide a reliable data transmission in error-prone sensor networks. The proposed algorithm showed its effectiveness of the data delivery rate and data ratio with several simulations consisting of various error rates and the number of nodes.

  • This paper proposes a medium access control protocol for collision detection and resolution when a large number of sensor nodes transmits data in vehicle. The proposed protocol selects a random collision detection (CD) slot after data transmission, suspends its transmission and senses the channel to check whether a collision occurs by the detection of both energy level and jam signal. The proposed scheme uses multiple CD phases and in each CD phase, colliding stations are filtered and only surviving stations compete again in the next CD phase; thus, the collision resolution probability significantly increases. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol using the multiple CD phases has significantly better throughput than the conventional protocol. In addition, according to the number of CD phases and the number of CD slots per phase, the throughput aspect of the proposed scheme is investigated and the optimal parameters are derived.

  • To offer indoor location-aware services, the needs for efficient and accurate indoor localization system has been increased. In order to meet these requirement, we presented the BLIDx(Bidirectional Location ID exchange) protocol that is efficient localization system based on sensor network. The BLIDx protocol can cope with numerous mobile nodes simultaneously but the precision of the localization is too coarse because that uses cell based localization method. In this paper, in order to compensate for these disadvantage, we propose the fingerprint overlapping method by modifying a fingerprinting methods in WLAN, and localization system using proposed method was designed and implemented. Our experiments show that the proposed method is more accurate and robust to noise than fingerprinting method in WLAN. In this way, it was improved that low location precision of BLIDx protocol.

  • In this paper, In this paper, we propose a Cooperative Routing Protocol (CooRP) for supporting network convergence and transmission services efficiently in mobile ad-hoc wireless sensor networks with Rayleigh fading environments. The main contributions and features of this paper are as follows. First, the routing routes are decided on route stability based on entropy concepts using mobility of nodes within the direction guided line region to increase the operational lifetime of routes as well as reduce control overhead for route construction. Second, a cooperative data transmission strategy based on the constructed stable routing route is used to increase packet delivery ratio with advanced SNR. Third, a theoretical analysis for cooperative data transmission of the proposed CooRP with outage probability is presented. The performance evaluation of the proposed CooRP is performed via simulation using OPNET and analysis. The results of performance evaluation show that the proposed CooRP by using stable routing routes and cooperative transmission can increase packet delivery ratio efficiently.

  • In this paper, using Zigbee-based wireless sensor networks and Lego MindStorms NXT robot, a remote monitoring and navigation system for mobile robot has been developed. Mobile robot can estimate its position using encoder values of its motor, but due to the existing friction and shortage of motor power etc., error occurs. To fix this problem and obtain more accurate position of mobile robot, a ultrasound module on wireless sensor networks has been used in this paper. To overcome disadvantages of ultrasound which include straightforwardness and narrow detection coverage, we rotate moving node attached to mobile robot by $360^{\circ}$ to measure each distance from four fixed nodes. Then location of mobile robot is estimated by triangulation using measured distance values. In addition, images are sent via a network using a USB Web camera to smart phone. On smart phones we can see location of robot, and images around places where robot navigates. And remote monitoring and navigation is possible by just clicking points at the map on smart phones.
