  • Wireless sensor networks are composed of a large number of inexpensive and tiny sensors used in different areas including military, industry, agriculture, space, and environment. Fault tolerance, which is considered a challenging task in these networks, is defined as the ability of the system to offer an appropriate level of functionality in the event of failures. The present study proposed an intelligent throughput descent and distributed energy-efficient mechanism in order to improve fault tolerance of the system against soft and permanent faults. This mechanism includes determining the intelligent neighborhood radius threshold, the intelligent neighborhood nodes number threshold, customizing the base paper algorithm for distributed systems, redefining the base paper scenarios for failure detection procedure to predict network behavior when running into soft and permanent faults, and some cases have been described for handling failure exception procedures. The experimental results from simulation indicate that the proposed mechanism was able to improve network throughput, fault detection accuracy, reliability, and network lifetime with respect to the base paper.

  • The wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes are required to operate for several months with the limited system resource such as memory and power. The hardware platform of WSN has 128Kbyte program memory and 8Kbytes data memory. Also, WSN node is required to operate for several months with the two AA size batteries. The MAC, Network protocol, and small application must be operated in this WSN platform. We look around the problem of memory and power for WSN requirements. Then, we propose a new computing model of system software for WSN node. It is the Atomic Object Model (AOM) with Dual Priority Scheduling. For the verification of model, we design and implement IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with the proposed model.

  • Target-tracking algorithm based on ad hoc camera sensor networks (ACSNs) utilizes the distributed observation capability of nodes to achieve accurate target tracking. A compressed sensing-based multiple-target tracking algorithm (CSMTTA) for ACSNs is proposed in this work based on the study of camera node observation projection model and compressed sensing model. The proposed algorithm includes reconfiguration of observed signals and evaluation of target locations. It reconfigures observed signals by solving the convex optimization of L1-norm least and forecasts node group to evaluate a target location by the motion features of the target. Simulation results show that CSMTTA can recover the subtracted observation information accurately under the condition of sparse sampling to a high target-tracking accuracy and accomplish the distributed tracking task of multiple mobile targets.

  • In this paper, we propose routing protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks with a mobile sink in cluster configuration. The proposed protocol extends LEACH-ME by introducing a mobile sink. The mobile sink moves to the cluster head with the highest number of member nodes to collect sensed data from cluster heads within its vicinity, which results in reducing energy consumption in forwarding packets to the sink. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperform LEACH-ME in terms of energy efficiency.

  • One of the major challenges in the design of wireless sensor network (WSN) is to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes for prolonging the network lifetime. In the sensor network, communication is the most energy consuming event. Therefore, most of the energy saving techniques conserve energy by adjusting different parameters of the trans-receiver. Among them, one of the promising methods is the transmission power control (TPC). In this paper, we investigated the effects of the link quality based TPC scheme employed to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for energy saving. The simulation results demonstrated that the link quality based TPC scheme works effectively in conserving energy as compared to the conventional IEEE 802.15.4.

  • We present joint radio selection and relay scheme that delivers data from a source to a sink in heterogeneous stationary sensor networks consisting of various radio interfaces. The proposed scheme finds the optimal relay nodes and their corresponding radio interfaces that minimize energy consumption throughout the network while satisfying the end-to-end packet deadline requirement. We formulate the problem of routing through radio interface selection into binary integer programs, and obtain the optimal solution by solving with an optimization solver. We examine a trade-off relationship between energy consumption and packet delay based on network level simulations. We show that given the end-to-end deadline requirement, our routing algorithm finds the most energy-efficient routing path and radio interface across mesh hops. We demonstrate that the proposed routing scheme exploits the given packet delivery time to turn into network benefit of reducing energy consumption compared to routing based on single radio interface.

  • Energy is a scarce resource in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A variety of clustering protocols for WSNs, such as the zone-based stable election protocol-enhanced (ZSEP-E), have been developed for energy optimization. The ZSEP-E is a heterogeneous zone-based clustering protocol that focuses on unbalanced energy consumption with parallel formation of clusters in zones and election of cluster heads (CHs). Most ZSEP-E research has assumed probabilistic election of CHs in the zones by considering the maximum residual energy of nodes. However, studies of the diverse CH election parameters are lacking. We investigated the performance of the ZSEP-E in such scenarios using a fuzzy logic approach based on three descriptors, i.e., energy, density, and the distance from the node to the base station. We proposed an efficient ZSEP-E scheme to adapt and elect CHs in zones using fuzzy variables and evaluated its performance for different energy levels in the zones.

  • Supporting energy efficiency and load balancing in wireless sensor network is the most important issue in devising the hierarchical routing protocols. Recently, the dual layered clustering scheme with GPS was proposed for the supporting of load balancing for cluster heads but there would be many collided messages in the overlapped area between two layers. Thereby, the purpose of this paper is to reduce the collision rate in the overlapped layer by concisely distinguish them with the same number of nodes in them. For the layer partition, this paper uses an equation $x^2+ y^2{\le}(\frac{R}{\sqrt{2\pi}})^2$ to distinguish layers. By using it, the scheme could efficiently distinguish two layers and gets the balanced number of elements in them. Therefore, the proposed routing scheme could prolong the overall network life cycle about 10% compared to the previous two layered clustering scheme.

  • The current middleware, managing the bridges equipped whit sensor networks on real-time basis, merely processes the data collected from the sensor networks, In this study, we develop a very versatile middleware which mediates between sensor nodes and exclusive applications or web browsers. It collects and processes the data from the network. On database failures, it stores the data in a file and sends them to the database at a proper speed considering the rate of the database system when the database is restored. Lastly, in order to notice abnormality of the bridge to the operators when some problems occur in the bridge, we propose a mechanism for producing alarm signals.

  • There are some trials to adopt the RFID/USN technologies at container terminals for effective terminal operations. In this paper, we propose a realtime location recognition method for stacked containers under the assumption that each container has a wireless sensor node to measure the RSSI values from neighbor nodes. We develope an RSSI based location algorithm with performance evaluations by RSSI measurement and application program implementation.
