  • The wireless sensor network (WSN) based ECG and body temperature measuring system for ubiquitous health-care were designed and developed. The system was composed of a wireless sensor network node, base station and server computer for the continuous monitoring of ECG signals and body temperatures of patients at home or hospital. ECG signal and body temperature data, important vital signals which are commonly used in clinical and trauma care, were displayed on a graphical user interface (GUI). The data transfer from sensor nodes on patients' body to server computer was accomplished through a base-station connected to a server computer using Zigbee compatible IEEE802.15.4 standard wireless communication. Real-time as well as historical, ECG data of elderly persons or patients, can also be retrieved and played back to assist the diagnosis. The ubiquitous health care system presented in this study can effectively reduce social medical expenses, which will be increased greatly in the coming aging society.

  • In some wireless sensor networks, each wireless sensor network has its own target lifetime (desired lifetime after deployment). However, satisfying the target lifetime is not a trivial problem since the nodes in wireless sensor networks often rely on batteries as their power source. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient routing algorithm that satisfies the target-lifetime requirement of a wireless sensor network. The proposed routing algorithm not only finds energy efficient paths but also optimizes the sensing rate of each sensor node. Through simulation, we compare the performance of the proposed scheme with several other existing algorithms.

  • A new application area in which wireless sensor networks are applied requires the performance of more elaborated and complicated task and the completion of those tasks within a time limit. Until now, it is, however, insufficient to do research on the mechanism of handling interrupt based on real-time sensor operating systems which carefully consider the limitation of resources of sensor nodes and the property of tasks which is executed in a wireless sensor network area. In this paper, the requirements satisfying real-time in sensor operating systems are analyzed and based on this, a system is designed and implemented. In addition, the proposed mechanisms are confirmed by several verification methods, and the efficiency of the performance and the satisfaction of those requirements for real-time are verified by simulation.

  • In this paper, we suggest the active multi-agent middleware for the sensor network application. For this, firstly we design and implement the active rule based mobile agent middleware. The mobile agent in the proposed system visits the destination sensor nodes according to the migration list offered by the meta table in the name space of the naming agent, acquires and transmits sensor data according to the purpose and needs through the active rules, and directly executes the actions corresponding to the optional events(changed sensor data and/or time etc.). And then, we show the potential applicability of the active rule based mobile agent middleware in various active sensor networks through the interaction with the rule base system and context database system.

  • Survelliance and Reconnaissance Sensor Network(SRSN) which can collect various tactical information within battlefield in real time plays an important role in NCW environment, of sensor to shooter architecture. However, due to the resource-limited characteristics of sensor nodes and the intrinsic attributes of sensor network such as wireless communication, the SRSN may be vulnerable to various attacks compared to traditional networks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new group key management scheme to guarantee confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authentication during the operation of the SRSN. Proposed scheme generates and distributes the group key based on the topological characteristic of the SRSN and the probabilistic key sharing. The communication cost for distributing the group key is O(logn).

  • Wireless sensor networks consist of small, autonomous devices with wireless networking capabilities. In order to further increase the applicability in real world applications, minimizing energy consumption is one of the most critical issues. Therefore, accurate energy model is required for the evaluation of wireless sensor networks. In this paper we analyze the power consumption for wireless sensor networks. To develop the power consumption model, we have measured the power characteristics of commercial Kmote node based on TelosB platforms running TinyOS. Based on our model, the estimated lifetime of a battery powered sensor node can use about 6.9 months for application of human detection using PIR sensors. This result indicates that sensor nodes can be used in a monitoring system for elderly living alone.

  • Sensor nodes in ubiquitous sensor networks require autonomous replacement of deteriorated gas sensors with reserved sensors, which has led us to develop an encapsulation technique to avoid poisoning the reserved sensors and an autonomous activation technique to replace a deteriorated sensor with a reserved sensor. Encapsulations of $In_2O_3$ nanoparticles with poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) or polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as gas barrier layers are reported. The EVOH or PVDF films are used for an encapsulation of $In_2O_3$ as a sensing material and are effective in blocking $In_2O_3$ from contacting formaldehyde (HCHO) gas. The activation process of $In_2O_3$ by removing the EVOH through heating is effective. However, the thermal decomposition of the PVDF affects the property of the $In_2O_3$ in terms of the gas reactivity. The response of the sensor to HCHO gas after removing the EVOH is 26%, which is not significantly different with the response of 28% in a reference sample that was not treated at all. We believe that the selection of gas barrier materials for the encapsulation and activation of $In_2O_3$ should be considered because of the ill effect the byproduct of thermal decomposition has on the sensing materials and other thermal properties of the barrier materials.

  • Recent development in visual sensor technologies has encouraged various researches on adding imaging capabilities to sensor networks. Video data are bigger than other sensor data, so it is essential to manage the amount of image data efficiently. In this paper, a new method of video traffic estimation is proposed for efficient traffic management of visual sensor networks. In the proposed method, a first order autoregressive model is used for modeling the traffic with the consideration of the characteristics of video traffics acquired from visual sensors, and a Kalman filter algorithm is used to estimate the amount of video traffics. The proposed method is computationally simple, so it is proper to be applied to sensor nodes. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method is simple but estimate the video traffics exactly by less than 1% of the average.

  • Sensor networks applications can be employed by a vast range of applications. Environmental information monitoring systems and ecosystem surveillance are representative application using sensor networks. But, limited battery capacity of sensor node is a key feature that determines lifetime of networks and system. It also affects quality of collected data. We recognized factors that affects lifetime of environment sensor nodes through the experiment of environment information system deployed over campus. We will show useful proposals for future construction of sensor network application systems.

  • Home automation networks are good environments for merging sensor networks and consumer electronics technologies. It is very important to reduce the energy consumption of each sensor node because sensor nodes operate with limited power based on a battery that cannot be easily replaced. One of the primary mechanisms for achieving low energy operation in energy-constrained wireless sensor networks is the duty-cycle operation, but this operation has several problems. For example, unnecessary energy consumption occurs during synchronization between transmission schedules and sleep schedules. In addition, a low duty-cycle usually causes more performance degradation, if the network becomes congested. Therefore, an appropriate control scheme is required to solve these problems. In this paper, we propose UDC (Unsynchronized Duty-cycle Control), which prevents energy waste caused by unnecessary preamble transmission and avoids congestion using duty-cycle adjustment. In addition, the scheme adjusts the starting point of the duty-cycle in order to reduce sleep delay. Our simulation results show that UDC improves the reliability and energy efficiency while reducing the end-to-end delay of the unsynchronized duty-cycled MAC (Media Access Control) protocol in sensor-based home automation networks.
