Automatic detection of tool breakage during NC machining is a key issue not only for improving productivity but to implement the unattended manufacturing system. In this paper, we develop a vibration sensor-based tool breakage detection system for NC milling processes. The system obtains the time-domain vibration signal from the sensor attached on the spindle bracket of our CNC machine and declares tool failures through the on-line monitoring schemes. For on-line detection, our approach is to use the PSC(statistical process control) methods being increasingly used for on-line process control. The main thrust of this paper is to propose and compare the performance of SPC methods including : a) X-bar control scheme, b) S control scheme, c)EWMA (exponentially weighted moving average) scheme, and d) AEWMA (adaptive exponentially weighted moving average) scheme. The performance of the control schemes are compared in terms of the type 1 and 2 error calculated from the experiment data.

In many security monitoring contexts, the performance or efficiency of surveillance sensors/networks based on a single sensor type may be limited by environmental conditions, like illumination change. It is well known that different modes of sensors can be complementary, compensating for failures or limitations of individual sensor types. From a location analysis and modeling perspective, a challenge is how to locate different modes of sensors to support security monitoring. A coverage-based optimization model is proposed as a way to simultaneously site k different sensor types. This model considers common coverage among different sensor types as well as overlapping coverage for individual sensor types. The developed model is used to site sensors in an urban area. Computational results show that common and overlapping coverage can be modeled simultaneously, and a rich set of solutions exists reflecting the tradeoff between common and overlapping coverage.

Energy-efficient routing protocol is an important task in a wireless sensor network that is used for monitoring and control by wirelessly collecting information obtained from sensor nodes deployed in various environments. Various routing techniques have been studied for this, but it is also necessary to consider WSN environments with specific situations and conditions. In particular, due to topographical characteristics or specific obstacles, a hole where sensor nodes are not deployed may exist in most WSN environments, which may result in inefficient routing or routing failures. In this case, the geographical routing-based hall bypass routing method using GPS functions will form the most efficient path, but sensors with GPS functions have the disadvantage of being expensive and consuming energy. Therefore, we would like to find the boundary node of the hole in a WSN environment with holes through minimal sensor function and propose hole bypass routing through boundary line formation.
Recently, the structural failures due to fatigue occur frequently with the increase of size of ships and offshore structures. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the residual strength are very important. Currently, the smart materials technology has demonstrated a variety of possibilities for a diagnosis of structural strength and structural health condition for large structures. The benefits and feature of the MFC sensor are more flexible, durable and reliable than conventional smart material. In this study, Micro Fiber Composite (MFC) sensor for the measurement of stress intensity factor (SIF) of two dimensional cracks induced in a structure is developed. Two MFC sensors are placed in the vicinity of the crack tip close to each other with the crack tip in between them. The SIFs of Mode I($K_I$) as well as of Mode II($K_{II}$) based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. In this study, the SIF values measured by MFC sensors are compared with the theoretical results and measured value.

This paper describes an active fault-tolerant control system for an induction motor drive that propels an Electrical Vehicle(EV) or a Hybrid one(HEV). The proposed system adaptively reorganizes itself in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain the best control performance given the complement of remaining sensors. Moreover, the developed system takes into account the controller transition smoothness in terms of speed and torque transients. In this paper which is the sequel of (Diallo et al., 2004), we propose to introduce more advanced and intelligent control techniques to improve the global performance of the fault-tolerant drive for automotive applications(e.g. EVs or HEVs). In fact, two control techniques are chosen to illustrate the consistency of the proposed approach: sliding mode for encoder-based control; and fuzzy logics for sensorless control. Moreover, the system control reorganization is now managed by a fuzzy decision system to improve the transitions smoothness. Simulations tests, in terms of speed and torque responses, have been carried out on a 4-kW induction motor drive to evaluate the consistency and the performance of the proposed fault-tolerant control approach.
About 70% of Korea consists of mountainous areas, and during the construction of many roads and railroads, cut slopes are inevitably formed. The rainy season, frost heaving in winter, and thawing in spring can all cause rockfalls and landslides. The failure of these slopes is increasing every year, causing damage to vehicles, personal injury and even death. To protect people and property from such damage, a real-time monitoring system is needed to detect the early stages of slope failures. The GMG placed TRS sensor units in the slopes to monitor them in real-time. But due to its reliance on data lines and power lines, the system is vulnerable to lightning damage. The whole system can be damaged by a single lighting strike. Consequently, for the purposes of this paper we propose the use of the Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) which follows the IEEE 802.1.4. By using the USN system we can minimize lightning damage and can monitor the movement of the slopes consistently.
The data collected by the In-Situ Decommissioning (ISD) sensors are time-specific, age-specific, and developmental stage-specific. Research has been done on the stream data collected by ISD testbed in the recent few years to seek both frequent episodes and abnormal frequent episodes. Frequent episodes in the data stream have confirmed the daily cycle of the sensor responses and established sequences of different types of sensors, which was verified by the experimental setup of the ISD Sensor Network Test Bed. However, the discovery of abnormal frequent episodes remained a challenge because these abnormal frequent episodes are very small signals and may be buried in the background noise of voltage and current changes. In this work, we proposed Advanced Data Analytics (ADA) methods that are applied to the baseline data to identify frequent episodes and extended our approach by adding more features extracted from the baseline data to discover abnormal frequent episodes, which may lead to the early indicators of ISD system failures. In the study, we have evaluated our approach using the baseline data, and the performance evaluation results show that our approach is able to discover frequent episodes as well as abnormal frequent episodes conveniently.

The O&M (Operation and Maintenance) phase of offshore plants with a long life cycle requires heavy charges and more efforts than the construction phase, and the occurrence of an accident of an offshore plant causes catastrophic damage. So previous studies have focused on design for reliability, and recently many studies have dealt with a maintenance system to prevent unexpected failures. Nowadays due to the emerging ICTs (Information Communication Technologies) and sensor technologies, it is possible to send health monitoring information of important equipment to administrator of an offshore plant in real time, which leads to having much concern on condition based maintenance policy or predictive maintenance. In this study, we have reviewed previous studies associated with condition-based maintenance of offshore plants, and introduced the approaches predicting failures of the compressor which is one of essential mechanical devices in LNG FPSO.

This paper proposes a new nonlinear filtering algorithm that combines the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and the finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The proposed filter is called the unscented Kalman/FIR hybrid filter (UKFHF). In the UKFHF algorithm, the UKF is used as the main filter, which produces state estimates under ideal conditions. When failures of the UKF are detected, the FIR filter is operated. Using the output of the FIR filter, the UKF is reset and rebooted. In this way, the UKFHF recovers from failures. The proposed UKFHF is applied to indoor human localization using wireless sensor networks. Through simulations, the performance of the UKFHF is demonstrated in comparison with that of the UKF.
