  • According to the changes of the city's paradigm, the demand on u-City increases rapidly. u-City has been built at 54 areas in Korea (as of May 2009). One of the important determinants of success or failure in the increasing of u-City is how to provide u-Services. Most current u-Services are Sensor Network-based monitoring services to manage urban infrastructure. u-GIS is one of fundamental requirements to implement 'any time and any where' u-Service which covers the essential meaningful term "ubiquitous". Hence, in this paper, we 1) describe the definition of the spatial awareness, 2) discuss how to converge (Spatial Embedding) among different spatial data : topographic spatial data, sensor spatial data, and more, 3) bring forth an advanced form of u-Service, 4) analyze the state-of-the-art u-GIS techniques.

  • Among many fiber optic sensors, FBG sensors are being studied more actively than any other sensor due to good multiplexing capabilities. Recently, the application fields of FBG sensors are mainly focused on the composite materials through embedding rather than attaching on the surface. However, there are many limitations on the embedding FBG sensors into composite materials because of the birefringence effects which is induced when FBG sensors are not embedded parallel to the reinforcing fiber. In this study, the fabrication method of FBG sensors with various grating length that are easy to fabricate with good multiplexing capabilities and more stable from the birefringence effects are investigated. The signal characteristics of the FBG sensors are also verified through the cure monitoring of 2 kinds of composite materials.

  • The Fibre-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is broadly accepted as a structural health monitoring device for Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) materials by either embedding into or bonding onto the structures. The accuracy of the strain measured by using the FBG sensor is highly dependent on the bonding characteristics among the bare optical fibre, protective coating, adhesive layer and host material. In general, the signal extracted from the embedded FBG sensor should reflect the straining condition of the host structure. This paper presents a theoretical model to evaluate the differential strains between the bare fibre and host material with different adhesive thickness and modulus of the protective coating of the embedded FBG sensor.

  • Ever since the nonlinearity of machine tool dynamics was established, researchers attempted to make use of this fact to devise better monitoring, diagnostics and control system, which were hitherto based on linear models. Theory of chaos which explains many nonlinear phenomena comes handy for furthering the analysis using nonlinear model. In this study, measuring system will be constructed using multi-sensor (Tool Dynamometer, Acoustic Emission) in end milling process. Then, it will be verified that cutting force is low-dimensional chaos by calculating Lyapunov exponents. Fractal dimension, embedding dimension. And it will be investigated that the relation between characteristic parameter calculated from sensor signal and tool wear.

  • In this paper, the transverse strain was measured using polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating(PMFBG) sensor. PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excidmer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To find the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurement, The wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) was used to construct the PMFBG sensor system. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain.

  • A sensor registry system (SRS) provides semantic metadata about a sensor based on location information of a mobile device in order to solve a problem of interoperability between a sensor and a device. However, if the GPS of the mobile device is incorrectly received, the SRS receives incorrect sensor information and has a problem in that it cannot connect with the sensor. This paper proposes a dual collaboration strategy based on geographical embedding and LSTM-based path prediction to improve the probability of successful requests between mobile devices and sensors to address this problem and evaluate with the Monte Carlo approach. Through experiments, it was shown that the proposed method can compensate for location abnormalities and is an effective multicasting mechanism.

  • In this study, we fabricated transparent resistive strain sensor by embedding silver nanowire in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate to sense the finger bending motion electrically. Using bluetooth as wireless data transfer system, strain data was transferred to computer and smart phone application enabling near field communication. Additionally, we made a program translating resistance change by finger motion strain to save images and confirmed that it worked at application and computer.

  • It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.

  • We present a simple method to watermark three-dimensional (3D) triangular meshes that have been generated from the depth data of the Kinect sensor. In contrast to previous methods, which maintain the shape of 3D triangular meshes and decide the embedding place, requiring calculations of vertices and their neighbors, our method is based on selecting one of the coordinate axes. To maintain shape, we use discrete wavelet transform and constant regularization. We know that the watermarking system needs the information to be embedded; we used a text to provide that information. We used geometry attacks such as rotation, scales, and translation, to test the performance of this watermarking system. Performance parameters in this paper include the vertices error rate (VER) and bit error rate (BER). The results from the VER and BER indicate that using a correction term before the extraction process makes our system robust to geometry attacks.
