Synchronization MAC Protocol such as S-MAC and T-MAC utilize duty cycling technique which peroidically operate wake-up and sleep state for reducing energy consumption. But synchronization MAC showed low energy efficiency because of additional control packets. For better energy consumption, Asychronization MAC protocols are suggested. For example, B-MAC, and X-MAC protocol adopt Low Power Listening (LPL) technique with CSMA algorithm. All nodes in these protocols joining a network with independent duty cycle schedules without additional synchronization control packets. For this reason, asynchronous MAC protocol improve energy efficiency. In this study, a low-power MAC protocol which is based on X-MAC protocol for wireless sensor network is proposed for better energy efficiency. For this protocol, we suggest preamble numbering, and virtual-synchronization technique between sender and receive node. Using TelosB mote for evaluate energy efficiency.

In dense deployments of sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks, the MAC protocol has challenges to solve problems such as reducing delivery delay and reducing energy consumption. To solve these problems lots of protocols are suggested. This paper proposed a sensor nodes' residual energy based wake-up control mechanism, in which each node decides whether it wakes up or stays in sleep mode to save energy consumption by reducing unnecessary idle listening. The main idea of the wake-up control mechanism is to save node's energy consumption. The proposed wake-up control mechanism is based on the RI-MAC protocol, which is one of the receiver-initiated MAC protocols. A receiver node in the proposed mechanism periodically wakes up and broadcasts a beacon signal based on the energy status of the node. A receiver node also adjusts wake-up period based on the traffics. Results have shown that the proposed MAC protocol outperformed RI-MAC protocol in the terms of energy consumption.

This paper proposes Co-MAC (Coexistence MAC), an energy efficient medium access control protocol designed for large-scale sensor networks. In Co-MAC protocol, an overall network is divided into independent subnets, and each subnet orthogonally operates on time line in a temporal fashion. The basic idea of Co-MAC is to evenly distribute sensor nodes in a certain geographic area based on subnets to minimize overhearing which means the reception of unnecessary data packets from neighboring nodes. In our simulation, it was observed that energy efficiency of Co-MAC outperforms conventional MAC protocols under the given conditions.

In Wireless Sensor Networks the Medium access control (MAC) protocol has many challenges to solve such as reducing energy consumption, supporting QoS(quality of service) fairness, and reducing delivery delay. This paper proposed a low-delay supporting MAC protocol in multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks. The proposed protocol uses the RB(rapid beacon) frame for reducing delivery delay. The RB frame is a modified IEEE 802.15.4 beacon frame. For sender adaptive-wakeup, the RB frame includes a seed number for determining of a receiver wakeup time. And for next hop receiver adaptive-wakeup, the RB frame includes the length of remaining data packet information. Results showed that our LD-MAC protocol outperformed other protocol in terms of data packet delivery delay.

Wireless Sensor Networks are widely applied for organizing real-time monitoring systems. Unlike general kinds of sensor networks, it is important to preferential send emergency data to the control server when urgent events are occurred. But IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol which is generally deployed for wireless sensor network does not support algorithm for urgency data handling. Therefore, we proposed a MAC protocol which consider the priority for the urgency data handling.
In this paper, we analytically evaluate packet delay and energy consumption of S-MAC protocol with a modified Markov chain model. Although some models, based on IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol, to analyze the S-MAC protocol in wireless sensor network (WSN) have been proposed, they fail to consider the differences in architecture between the S-MAC and the 802.11 MAC. Therefore, by reflecting the significant features in the S-MAC function, we model the operation of S-MAC protocol, and derive its packet delay and energy consumption in single-hop WSN. Numerical results show the delay and the dissipated energy at various duty cycle values according to offered load, where a practical mote is used.
In this paper, we proposed TASL-MAC, a medium-access control (MAC) protocol for wireless sensor networks. In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes are usually deployed in a special environment, are assigned with long-term work, and are supported by a limited battery. As such, reducing the energy consumption becomes the primary concern with regard to wireless sensor networks. At the same time, reducing the latency in multi-hop data transmission is also very important. In the existing research, sensor nodes are expected to be switched to the sleep mode in order to reduce energy consumption. However, the existing proposals tended to assign the sensors with a fixed Sleep/Listening schedule, which causes unnecessary idle listening problems and conspicuous transmission latency due to the diversity of the traffic-load in the network. TASL-MAC is designed to dynamically adjust the duty listening time based on traffic load. This protocol enables the node with a proper data transfer rate to satisfy the application's requirements. Meanwhile, it can lead to much greater power efficiency by prolonging the nodes' sleeping time when the traffic. We evaluate our implementation of TASL-MAC in NS-2. The evaluation result indicates that our proposal could explicitly reduce packet delivery latency, and that it could also significantly prolong the lifetime of the entire network when traffic is low.

As underwater environment monitoring system's interest has increased, the research is proceeding about underwater acoustic sensor network. Underwater sensor network can be applicable to many fields, such as underwater environment monitoring, underwater resource exploration, oceanic data collection, military purposes, etc. It is essential to define the PHY-MAC protocol for revitalization of the underwater acoustic sensor network which is available utilization in a variety of fields. However, underwater acoustic sensor network has to implement by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics, such as limited bandwidth, multi-path, fading, long propagation delay caused by low acoustic speed. In this paper, we define frequency of adjusted PHY protocol, network topology, MAC protocol, PHY-MAC interface, data frame format by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics. We also present system configuration of our implementation and evaluate performance based on our implementation with test in real underwater field.

One of the most important issues in Wireless Sensor Networks is to save energy of the sensor node. But transmission latency is also the problem to solve for some applications such as military surveillance, object tracking. In these applications sensor node needs to send lots of data in limited time when an even such as object appearance occurs. So a delay efficient data transmission method is required. In this paper we propose a MAC protocol adequate for those applications. This paper proposed a low delay data transmission mechanism for military surveillance in wireless sensor networks. In the MAC protocol, a receiver node sends another beacon frame to sender node after receiving data packet. Using this second beacon frame, fast hop-to-hop transmission can be performed. Results have shown that the proposed MAC control mechanism outperformed RI-MAC protocol in the terms of latency.
