  • Localization is the most important functions in mobile robots. There are so many approaches to realize this essential function in wheel based mobile robots, but it is not easy to find similar examples in small underwater robots. It is presented the sonar localization system using ubiquitous sensor network for a fish robot in this paper. A fish robot uses GPS and sonar system to find exact localization. Although GPS is essential tool to obtain positional information, this device doesn't provide reasonable resolution in localization. To obtain more precise localization information, we use several Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN) motes with sonar system. Experimental results show that a fish robot obtains more detailed positional information.

  • In sensor network environment, it is very important to localize sensor nodes. In order to know the position of nodes without GPS signals, the anchor robot approach is representatively used. Therefore, in this paper, we propose 4-Robot Localization Scheme (4RLS) that uses four mobile robots to efficiently localize sensor nodes for the fast time. Then, we show the improved performance of 4RLS in comparison with previously used three robot scheme through the real implementation and analysis.

  • Given the increased interest in ubiquitous computing, wireless sensor network has been researched widely. The localization service which provides the location information of mobile user, is one of important service provided by sensor network. Many methods to obtain the location information of mobile user have been proposed. However, these methods were developed for only one mobile user so that it is hard to extend for multiple mobile users. If multiple mobile users start the localization process concurrently, there could be interference of beacon or ultrasound that each mobile user transmits. In the paper, we propose APL(Adaptive Power Control based Resource Allocation Technique for Efficient Localization Technique), the localization technique for multiple mobile nodes based on adaptive power control in mobile wireless sensor networks. In APL, collision of localization between sensor nodes is prevented by forcing the mobile node to get the permission of localization from anchor nodes. For this, we use RTS(Ready To Send) packet type for localization initiation by mobile node and CTS(Clear To Send) packet type for localization grant by anchor node. NTS(Not To Send) packet type is used to reject localization by anchor node for interference avoidance and STS(Start To Send) for synchronization between 모anchor nodes. At last, the power level of sensor node is controled adaptively to minimize the affected area. The experimental result shows that the number of interference between nodes are increased in proportion to the number of mobile nodes and APL provides efficient localization.

  • Most autonomous mobile robots view things only in front of them. As a result they may collide against objects moving from the side or behind. To overcome the problem we have built an Active Omni-directional Range Sensor that can obtain omni-directional depth data by a laser conic plane and a conic mirror. Also we proposed a self-localization algorithm of mobile robot in unknown environment by fusion of Odometer and Active Omn-directional Range Sensor.

  • If the ubiquitous computing times come before long, Context Awareness will be prominent among improved computing functions which are serviced to user. It is the very sense network, new technology, that makes it possible to recognize circumstances. In a lot of research projects about sensor network, this paper proposes the efficient method of localization for sensor network. I propose the possibility of localization using wireless RSS with no modification of hardware for sensor node and then suggest the limitation factors of method for efficiently improving performance.

  • Global localization is one of the essential issues for mobile robot navigation. In this study, an indoor global localization method is proposed which uses a Kinect sensor and a monocular upward-looking camera. The proposed method generates an environment map which consists of a grid map, a ceiling feature map from the upward-looking camera, and a spatial feature map obtained from the Kinect sensor. The method selects robot pose candidates using the spatial feature map and updates sample poses by particle filter based on the grid map. Localization success is determined by calculating the matching error from the ceiling feature map. In various experiments, the proposed method achieved a position accuracy of 0.12m and a position update speed of 10.4s, which is robust enough for real-world applications.

  • In this paper, we developed an underwater localization system for underwater robot docking using the electromagnetic wave attenuation model. Electromagnetic waves are generally known to be impossible to use in water environment. However, according to the conclusions of the previous studies on the attenuation characteristics in underwater, the attenuation pattern is uniform and its model was accurately proposed and verified in 3-dimensional space via the omnidirectional antenna. In this paper, a docking structure and localization sensor system are developed for a widely used cone type docking mechanism. First, we fabricated electromagnetic wave range sensor transmit modules. And a mobile sensor node is equipped with unmanned underwater vehicle(UUV)s. The mobile node senses the four different signal strength (RSS: Received Signal Strength) from fixed nodes, and the obtained RSS data are transformed to each distance information using the 3-Dimensional EM wave attenuation model. Then, the relative localization between the docking area and underwater robot can be achieved according to optimization algorithm. Finally, experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed localization system for the docking induction by comparing the errors in the actual position of the mobile node and the theoretical position through the model.

  • The proposed algorithm to be explained in this paper is the localization technique using directional antenna. Here, it is assumed that anchor node has the ability to transfer the azimuth of each sector using GPS modules, sector antenna, and the digital compass. In the conventional sensor network, the majority of localization algorithms were capable of estimating the position information of the sensor node by knowing at least 3 position values of anchor nodes. However, this paper has proposed localization algorithm that estimates the position of nodes to continuously move with sensor nodes and traveling nodes. The proposed localization mechanisms have been simulated in the Matlab. The simulation results show that our scheme performed better than other mechanisms (e.g. MCL, DV-distance).

  • In this paper, the performance analysis of optics-based sensor node localization using ToF (Time of Flight) scheme is conducted. Generally, the position of the sensor node is calculated on the base station. And the base station scans neighboring sensor nodes with a laser. The laser which is reflected from one sensor node, however, can be reached to the base station at different angles according to the scanning resolution. This means that the error of the reached angle can increase and one node may be recognized as different nodes. Also the power of laser can decrease because the laser signal spread. Thus the sensor node which is located at a long distance from the base station cannot be detected. In order to overcome these problems which can be occurred in localization using ToF, the beam spot, the scanning resolution, the size of reflector and the power of laser at the sensor node were analyzed. It can be expected that the consequence of analysis can be provided in acquisition of accurate position of sensor node and construction of optics-based sensor node localization system.

  • In many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, the information transmitted by an individual entity or node is of limited use without the knowledge of its location. Research in node localization is mostly geared towards multi-hop range-free localization algorithms to achieve accuracy by minimizing localization errors between the node's actual and estimated position. The existing localization algorithms are focused on improving localization accuracy without considering efficiency in terms of energy costs and algorithm convergence time. In this work, we show that our proposed localization scheme, called DV-maxHop, can achieve good accuracy and efficiency. We formulate the multi-objective optimization functions to minimize localization errors as well as the number of transmission during localization phase. We evaluate the performance of our scheme using extensive simulation on several anisotropic and isotropic topologies. Our scheme can achieve dual objective of accuracy and efficiency for various scenarios. Furthermore, the recently proposed algorithms require random uniform distribution of anchors. We also utilized our proposed scheme to compare and study some practical anchor distribution schemes.
