A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.
This paper presents a mew design of an inductive position sensing system with high sensitivity. The designed system consists of the driving coils, position-detecting coils, and closed loop formed magnetic blocks. To obtain high sensitivity we design a symmetric and closed loop type measuring system with small air-gaps. The elements that affect the system characteristics are turn ratio, excitation frequency, air-gap size, capacitance effect, and load resistance. By experimental investigation, the influences of these elements are examined and the system parameters are selected. The sensitivity of the newly designed system is greater than 2800mV/(V mm) and the linearity error is below${\pm}0.01%; in; the; range; of; {\pm}200{\mu}m$.
In this paper, a positioning method of distributed power system is proposed to minimize the average voltage variation of a DC microgrid through voltage sensitivity analysis. The voltage sensitivity under a droop control depends on the position of the distributed power system. In order to acquire a precise voltage sensitivity under a droop control, we analyzed the power flow by introducing a droop bus with the considerations of the droop characteristics. The results of the positioning method are verified through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.
The research and applications of numerical methods of design optimization on structural dynamic behaviors are presented in this paper. The emphasis is focused on the dynamic design optimization of aerospace structures, particularly those composed of composite laminate and sandwich plates. The methods of design modeling, sensitivity analysis on structural dynamic responses, and the optimization solution approaches are presented. The numerical examples of sensitivity analysis and dynamic structural design optimization are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the numerical methods.
The direct design modification of problematic component is disallowed in order to sacrifice other major factors such as a stability or a major performance. So, the best design policy is to risvise the immature structural medchanism under the minimal design change as soon as possible. For this paper presents a new design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility rtio (TR) of response acceleration to find a proper candidate for the minimal design modification. The new sensitivity analysis is based on the fact that the sensitivity of TR over a small design change is inversly proportinal to the magnitude of TR. The theory of proposed design sensitivity analysis is simulated with the variance of TR over a dynamic change. Then, new methodology is appplied for a linear elastic specimen to detect the most sensitive node over a design change using measured accleration data during uni-axial vibration test, The physical verification of the sensitivity method is conducted on the CAE model of a linear elastic specimen by adding concentration mass and the vibration fatigue of the simple specimen is analyzed to estimate the relationship between fatigue behaviors and sensitivity consequences.
In this paper sensitivity analysis of temperature on special day electricity demand of land and Jeju Island is performed. The basic electricity demand per 3 hours is defined as electricity demand that reflects the GDP effect without the temperature influence. The temperature sensitivity per 3 hours is calculated through the relationship between special day electricity demand normalized to basic electricity demand and temperature. In the future, forecast error will be improved if the temperature sensitivity per 3 hours is applied to the special day load forecasting.

One of the efficient and useful tools to achieve the optimal design of structures is employing the sensitivity analysis in the finite element model. In the numerical optimization process, often the semi-analytical method is used for estimation of derivatives of the objective function with respect to design variables. Numerical methods for calculation of sensitivities are susceptible to the step size in design parameters perturbation and this is one of the great disadvantages of these methods. This article uses complex variables method to calculate the sensitivity analysis and combine it with discrete sensitivity analysis. Finally, it provides a new method to obtain the sensitivity analysis for linear structures. The use of complex variables method for sensitivity analysis has several advantages compared to other numerical methods. Implementing the finite element to calculate first derivatives of sensitivity using this method has no complexity and only requires the change in finite element meshing in the imaginary axis. This means that the real value of coordinates does not change. Second, this method has the lower dependency on the step size. In this research, the process of sensitivity analysis calculation using a finite element model based on complex variables is explained for linear problems, and some examples that have known analytical solution are solved. Results obtained by using the presented method in comparison with exact solution and also finite difference method indicate the excellent efficiency of the proposed method, and it can predict the sustainable and accurate results with the several different step sizes, despite low dependence on step size.
Since biosynthesis of lignin peroxidase from Phanerochaete chrysosporium was known to be sensitive to shear, it is interesting to understand the effects of the shear sensitivity for the overproduction of lignin peroxidase. In stirred-tank fermentor, the shear-sensitivity in lignin peroxidase biosynthesis was quantified by using Kolmogorov length scale. It was found that agitation at 80$\mu$m Kolmogorov length scale is advantageous for the production of lignin peroxidase from P. chrysosporium. To overcome the shear sensitivity in lignin peroxidase biosynthesis caused by the agitation,P. chrysosporium was immobilized on various solid carriers. The nylon-immobilized P. chrysosporium was chosen in the present study as a way to overcome the shear sensitivity at the ranges of above 50$\mu$m Kolmogorov length scale. The adhesion force between immobilized cell and carrier can be predicted by thermodynamic approach and used as a criteria to select an adequate carrier materials for immobilization.
In applying the spectral stochastic finite element methods to the frequency response analysis, the conventional methods are known to give unstable and inaccurate results near the natural frequencies. To address this issue, a new sensitivity based stabilized formulation for stochastic frequency response analysis is proposed in this paper. The main difference over the conventional spectral methods is that the polynomials of random variables are applied to both numerator and denominator in approximating the harmonic response solution. In order to reflect the resonance behavior of the structure, the denominator polynomials is constructed by utilizing the natural frequency sensitivity and the random mode superposition. The numerator is approximated by applying a polynomial chaos expansion, and its coefficients are obtained through the Galerkin or the spectral projection method. Through various numerical studies, it is seen that the proposed method improves accuracy, especially in the vicinities of structural natural frequencies compared to conventional spectral methods.
