  • Frequent outbreaks of foodborne illness have been increasing the awareness of agro-food safety. Conventional methods for pathogen detection and identification are labor.intensive and take days to complete. The increasing use of rapid food safety testing is receiving more and more attention. The major reason for this trend is that the food industry requires quick and accurate results. The rapid detection of contaminants in food is critical for ensuring the safety of consumers. Recent advances in technology make detection and identification faster, more sensitive and more specific than traditional method. In this paper, technology trends and recent developments in rapid methods for agro-food safety are discussed.

  • This paper explores the relatilonship between state level environmental regulations and stocking and location decisions in the U.S livestock and poultry industry (beef, chicken, dairy and hogs), Rather than conduct this analysis on a species by species basis, the overall size of the livestock industry(expressed in animal units) and the size of Industry found on large, medium and small operations by state (48) and over time (29 years), which is panel data analysis, Generally, regulations seem to be induced by the structural change of industry; when industry creates externalities, regulators try to address them with policy tools to internalize them, Written regulatory stringency may not effect behavioral change; rather the state's willingness to enforce regulations seems to have a measurable influence. However, in the presence of rapid structural change, industry location is affected by written regulatory stringency. Policy enforcement activity was shown to influence inventory decisions in general and larger operations were found to be more sensitive to willingness to enforce than smaller operations.

  • With the increase in family income in Korea and the improving quality of life, there is a rapid growth in the restaurant industry. Therefore there is a demand for quality service in this industry. This paper reviews the relationship between service quality and the degree of employee empowerment. The first objective of this research is to test the effects of employee empowerment on service quality, and the second one is to test how tenure affects this relationship. According to statistical analysis, meaning, competency, and autonomy generally have an affirmative impact on many service quality factors. Also the results of regression analysis to test the moderation effect show that long term employees are more sensitive to autonomy than short term employees.

  • The bacterial cellulose has many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. In order to make opaque product from this cellulose, filling properties by fillers should be known. This study was performed to investigate the effect of filler addition on physical properties of sheets from bacterial cellulose. The effect of filling on its optical properties was also discussed. The apparent density and internal bonding strength of bacterial cellulose sheet are decreasing with the increase of filler contents. Those adversely affect Young's modulus and physical property of the sheet, but these negative phenomena of the bacterial cellulose sheet by filler addition are not so sensitive compared to substantial decreasing of physical properties of ordinary hardwood KP. This strength decrease would be attributed to the decrease of relative bonding sites among pulp fibers. Concerned to optical properties, the bacterial cellulose sheet shows high increase of brightness and opacity according to filler loading, but no significant changes in porosity up to 17.3% loading because of fine and filamentous structure of bacterial cellulose fibers.

  • In-plane ESPI(Electronic Speckle Patten Interferometry)was devised to measure in~plane defamation and rotation of a specimen with laser in this study. The conventional measuring methods of surface deformations such as the strain gauge have many demerits because they are contact and point-to-point measuring ones. But that ESPI is noncontact, nondestructive and whole field measuring method can overcome previous disadvantages. We used ESPI which is sensitive to in-plane displacement for measuring in-plane deformations of a disk. First of all, the system calibration was done due to an in-plane rotation before getting deformations of a disk. Finally we showed good agreement between theexperiment results and those of the FEA(Finit Element Analysis).

  • The effect of swirl flow structures on combustion dynamics of two interacting, lean-premixed flames was experimentally investigated, with a particular emphasis on swirl numbers and swirl rotational directions. Our results show that the amplitude of limit cycle oscillations is very sensitive to the combination of swirl numbers and rotational directions, while the instability frequency remains nearly unchanged. The counter-rotating cases show significantly lower pressure perturbations, and this behavior appears to be related to the formation of compact interacting zone with higher heat release rate, indicating the presence of increased flame surface wrinkling caused by intense turbulence.

  • Hanji is a traditional Korean handmade paper, which has been known in ancient Far East as excellent quality calligraphic paper for more than 1,500 year. Hanji is mostly made of Korean paper mulberry bast fibers, and if properly processed, normally lasts for more than 1,000 years with significant strength and still recognizable calligraphic writings or drawings on it. Dochim is a special way of Hanji calendering process, but is turned out to be quite different from modern calendering (machine calendering) in several aspects. In Dochim process, mechanical impacts were applied vertically to the surface of papers. Compared to the modern calendering, Dochim increased paper gloss much more, but paper smoothness a little less. By the Dochim process, densification occurred and the degree of densification was more sensitive to the fiber type in the Dochim process than in the calendering method.

  • The ability to provide quality power has become a significant issue in power systems. The main causes of poor power quality are harmonic currents, poor power factor, supply-voltage variations, etc. A technique of achieving both active current distortion compensation, power factor correction and also mitigating the supply-voltage variation (sag or swell) at the load side is presented in this paper. The operation and rating issues of the proposed Single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner are also highlighted. To reduce the total cost while simultaneously increasing the performance, the system is fully digitally controlled using the fixed-point TMS320F240 digital signal processor. The performances of the UPQC, which is composed by shunt and series PWM controlled-converters, have been verified on a laboratory prototype.

  • Deregulation is not a matter or problem to be resolved simply by revising a law or a system in a short period of time. Rather, it should be implemented at a steady pace on the basis of a full understanding of the relationships between government regulation and the government's role, taking into account the inherent functions of the market. Moreover, arguments about government regulation and its deregulation vary according to viewpoints and approaches on the part of parties concerned. This makes it more difficult to form a consensus or reach a conclusion in recognizing and resolving the basis of problems at issue. This paper aims to review the shipping industry deregulation of major countries, to analyze Korea's situation and problems of shipping regulation, and to suggest it's improving methods. Although government regulation is a sensitive policy issue, this paper remains relatively at the basic research. Regulation problems should be tackled by interdisciplinary approach. A specific approach in regulation study could not explain exactly the causes and results of government policy
