In summer season of 1998, a huge flood occurred around the Yangtze River in the eastern China. The low salinity water less than 28 psu from the river was detected around the southeastern part of the Jeju Island which is located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. We studied how to detect low salinity water from the Yangtze River, which gives terrible damages to the Korean fisheries. We got the relationships between low surface salinity, turbid water from the Yangtze River and digital ocean color using remote sensing of SeaWiFS satellite in the northern East China Sea in summer seanson of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The charts of salinity in the northern East China Sea were made by the regenerating of the satellite ocean color data with the formula from the relationships between low salinity, in situ turbid water (transparency) and satellite ocean color.

The aim of our study is to develop new algorism for sea fog detection by using Geostational Meteorological Satellite-5(GMS-5) and suggest the techniques of its continuous detection. So as to detect daytime sea fog/stratus(00UTC, May 10, 1999), visible accumulated histogram method and surface albedo method are used. The characteristic value during daytime showed A(min) > 20% and DA < 10% when visble accumulated histogram method was applied. And the sea fog region which detected is of similarity in composite image and surface albedo method. In case of nighttime sea fog(18UTC, May 10, 1999), infrared accumulated histogram method and maximum brightness temperature method are used, respectively. Maximum brightness temperature method(T_max method) detected sea fog better than IR accumulated histogram method. In case of T_max method, when infrared value is larger than T_max, fog is detected, where T_max is an unique value, maximum infrared value in each pixel during one month. Then T_max is beneath 700hpa temperature of GDAPS(Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System). Sea fog region which detected by T_max method was similar to the result of National Oceanic and Atmosheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR) DCD(Dual Channel Difference). But inland visibility and relative humidity didn't always agreed well.

SSH(Sea Surface Height) from TOPEX/Poseidon and SST data are analyzed to estimate characteristics of annual and inter-annual variations in the East Asian seas(110E - l80E, 20N - 50N) from November 1992 to May 1998. In EOF analysis of SSH and SST, 57% and 97% of the variance are represented by the first two modes. The first mode of SSH and SST shows strong annual variations expected for steric changes. The second mode of SSH shows a long-term variation, but that of SST shows 3 - 4month offset from annual variation. In the EOF analysis of the SSH and SST, 61% and 54% of the total variance are represented by the first three modes. The first mode represented a long-term variation, and the third mode reflected the bi-ennial variation. The first three mode were not strongly correlated with ENSO. We further apply Canonical Correlation Analysis(CCA) to find the dominant correlation patterns with ENSO.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) is a United States-Japan project for rain measurement from space. The first spaceborne Precipitation Radar(PR) has been installed aboard the TRMM satellite. The ground based validation of the TRMM satellite observations was conducted by TRMM science team through a Global Validation Program(GVP) consisted of 10 or more ground validation sites throughout the tropics. However, TRMM radar should always be validated and assessed against reference data to be used in Korean Peninsula because the rainrates measured with satellite varies by time and space. We have analyzed errors in the comparison of rainrates measured with the TRMM/PR and the ground-based instrument i.e. Automatic Weather System(AWS) by means of statistical methods. Preliminary results show that the near surface rainrate of TRMM/PR are highly correlated with ground measurements especially for the very deep convective rain clouds, though the correlation is changed according to the type and amount of precipitating clouds. Results also show that TRMM/PR instrument is inclined to underestimate the rainrate on the whole over Korea than the AWS measurement for the cases of heavy rainfall.
Soil moisture, through its dominance in the exchange of energy and moisture between the land and atmosphere, plays a crucial role in influencing atmospheric circulation. To identify the crucial role, it is a common agreement that knowledge of land surface processes and development of remote sensing techniques are of great important scientific issues. This research uses TRMM satellite C band (10.65 GHz) data to retrieve soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau in Mainland China. Two retrieval schemes that are implemented include the t-(J) model and the R model. The latter one is developed based on a land surface process and radiobrightness (R) model for bare soil and vegetated terrain. Compared with the in situ ground measurements, the soil moisture retrieved from the R model and the t-(J) model with vegetation information obviously appear more accurate than that derived from bare soil model. Retrieved soil moisture contents from the two inversion models, R model and t-(J) model, have a similar trend, but the former appears to be superior in terms of correlation coefficient and bias compared with in situ data. In the future, we will apply the R model with the TRMM 10.65 GHz brightness temperature to monitor long-term soil moisture variation over Tibet Plateau.
The only practical way to measure wind resource at high-altitude over 100 m above ground for a feasibility study on a high-rise building integrated wind turbine might be ground-based remote sensing. The remote-sensing campaign was performed at a 145 m-building roof in Jamsil where is a center of metropolitan city Seoul. The campaign aimed uncertainty assessment of Leosphere WindCube LIDAR and Scintec MPAS SODAR through a mutual comparison. Compared with LIDAR, the data availability of SODAR was about 2/3 at 550 m altitude while both showed over 90% under 400 m, and it is shown that the data availability decrease may bring a distortion of statistical analysis. The wind speed measurement of SODAR was fitted to a slope of 0.92 and $R^2$ of 0.90 to the LIDAR measurement. The relative standard deviation of wind speed difference and standard deviation of wind direction difference were evaluated to be 30% and 20 degrees, respectively over the whole measurement heights.
The susceptibility of landslides and the effect of landslide-related factors at Penang in Malaysia using the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data have been evaluated. Landslide locations were identified in the study area from interpretation of aerial photographs and from field surveys. Topographical and geological data and satellite images were collected, processed, and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and image processing. The factors chosen that influence landslide occurrence were: topographic slope, topographic aspect, topographic curvature and distance from drainage, all from the topographic database; lithology and distance from lineament, taken from the geologic database; land use from Landsat TM (Thermatic Mapper) satellite images; and the vegetation index value from SPOT HRV (High Resolution Visible) satellite images. Landslide hazardous areas were analysed and mapped using the landslide-occurrence factors employing the probability-frequency ratio method. To assess the effect of these factors, each factor was excluded from the analysis, and its effect verified using the landslide location data. As a result, land 'cover had relatively positive effects, and lithology had relatively negative effects on the landslide susceptibility maps in the study area. In addition, the landslide susceptibility maps using the all factors showed the relatively good results.

Diffuse pollution has been considering as a major source of the quality deterioration of water resources. The establishment of riparian vegetation strips of buffers along those areas of water bodies is used to reduce the threat of diffuse pollution. Remote sensing offers a means by which critical areas could be identified, so that subsequent action toward the establishment of riparian zones can be taken. Even though the principal purpose of this research comes from the feasibility of the imagery of KOMPSAT-2 satellite, Landsat TM satellite data, which has 7 bands, are used to characterize the land cover for the study area on the behalf of KOMPSAT-2. This investigation focuses on the assessment of the existing riparian buffer zones for a portion of the upper Geum river watershed from the viewpoint of pollution mitigation by riparian vegetation strip establishment. Through comparing the delineation of riparian buffer zones developed with the existing zones established by the government, we can find the critical distortion points of the existing riparian buffer zone.
