  • The application of compressive sensing (CS) to a radar imaging system based on a frequency-scanned microstrip leaky wave antenna is investigated. First, an analytical model of the system matrix is formulated as the basis for the inversion algorithm. Then, $L_1-norm$ minimization is applied to the inverse problem to generate a range-azimuth image of the scene. Because of the antenna length, the near-field effect is considered in the CS formulation to properly image close-in targets. The resolving capability of the combined frequency-scanned antenna and CS processing is examined and compared to results based on the short-time Fourier transform and the pseudo-inverse. Both simulation and measurement data are tested to show the system performance in terms of image resolution.

  • Since 1998 for protection of marine pollution, all ships must have oil filtering equipment and 15ppm bilge alarms which satisfy Requirements of MARPOL 73/78. Oily-water separator used in machinery area of ships usually consists of two parts; one is filtering equipment and the other is oil content meter(OCM). This study presents optical characteristics of bilge were acquired form oil content sensing module. The oil content sensing module consists of IR-LED light source, photo-diode light receivers, and a glass tube for bilge water sample. The experiment with the bilge water demonstrates various valuable optical properties. These optical properties suggest notes and guides to make the low-cost, easy operation and good performance commercial type OCM that satisfy the requirements of MARPOL 73/78.

  • Lane departure avoidance system is one of the key technologies for the future active-safety passenger cars. The lane departure avoidance system is composed of two subsystems; lane sensing algorithm and active-steering controller. In this paper, the road image is obtained by vision sensor and the lane parameters are estimated using image processing and Kalman Filter technique. The active-steering controller is designed to prevent the lane departure. The developed active-steering controller can be realized by steer-by-wire actuator. The lane-sensing algorithm and active-steering controller are implemented into the steering HILS(Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) and their performance is evaluated with a human driver in the loop.

  • We developed a part of stroke sensing cylinder and its measurement system for system for automatic excavator. In this paper, for development of stroke sensing sylinder, we consist of 2-axis control instrument system with magnetic sensor. A Performence of cylinder rod with magnetic scales is evaluated by its system. Furthmore, the position control for good performance of instrument system is achieved by a sliding mode control which is a new method diminishing the chattering in that control by setting 2-dead band along the swtching line. The unknown parameters for sliding mode control are estimated by the signal compression method.

  • [1] There are systematical errors associated with ionospheric influence in retrieving key atmospheric parameters from radio occultation (RO) soundings. In order to obtain better-quality retrievals, we develop a new method, hereafter called National Central University Radio Occultation (NCURO) scheme, to reduce the ionospheric influence. The excess phase is divided into two parts, namely geometric excess length and path excess length (excess length along ray path due to refractivity effect). An excess phase equation is presented and implemented in the NCURO scheme Whose performance is evaluated through comparisons with model simulation and experimental data. The model simulation is based on the use of the ionospheric model 002001 and atmospheric model NRLMSISE-OO. Results show that the NCURO scheme significantly reduces the ionospheric influence at altitudes above 70 km as does the scheme presented in the literature, and provides better corrections for the atmospheric profile. • Refocusing methods are used to compensate optical performance degradation of high resolution satellite camera during on-orbit operation. Due to mechanical vibration during launch and thermal vacuum environment of space where camera is exposed, the alignment of optical system may have error. The focusing error is dominant of misalignment and caused by the de-space error of secondary mirror of catoptric camera, which is most sensitive to vibration and space environment. The high resolution camera of SPOT, Pleiades and KOMPSAT2 have refocusing device to adjust focusing during orbital operation while QuickBird of US does not use on orbit refocusing method. For the Korsch type optical configuration which is preferred for large aperture space remote sensing camera, secondary mirror and folding mirror are available as refocusing element.

  • This paper presents the development of the surface profile sensing system (SPSS) and its application to analysis of road surface. The SPSS which can robustly reconstruct the road input profiles from the intermixed data with the vehicle's dynamic motion, is implemented using the multi-sensor system with the optimally shaped transfer function. The performance of this system is evaluated by a series of experimental works in the devised simulator. And a real car test equipped with the proposed system is performed in the proving ground over both deterministic and random road surfaces. Finally, a feasibility of the system is investigated considering the road model.

  • Biological sensory systems continuously monitor and analyze changes in real-world environments that are relevant to an animal's specific behavioral needs and goals. Understanding the sensory mechanisms and information processing principles that biological systems utilize for efficient sensory data acquisition may provide useful guidance for the design of smart-sensing systems in engineering applications. Weakly electric fish, which use self-generated electrical energy to actively sense their environment, provide an excellent model system for studying biological principles of sensory data acquisition. The electrosensory system enables these fish to hunt and navigate at night without the use of visual cues. To achieve reliable, real-time task performance, the electrosensory system implements a number of smart sensing strategies, including efficient stimulus encoding, multi-scale virtual sensor arrays, task-dependent filtering and online subtraction of sensory expectation.

  • The objectives of the thesis are to propose a pattern classification method for remote sensing data using artificial neural network. First, we apply the error back propagation algorithm to classify the remote sensing data. In this case, the classification performance depends on a training data set. Using the training data set and the error back propagation algorithm, a layered neural network is trained such that the training pattern are classified with a specified accuracy. After training the neural network, some pixels are deleted from the original training data set if they are incorrectly classified and a new training data set is built up. Once training is complete, a testing data set is classified by using the trained neural network. The classification results of Landsat TM data show that this approach produces excellent results which are more realistic and noiseless compared with a conventional Bayesian method.

  • A new planar-type micro gas sensor was designed and fabricated on silicon substrate and the operating characteristics of the sensor were investigated. The thin sensitive film of the sensor was fabricated by spin-coating of the SnO$_2$ sol solution which was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The spin-coating method for preparation of sensing layer was adopted to improve the long-term stability of the fabricated sensing film instead of physical methods such as rf sputtering and thermal evaporation. The fabricated microsensor showed a fairly good sensing performance for CO gas in air at 250$^{\circ}C$ The sensitivity(S=Ra/Rg) was shown to be about 5 to 2000ppm CO with heating power of 50mW.
