  • Numerical prediction of nocturnal thermal high in summer of the 1995 near Taegu city located in a basin has been carried out by a non-hydrostatic numerical model over complex terrain through one-way double nesting technique in the Z following coordinate system. Under the prevailing westerly winds, vertical turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat over mountains for daytime hours are quite strong with a large magnitude of more than $120W/\textrm{m}^2$, but a small one of $5W/\textrm{m}^2$ at the surface of the basin. Convective boundary layer (CBL) is developed with a thickness of about 600m over the ground in the lee side of Mt. Hyungje, and extends to the edge of inland at the interface of land sea in the east. Sensible heat flux near the surface of the top of the mountain is $50W/\textrm{m}^2$, but its flux in the basin is almost zero. Convergence of sensible heat flux occurs from the ground surface toward the atmosphere in the lower layer, causing the layer over the mountain to be warmed up, but no convergance of the flux over the basin results from the significant mixing of air within the CBL. As horizontal transport of sensible heat flux from the top of the mountain toward over the basin results in the continuous accumulation of heat with time, enhancing air temperature at the surface of the basin, especially Taegu city to be higher than $39.3^{\circ}C$. Since latent heat fluxes are $270W/\textrm{m}^2$ near the top of the mountain and $300W/\textrm{m}^2$ along the slope of the mountain and the basin, evaporation of water vapor from the surface of the basin is much higher than one from the mountain and then, horizontal transport of latent heat flux is from the basin toward the mountain, showing relative humidity of 65 to 75% over the mountain to be much greater than 50% to 55% in the basin. At night, sensible heat fluxes have negative values of $-120W/\textrm{m}^2$ along the slope near the top of the mountain and $-50W/\textrm{m}^2$ at the surface of the basin, which indicate gain of heat from the lower atmosphere. Nighttime radiative cooling produces a shallow nocturnal surface inversion layer with a thickness of about 100m, which is much lower than common surface inversion layer, and lifts extremely heated air masses for daytime hours, namely, a warm pool of $34^{\circ}C$ to be isolated over the ground surface in the basin. As heat transfer from the warm pool in the lower atmosphere toward the ground of the basin occurs, the air near the surface of the basin does not much cool down, resulting in the persistence of high temperature at night, called nocturnal thermal high or tropical night. High relative humidity of 75% is found at the surface of the basin under the moderate wind, while slightly low relative humidity of 60% is along the eastern slope of the high mountain, due to adiabatic heating by the srong downslope wind. Air temperature near the surface of the basin with high moisture in the evening does not get lower than that during the day and the high temperature produces nocturnal warming situation.

  • Heat transfer phenomena during inward melting and solidification process of the phase change material were studied expertimentally. The phase change medium was 99% pure n-docosane paraffin ($C_{22}H_{46}$). The solid-liquid interface motion during phase change was recorded photographically. Measurements were made on the temperature, the solid-liquid interface, the melted or frozen mass and the various energy components stored or extracted from the cylinder wall. For melting, the experimental results reaffirmed the dominant role played by the conduction at an early stage, by the natural convection at longer time. For solidification, natural convection effects in the superheated liquid were modest and were confined to short freezing time. Although the latent energy is the largest contributor to the total stored or extracted energy, the aggregate sensible energies can make a significant contribution, especially at large cylinder wall superheating or subcooling, large initial phase change material subcooling or superheating.

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the characteristics of heat and mass transfer around an evaporative condenser. Numerical calculations have been performed using multi-zone method to investigate heat transfer rate and evaporation rate with the variation of inlet condition(velocity, relative humidity and temperature) of the moist air, the flow rate of the cooling water and the shape of the condenser tube. From the results it is found that the profile of heat flux is the same as that of evaporation rate since heat transfer along the gas-liquid interface is dominated by the transport of latent heat in association with the vaporization(evaporation) of the liquid film. The evaporation rate and heat transfer rate is increased as mass flow rate increases or relative humidity and temperature decrease respectively. But the flow rate of the cooling water hardly affect the evaporation rate and heat flux along the gas-liquid interface. The elliptic tube which the ratio of semi-minor axis to semi-major axis is 0.8 is more effective than the circular tube because the pressure drop is decreased. But the evaporation rate and heat flux shown independency on the tube shape.

  • This study investigates the simultanceous heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow at the interface. The application of this work is the optimization of falling film evaporators for use in potential hybrid air conditioning systems. The specific geometry considered is liquid TEG films falling along the vertical cooled surfaces of a channel with air in cross flow. The equations to describe the coupled heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow for a falling film evaporator have been presented and solved numerically. The effects of important design and operating variables on the evaporator performance predicted by the parametric numerical analysis and suggestions for performance improvements of the evaporator are presented.

  • Remote Sensing data with ancillary ground-based meteorological data provides the capalility of computing threeof the four surface energy balance components(i.e. net radiation, soil heat flux and sensible heat flux) at different spatial and temporal scales. As a result, this enablis the estimation of the remaining term, latent heat flux. One of the practical applications with this approach is to produce evapotranspiration maps over large areas. This results could estimate and reproduce areal evapotranspiration over large area as much as several hundred sequare kilometers. Moreover, some calculating simulations for the effects of the land use change on the surface heat flux has been made by this method, which is able to estimate evapotranspiration under arbitracy presumed condition. From the simulation of land use change, the results suggests that the land use change in study area can be produce the significant changes in surface heat flux. This preliminary research suggests that the future research should involve development of methods to account for the variability of meteorological parameters brought about by changes in surface conditions and improvements in the modeling of sensible heat transfer across the surface atmosphere interface for partical canopy conditions using remote sensing information.

  • Undoubtedly, the employment of direct bond interaction between steel and concrete is preceding the other mechanisms because of its ease of construction. However, the large scatter in the experimental data about the issue has hindered the efforts to characterize bond strength. In the following research, the direct bond interaction and bond-slip behavior of CFTs with circular cross-section were examined through repeated load-reversed push-out tests until four cycles of loading. The influence of different parameters including the diameter of the tube and the use of shear tabs were assessed. Moreover, the utilization of expansive concrete and external spirals was proposed and tested as ways of improving bond strength. According to the results section dimensions, tube slenderness, shrinkage potential of concrete, interface roughness and confinement are key factors in a natural bond. Larger diameters will lead to a considerable drop in bond strength. The use of shear tabs by their associated bending moments increases the bond stress up to eight times. Furthermore, employment of external spirals and expansive concrete have a sensible effect on enhancing bonds. Macro-locking was also found to be the main component in achieving bond strength.

  • As is commonly said, music is 'language of emotions.' It is because sound is a plentiful modality to communicate the human sensibility information. However, most researches of auditory displays were focused on improving efficiency on user's performance data such as performance time and accuracy. Recently, many of researchers in auditory displays acknowledge that individual preference and sensible satisfaction may be a more important factor than the performance data. On this ground, in the present study we constructed the sound sensibility dimensions ('Pleasure', 'Complexity', and 'Activity') and systematically examined the attributes of sound on the sensibility dimensions and analyzed the meanings. As a result, sound sensibility dimensions depended on each sound attributes , and some sound attributes interact with one another. Consequently, the results of the present study will provide the useful possibilities of applying the affective influence in the field of auditory displays needing the applications of the sensibility information according to the sound attributes.

  • A thermal storage systems was designed to correspond to the temporal or quantitative variation in the thermal energy demand, and most of its heat is stored using the latent and sensible heat of the heat storage material. The heat storage method using latent heat has a very complex phenomenon for heat transfer and thermal behavior because it is accompanied by a phase change in the course of heating/cooling of the heat storage material. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to produce an experimentally accessible as well as numerical approach to confirm the heat transfer and thermal behavior of phase change materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems encountered during the actual heat transfer from an internal storage tank through simulation of the process of storing and utilizing thermal energy from the thermal storage tank containing charged PCM. This study used analysis methods to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM with simultaneous heating/cooling conditions in the rectangular space simulating the thermal storage tank. A numerical analysis was carried out in a state considering natural convection using the ANSYS FLUENT(R) program. The result indicates that the slope of the liquid-solid interface in the analysis field changed according to the temperature difference between the heating surface and cooling surface.
