  • Although sensory deficits caused by stroke have been occasionally reported, dysfunctions of discriminative sensation have seldom been studied in patients with strokes. With the use of specifically designed methods, discriminative sensations including texture discrimination and position sense were tested in 67 patients with acute unilateral stroke. Thirty-two age and sex-matched healthy subjects were used as controls. Impaired discriminative sensation was common in patients with unilateral stroke (detected in 57 out of the 67 patients) regardless of the lesion location except for patients with lateral medullary stroke. Proprioceptive discriminative sensation remained intact in all except for three out of 25 patients who were initially diagnosed as having pure motor stroke on the bases of conventional sensory tests. However, tactile discriminative sensation remained intact in only 17 out of 25 patients. Discriminative sensory disturbances are common in patients with unilateral stroke even in those with intact sensory function on routine examination. The subtle disturbances of this sensation may explain, at least in part, the clumsiness of the patients that is not readily explained by conventional neurological tests.

  • This study aims to find frequency weighting curves for the evaluation of drivers' discomfort by vertical and rotational steering wheel vibration. Equal sensation curves, inverse of frequency weighting curves, were determined for the two kinds of vibrations respectively by using the sinusoidal signals with reference amplitudes from 0.2 to 0.4 m/s2 in the frequency range from 5 to 100 ㎐. Twelve subjects joined at the tests, and median values of the twelve judgments were used to determine the equal sensation curves. An experiment was followed to compare the relative sensation magnitude between the two kinds of equal sensation curves, which showed discomfort by the rotational vibration was 1.5 times of that by the vertical vibration at 50 ㎐.

  • This study empirically compares the influence of sex-appeal fashion Point-of-Purchase (POP) types on attitude towards advertising. It also highlights the moderating roles of gender and the level of sensation seeking. Three sex-appeal fashion POP types (nude/semi-nude/body conscious) were developed for this study and the interaction effect of the types of sex-appeal fashion POP advertising and gender was tested. In addition, interaction effect of the types of sex-appeal fashion POP advertising and the level of sensation seeking (high/low) was tested. The results found that gender influenced consumer attitudes toward sex-appeal fashion POP advertising type. Male consumers showed a more favorable attitude toward advertising for the nude type than others; however, female consumers showed a more favorable attitude toward advertising for semi-nude and body conscious type than the nude type. The results also found a significant two-way interaction effect of sexual POP advertising types and sensation seeking on attitude toward POP advertising. High sensation seekers preferred nude and semi-nude type POP advertising to body conscious POP advertising. It is useful to investigate how various marketing factors support attitude toward POP advertising in the context of sexual fashion POP advertising and which factors exert the strongest influence within different degrees of nudity.

  • This study was conducted to compare the hunting reaction of finger in the cold water. Finger skin temperature is measured the left middle finger tip immersion in cold water of 5℃ for 30 minutes and measurements were made on finger skin temperature(Ts), thermal comfort, and cold pain sensations during the experiment at the spring (March) and Winter(December). Results were follows. Is before immersion was at the highest in spring and at the lowest in winter and was closely related to the indoor temperature Ts during immersion and recovery. Mean of finger skin temperature(MST), the skin temperature at the first rise(TTR) and amplitude of finger skin temperature reaction during immersion(AT) were significant higher in spring than that in winter(P<.01). The lowest skin temperature(LST) during the cold water immersion were significantly higher in spring than that in winter (P<.05). The frequency of the appearance of cold-Induced vase dilation(CIVD) was higher in spring than that in winter. However, time for the first temperature(TTR) and recovery time(RT) had no seasonal variation. In addition, cold pains during immersion were felt more strongly in spring than in winter. Local thermal sensation, finger thermal sensation in dynamic state during hand immersion was different from that in the Winter. Spring was slowly cold in cold water immersion.

  • Physiological responses and subjective sensations were evaluated for wearing protective welding clothing in consideration of the work environment for the shipbuilding industry. Experimental clothing was made of oxidant carbon nonwoven fabric (SW2) and oxidant carbon/p-aramid blended fabric (SW4). The values of all items in physiological responses were higher upon wearing oxidant carbon experimental clothing versus wearing oxidant carbon/p-aramid experimental clothing (p<.001). The results of the wearing evaluation in the welding work on-site showed that existing leather protective clothing had a very low satisfaction of permeability, weight sensation and wearing sensation. For the wearing sensation of experimental clothing with SW2, permeability and durability were poor and the pressure and weight sensation satisfaction was very high. In case of SW4, the satisfaction was very high in functional movement, pressure, weight sensation and management aspects; subsequently, the overall wearing satisfaction was very good.

  • This study is the first part of the research to reveal the effects of somatotype characteristics on body temperature control reaction as well as thermal sensation. Nine healthy female collegians (classified into 3 body types of thin, normal, and obese according to Rohrer index) living in Busan were chosen as the subjects. The following are the results: Significant differences of skin temperature appeared in the parts of epigastrium (thin/normal>obese), anterior forearm (normal>thin/obese), and anterior leg (obese > thin/normal) as well as mean skin temperature. Mean skin temperature temporarily dropped owing to the exercise but tended to recover as time went by. Skin temperature of normal/thin shows higher than obese type. The change of skin temperature was noticed in the order of forehead > epigastrium > anterior forearm > anterior leg > anterior thigh (obese type) ; epigastrium > forehead > anterior forearm > anterior thigh > anterior leg (normal type) ; epigastrium > forehead > anterior forearm > anterior thigh > anterior leg (thin type, before and after exercise); epigastrium > forehead > anterior forearm > anterior leg > anterior thigh (thin type, during exercise). Significant differences were shown in the temperature change inside clothes according to somatotypes. No significant differences were revealed in thermal sensation, moisture sensation, and comfortable sensation according to body types and time.

  • Among many auditory feelings for the vehicle interior noise, booming is considered as the most important nuisance to the passenger and developer. Because the main source of booming noise is a power train system including engine, in general, it consists of tonal components related to fundamental engine rotation and its harmonics including the firing frequency. Therefore, it is demanded to extract the effective tonal components only by using pitch extraction algorithm based on the place theory enable to find aurally relevant tonal components. However, there is a difference between booming sensation and pitch perception according to frequency change of tonal component. In this study, subjective listening test using a tracking method was performed to find the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency. 20 Koreans and 10 Japanese were participated in this test and the results obtained from Koreans and Japanese were compared with each other. Finally, 5Hz was determined as the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency, and by applying this value to booming analysis using pitch concept, it was confirmed that the degree of prediction of booming sensation was improved.

  • The influences of luminous environment on visual responses and fatigue sensation in art galleries were examined in this study. Field measurements and survey were performed in three galleries under various illuminance and luminous conditions. Result implies that vertical illuminance on art paintings needed to be somewhere between 200 lx and 300 lx to avoid visual discomfort. The vertical illuminance difference between consecutive paintings should not exceed 100 lx to keep visually comfortable environment. Visual comfort sensations were related to glare, visual stimulus, reflection from paintings, illuminance variation, and the sensation that subjects can clearly see the paintings. The sensation of fatigue was significantly influenced by the changes of luminous element that caused visual stimulus and discomfort. The sensation of eye fatigue among physical fatigue was primarily influenced by the glare, visual stimulus and comfort. The psychological fatigue was also influenced by eye fatigue, visual comfort, brightness and satisfaction with color of light.
