The main purposes of this study were to investigate the content of health behaviors and to examine factors influencing the health behaviors of the elderly. Data regarding the health behavior of 126 people over 65 years of age living in community settings were used. All subjects were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic variables, health behaviors, present chronic disease, subjective health status, a scale for worthy life, a scale for self-esteem, and a scale for loneliness. Health behaviors included 27questions on diet, exercise, stress-coping, smoking, drinking, a regular medical check-up, social activities, etc. The data analysis procedure included stepwise regression using health behavior as the dependent variable, and sociodemographics, illness, and psychosocial variables as independent variables. Stepwise regression revealed that factors such as feelings of worthy life($\beta$=-0.350, p<0.0001), communicating with otjers or the lack there of ($\beta$=0.183, p<0.05), and self-esteem($\beta$=0.196, p<0.05) were independently and significantly associated with health behaviors. For example, individuals who showed higher levels of worthy life and who had confiding relationships with others tended to practice more health behaviors. Subjects who had a higher level of self-esteem showed the same tendency. These results suggest the necessity of a intervention that considers psychosocial aspects should be included in care of the elderly so as to promote positive health behavior.
This study was performed to investigate the frequency of dairy beverage consumption and factors which affect the dairy beverage consumption of women. The subjects were 1,012 females living in Seoul. They preferred milk, yakult. flavored milk, liquid yogurt, semi-solid yogurt, and low fat milk in order of frequency. The consumption of the dairy beverage was not related to season. The respondents knew that the dairy beverages were nutritious and good for their health. More than fifty percent of them answered that dairy beverages tasted good. The consumption of milk and yakult were related with their occupation, habitual aspect, and practical factors. The consumption of liquid yogurt was affected by their family income, habitual aspect, practical factors and familarity with that beverage. The consumption of semi-solid yogurt was affected by their family income, health status, habitual aspect, and practical factors. The consumption of most beverages were affected by the recognition of those beverages rather than by socio-demographic factors. In order to enough drink dairy beverage, nutritional education messages should encourage consumption of dairy beverages. Policies that make students access dairy beverages at school should be promoted.
There are among the most relevant toxic emissions from incinerators such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Induction of cytochrome P4501A1 catalyzed 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase(EROD) activity in mammalian cell culture(EROD bioassay) is thought to be a selective and sensitive parameter used for the quantification of dioxin-like components. In this study, the toxic emissions from several school waste incinerators were evaluated by determination of CYPIA catalytic activity and cytotoxicity using cell culture microbioassay. The incinerator residue and soil samples were collected from the schools located in Kyunggi province from April to June 1999. The samples were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus using toluene for 20 hours. In order to clean-up, concentrated crude extracts were applied to basic alumina column. The EROD activities of extracts in the H4IIE cells were from 1.91$\pm$0.32 ng-TEQ/g to 24.54$\pm$3.48 ng-TEQ/g of biochemical-TEQ value. In soil samples, CYP1A catalytic activity was 0.09~0.64 ng-TEQ/g. EROD bioassay, seems to be a useful short-term bioassay when information about the biological response of complex environmental samples is needed. Although further study is needed, these results indicate that the potent toxic emissions are produced from school waste semi-incinerators.
The purpose of this study is to obtain the effects on clothing weight in the health state of the kindergartners. So 1 divided 140 kindergartners into 3 groups. A not trained of light wearing in the control group, B the semi-experimetnal group, C the experimental group. In the field surveys conducted their monthly clothing weight and anthropometric measurements, physique index (obesity index) and motor-ability and rate of cold contraction and of absence, Cornell Medical index from Jun, 1986 to Feb, 1987 in Seoul. 1) The experimental group was even less clothing than the control group in clothing weight during the training period. 2) All the experimental group droped conspicuosly the rate of cold contraction and absence during this period. 3) After this training, the experimental group was better than semi-experimental group and control group in motor-ability especially in standing broad jump, flexibility and tennis ball throw, 25 meter dash. 4) But, 1 could not find the different of anthropometric-measurements, physique-index about this train.
Compared to a batch reactor, where all reactants are initially charged to the reactor, the semi-batch reactor presents serious advantages. The feed of at least one of the reactants provides an additional way of controlling the reaction course, which represents a safety factor and increases the constancy of the product quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of thermal hazard such as a feed time, catalysis concentration and solvent concentration in methylthioisocyanate(MTI) synthesis reaction process. The experiments were carried out by the Multimax reactor system and Accelerating rate calorimeter(ARC). The MTI synthesis reaction process has many reaction factors and complicated reaction mechanism of multiphase reaction. Through this study, we can use as a tool for assessment of thermal hazard of other reaction processes by applying experiment method provided.
Objective: This study was carried out in order to estimate atmospheric Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) concentrations using pine needles as a passive air sampler (PAS) in urban, semi-rural and rural regions. Methods: One-year old pine needles were collected to analyze their PCBs concentrations ($C_p$, pg/g dry) at the end of December. PCBs concentrations in ambient air ($C_a$, $pg/m^3$) were calculated with the $logK_{oa}-log(C_p/C_a)$) model. Results: PCBs concentrations in ambient air ($C_a$) were high in the order of urban, semi-rural and rural regions. The lower-chlorinated PCBs showed a higher concentration in ambient air. However, the distribution of PCBs congeners was similar in all three regions. Correlation between $C_a$ and the population density of the three regions was significant ($R^2$=0.9834, p<0.001). Conclusions: It was concluded that although the production and use of PCBs was banned in the1970s, PCBs are currently being produced unintentionally by human activities.
Extracts from bay leaves, Chongbaek (Allium fistulosum L.), Hutgae (Hovenia dulcis Thunb.) fruit, and green tea, using Soju (Korean alcohol, $30^{\circ}$) as a solvent were analyzed for their antioxidative properties. The eels were evenly coated with the extract concentration equivalent to 2% of their total weight and dried for 15 hours at $35^{\circ}C$ using an air blower. The DPPH radical scavenging effect, acid value and peroxide value of semi-dried eel, and linoleic acid peroxidation of eel oil were investigated. The highest level of DPPH radical scavenging was found in green tea extracts, followed by Hutgae fruit extract and bay leaves extract (p<0.05). The acid value and peroxide value of Hutgae fruit extracts coated eels refrigerated for 21 days were the lowest followed by the green tea extract coated eels. During the 20 days reaction period, all four kinds of extracts analyzed were found to effectively decrease linoleic acid peroxidation. Among them, Hutgae fruit and green tea extracts decreased the peroxide content of eel oil steadily and for a longer period when compared to other extracts. In conclusion, pre-application of Hutgae fruit and green tea extracts on eels before drying was found to be effective in delaying peroxidation in eels during the drying process and refrigeration.
Most of X-ray generator had used rectifier type transformer with high tension generator which is supplied in a clinical diagnosis. Because the ripple rate of tube voltage is high, X-ray generating efficiency is very low. In these days, high tension generator for inverter type X-ray generator is being supplied from a broad which uses semi-conductor switching element for the electric power that have a high speed switching ability to solve these problem. But, semi-conductor element with large capacity is used with X-ray tube's large consumption power and diffusion is difficult in the small size hospital because production cost is going up by doing digital control through DSP. Therefore, this paper designed and manufactured CR type voltage divider for feedback control of tube voltage with high frequency resonance type inverter and for high tension transformer with high frequency. It was to make economical diffusion type X-ray generator which has wide output voltage and load extent. It was preyed that the X-ray generator had the stability of X-ray tube's output characteristics.
Glycosyltransferase (GT)-specific degenerate PCR screening followed by in silico sequence analyses of the target clone was used to isolate a member of family1 GT-encoding genes from the established fosmid libraries of soil actinomycetes Micromonospora echinospora ATCC 27932. A recombinant MeUGT1 was heterologously expressed as a His-tagged protein in E. coli, and its enzymatic reaction with semi-synthetic phenoxodiol isoflavene (as a glycosyl acceptor) and uridine diphosphate-glucose (as a glycosyl donor) created two different glycol-attached products, thus revealing that MeUGT1 functions as an isoflavonoid glycosyltransferase with regional flexibility. Chromatographic separation of product glycosides followed by the instrumental analyses, clearly confirmed these previously unprecedented glycosides as phenoxodiol-4'-α-O-glucoside and phenoxodiol-7-α-O-glucoside, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the above glycosides are almost the same as that of parental phenoxodiol, whereas their anti-proliferative activities are all superior to that of cisplatin (the most common platinum chemotherapy drug) against two human carcinoma cells, ovarian SKOV-3 and prostate DU-145. In addition, they are more water-soluble than their parental aglycone, as well as remaining intractable to the simulated in vitro digestion test, hence demonstrating the pharmacological potential for the enhanced bio-accessibility of phenoxodiol glycosides. This is the first report on the microbial enzymatic biosynthesis of phenoxodiol glucosides.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore practice-based evidence for health promotion in vulnerable populations with hypertension in primary health care settings. Methods: Two methodological procedures were adopted for this triangulation study. In the first phase, the sample was obtained from the computerized clinical data repository of a community nursing center. A total of 286 clients were assessed for hypertension as an actual circulation problem as coded in the Omaha System. In the second phase, a qualitative focus group was surveyed through semi-structured interviews conducted by nine advanced practice nurses who had been serving the hypertensive patients. Results: The community nurses provided essential primary healthcare services including health teaching guidance and counseling, and surveillance to vulnerable populations living in medically underserved community. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge and behavior (r=.53, p<.01), between knowledge and health status (r=.40, p<.05), and between behavior and health status (r=.48, p<.01). Conclusion: This triangulation study encompassed not only quantitative findings from the computerized records of clients but also other information acquired from advanced practice nurses. This study contributes to understanding the importance of health promotion nursing interventions even with populations already diagnosed with chronic diseases such as hypertension.
