  • To analyze the buffet phenomenon that causes serious vibration loads on a satellite launch vehicle, the pressure fluctuations on a hammerhead launch vehicle at transonic speeds are predicted by coupling CFD analysis and semi-empirical methods. From the RANS simulation, shock oscillation region, separation region, and separation reattachment region are identified, and the boundary layer thickness, the displacement thickness, and flow properties at boundary layer edge are calculated. The pressure fluctuations and power spectra on the hammerhead fairing are predicted by coupling RANS results and semi-empirical methods considering spatial distribution, and compared with the experimental data.

  • One of the most important issues in tunneling, is the squeezing phenomenon. Squeezing can occur during excavation or after the construction of tunnels, which in both cases could lead to significant damages. Therefore, it is important to predict the squeezing and consider it in the early design stage of tunnel construction. Different empirical, semi-empirical and theoretical-analytical methods have been presented to determine the squeezing. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the ability of each of these methods and identify the best method among them. In this study, squeezing in a part of the Alborz service tunnel in Iran was estimated through a number of empirical, semi- empirical and theoretical-analytical methods. Among these methods, the most robust model was used to obtain a database including 300 data for training and 33 data for testing in order to develop a machine learning (ML) method. To this end, three ML models of Gaussian process regression (GPR), artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) were trained and tested to propose a robust model to predict the squeezing phenomenon. A comparative analysis between the conventional and the ML methods utilized in this study showed that, the GPR model is the most robust model in the prediction of squeezing phenomenon. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters using the mutual information test (MIT) method showed that, the most sensitive parameter on the squeezing phenomenon is the tangential strain (ε_θ^α) parameter with a sensitivity score of 2.18. Finally, the GPR model was recommended to predict the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects. This work's significance is that it can provide a good estimation of the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects, based on which geotechnical engineers can take the necessary actions to deal with it in the pre-construction designs.

  • Attempts were made to analyze the behavior of single and multiple-bolted connections through theoretical methods such as European yield theory, empirical approaching method, and semi-rigid theory instead of many experimental methods that have been actually inefficient and non-economical. In the case of a single-bolted connection, if accurate characteristic values of a material could be guaranteed, it would be more convenient and economical to perform the behavior analysis using a model based on the semi-rigid theory, instead of the existing complex yield model, or the empirical formula which produces errors, giving different results from the actual ones. If the variables of equation determining the load and deformation could be appropriately controlled, the analytical method in conjunction with a semi-rigid theory could be effectively applied to obtain the desirably predicted value, considering that the appropriate solution could be derived through a simpler equation using a less difficult method compared to the existing yield model. It is concluded that analytical method with semi-rigid theory can be used in the behavior analysis of bolted connection because our developed method showed excellent analysis ability of behavior until number of bolt is two. Although our analytical method has the disadvantage that the number of bolt is limited to two, it is concluded that it has the advantage than numerical method which complicated and time-consuming.

  • Prediction of physicochemical properties of organic molecules is an important process in chemistry and chemical engineering. The MSEP approach developed in our lab calculates the molecular surface electrostatic potential (ESP) on van der Waals (vdW) surfaces of molecules. This approach includes geometry optimization and frequency calculation using hybrid density functional theory, B3LYP, at the 6-31G(d) basis set to find minima on the potential energy surface, and is known to give satisfactory QSPR results for various properties of organic molecules. However, this MSEP method is not applicable to screen large database because geometry optimization and frequency calculation require considerable computing time. To develop a fast but yet reliable approach, we have re-examined our previous work on organic molecules using two semi-empirical methods, AM1 and PM3. This new approach can be an efficient protocol in designing new molecules with improved properties.

  • The analysis methods of blast analysis models are classified into direct analysis and indirect analysis, and the latter is divided into semi-empirical and numerical analysis methods. In order to evaluate the applicability of the ELS blast analysis program, which is a program for analyzing the semi-empirical models, this study selected a simplified analytical model and examined the blast load characteristics of free-air burst explosion and surface burst explosion by using AT-Blast, RC-Blast, and Kinney and Graham's empirical equations, which are the semi-empirical analysis programs. As a result of analyzing the explosion pressure for the scaled distance and the incidence angle for the simplified analytical model, an appropriate analysis can be performed when the range of the scaled distance in the free-air burst explosion analysis was 0.3~0.461 and when the range of the scaled distance in the surface burst explosion analysis was 0.378~0.581. In terms of the incidence angle, the results analyzed within $45^{\circ}$ were considered to be appropriate.

  • In this study, for development of the MDO (Multi Disciplinary Optimization) framework, the flight dynamic characteristic parameters of the ChangGong-91, a light aircraft, were extracted by an analytical method based on various semi-empirical methods, and the flight test method was compared and evaluated. The semi-empirical analysis methods for comparative subjects were the Perkins method, McCormick method, and Smetana method. The major stability/control derivatives and dynamic factors were calculated, using each method. As the comparison criteria, the flight test derivative estimates and dynamic factors were processed, using the output error method. Additionally, the flight characteristics of the light aircraft were analyzed and evaluated according to the provisions of the Korean Airworthiness Standard (KAS) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and MIL-F-8785C for the U.S. military.

  • In order to predict trailing edge noise from a flat plate more effectively and accurately, the prediction algorithm based on semi-analytic model for point pressure spectrum is proposed. The semi-analytic model consists of empirical models for point pressure spectra and theoretical model to determine the boundary layer characteristics needed for the empirical models. The proposed methods are applied to predict the trailing edge noise of the flat plate located in the mean flow of speed 38 m/s, for which the measured data are available. In present study, six empirical models for point pressure spectra are utilized for the predictions of trailing edge noise and their prediction results are compared to the measured data. Through the analysis of these comparisons, it is revealed that the present method based on non-frozen formula using Efimtsov model and Smol'yakov-Tkachenko model can provide more accurate and efficient predictions of trailing edge noise.

  • Semi-empirical MO calculations, EHT, CNDO/2, MINDO/3, and MNDO met hods, were performed on various geometries of n-butane, n-alkyl radical and tetramethylene diracal (triplet) in order to compare eigenvalue and eigenvector properties with those obtained by STO-3G method. All methods predicted the same relative order of stabilities of various geometries for n-butane; geometrical preferences were found to be dominated by one-electron factor, ${\pi}$-orbital energy changes being more impotant in the semi-empirical methods. The hyperconjugative energy changes accompanying structural changes from $(n-{\sigma}{\ast})_{trans}$ to (n-{\sigma}{\ast})cis were underestimated in the EHT, CNDO/2 and MINDO/3, whereas those were overestimated in the MNDO. The net destabilizing effect of $(n-{\sigma}{\ast})_{trans}$ structure was mainly due to the large internuclear energy involved in the structure. Through-space interaction between $n_1$ and $n_2$ orbitals of diradical caused energy gap narrowing of ${\Delta}E_{sp}$ and ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}={\varepsilon}_0$-${\varepsilon}_{av}$; through-space interaction had opposing effect to that of through-bond interaction. Due to the less severe neglect of differential overlaps in the MNDO, this energy gap narrowing effect appeared amplified in the MNDO. In general orbital properties were found to be reproduced satisfactorily, but eigenvalue properties were not, in all the semi-empirical methods especially when ${\sigma}-{\sigma}{\ast}$ and n-$n-{\sigma}{\ast}$interactions were involved.

  • This paper performed the prediction of the acoustic loads applied to the surface of the flight vehicle during flight. Acoustic loads during flight arise from the pressure fluctuations on the surface of body. The conventional method of predicting the acoustic loads in flight uses semi-empirical method derived from theoretical and experimental results. However, there is a limit in obtaining the flow characteristics and the boundary layer parameters of the flight vehicle which are used as the input values of the empirical equation through experiments. Therefore, in this paper, we use the hybrid method which combines the results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with semi-empirical methods to predict the acoustic loads acting on flight vehicle during flight. For the flight vehicle with cone-cylinder-flare shape, acoustic loads were estimated for the subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and Max-q (Maximum dynamic pressure) condition flight. For the hybrid method, two kind of boundary layer edge estimation methods based on CFD results are compared and the acoustic loads prediction results were compared according to empirical equations presented by various researchers.
