The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) developed by Lang and colleagues[1] is widely used in studies relating a variety of physiological indices to subjective emotions. In this study we investigated whether the IAPS can be used for Koreans without significant cultural biases in their subjective emotional reactions. Thirty IAPS picture slides were presented to a group of 52 college students and different 30 slides with similar 3 dimensional emotion ratings to another group of 42 students. Fof each slieds with exposal time of 8sec, subjects were asked to rate on the Semantic Differential Scale (SDS) and Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) in the 3 dimensions of pleasure valence, arousal, and domensions of pleasure valence, arousal, and dominance. Fnctor analysis was done for SDS ratings, and correlations of SDS and SAM were calculated. Eighteen bipolar adjective were grouped into 3 dimensions of pleasure, arousal, dominance showing good agreement with previous study. SAM were calculated. Eighteen bipolar adjectives were grouped into 3 dimensions of pleasure, arousal, dominance showing good agreement with the previous study. SAM ratings were highly corrlated with two of the 6 SDS adjective pairs associated with the pleasure and dominance dimensions, but not with those associated with arousal dimension suggerting some cultural differences.
The discrete state theory on emotion postulated that there existed discrete emotions, such as happiness, anger, fear, disgust, and so forth. Many investigators who emphasized discreteness of emotions have suggested that discrete emotions entailed their specific activities in the autonomic nervous system. The purposes of this study were to develop a model of emotion-specific physiological response patterns. The study postulated six emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise) as the basic discrete emotions. Thirty eight college students participated in the present study. Twelve slides (2 for each emotion category) were presented to the subjects in random order. During resting period of 30 s prior to the presentation of each slide, four presentation of each slide, four physiological measures (EEG, ECG, EDA, and respiration) were recorded to establish a baseline. The same physiological measures were recorded while each slide was being presented for 60 s (producing an emotional sate). Then, the subjects were asked to rate the degree of emotion induced by the slide on semantic differential scales. This procedure was repeated for every slide. Based upon the results, a model of emotion-specific physiological response patterns was developed: four emotion (fear, disgust, sadness, and anger) were classified according to the characteristics of EEG and autonomic responses. However, emotions of happiness and surprise were not distinguished by any combination of the physiological measures employed in this study, suggesting another appropriate measure should be adopted for differentiation.
The purpose of this study is to apply fundamental data of impression formation research by analysing and observing the various facial image that can be effected from hair style as well as be helpful for choosing suitable hair style for T.P.O in modern society. This study targeted 305 college women in Daegu and Gyung-book area. Hair Style Image Scale(HSIS)was used the scale of seven point modified the S-D(Semantic Differential) method. The analysis of impression formation effect of hair style using SPSS WIN package have completed from the principal component analysis by Varimax perpendicular rotation method and ANOVA was used to recognize the difference in impression formation according to hair style change. In the case of statistical difference was appeared, LSD post-verification was applied for that. The conclusions of this study is as followed ; 1. The factors of impression formation effected by hair style were classified as goodwill factor, refinement factor, elegance factor and individuality factor. 2. In terms of goodwill factor, long hair style showed highest level and short cut hair, bobbed hair in an order. In refinement factor, there was no difference between short cut hair and bobbed hair and both of them was higher than long hair. In elegance factor, long hair was highest and bobbed hair was lowest. In individuality factor, short cut hair and bobbed hair higher than long hair and no difference between short cut hair and bobbed hair.
This research studied the first impression of a stranger in various styles of Korean or Western attire in several socially interacting contexts. The semantic differential scale was used to analyze the responses of IHO male and 180 female university students to line drawings of male and female figures in Korean or Western formal and informal attire in campus, office, and ambiguous contexts. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. Six factors emerged to account for dimensions of first impressions. These were evaluation, potency, prestige and formality, conformity, likableness, and conspicuousness. Clothing styles had a larger effect on responses than context. Persons in traditional Korean styles were perceived as more prestigious, formal, individualistic, and less competent than those in Western styles. Conversely persons in both formal and informal Western styles were perceived as more attractive and more competent than those in traditional Korean styles. Persons in casual Western styles were considered least prestigious and least formal. A weak interaction effect was found between clothing style and social context.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between weight of fabrics and texture and sensibility and preference of consumers for F/W women's jacket fabrics. Structural Equation Model(SEM) using AMOS program was conducted to analyze the relationships. Then, this study aimed to provide useful information in planning designing fabrics through predicting the subjective characteristics analyzed. The main survey was developed the 7-point semantic differential scale of subjective texture, sensibility and preference. Fifty trained female panelists of 20-30 years old were participated and questionnaire method was used with 20 kind of fabric. The evaluation methods such as by the sense of sight & touch were used when fabrics were estimated subjectively. When evaluated by the sense of sight & touch, fabric's weight did not have effect directly on preference, but had effect indirectly on preference through the texture and the sensibility..

Because hand-written characters, especially drawn by a brush can give readers various impressions, they are not only a communication method but also art works. Authors have already investigated the relationship between brush motion analytical results and sensory testing results obtained from Japanese hiragana and reported quantitative evaluation method for the beauty of hiragana, In this paper, sensory tests for South Koreans who cannot recognize the word are carried out, compared with sensory testing results of Japanese. The evaluation objects are 6 hiragana drawn by 4 beginners and 2 experts, Semantic Differential Method based on 30 paired evaluation words are used in the sensory tests. Therefore South Koreans also feel the beauty in hiragana drawn by experts, as compared with by beginners. On the other hand it was confirmed that South Koreans couldnt recognize the difference among beginners. Judging from the factor analysis results, both Japanese and South Koreans selected stability as the 1st factor, there is interesting difference in the following orders.
The purpose of this study is to analyse design characteristics of the boutique hotel guestrooms to formalize their internal design concepts, and to evaluate the emotional response to these concepts, focusing on the response of consumers to the current trend of designs. It seems to be important, therefore, that this study are able to provide basic information necessary to establish a successful design strategy from the viewpoint of design marketing. This study was carried out with the guestrooms of 'O' Hotel, located at Paju, Gyeonggi-do Province, Korea, that is considered to fully introduce the concepts of 'Boutique Hotel.' A preliminary survey was performed by taking pictures and visiting the field from the 17th to 19th day of January 2008. Based on its results, a questionnaire survey as a major survey was conducted using a slide show according to Semantic Differential Scale on March 5, 2008. The collected data was evaluated by 50 students who majored in interior architectural design at D college, and was analysed using the SPSS Package
Purpose: This study is a descriptive study to analyze the relationship between the cognitive function, body image and pain, and the influencing factors on the daily life performance of brain injured patients. Methods: The study subjects were 119 inpatients with brain injury who gave informed consent. The activities of daily living (ADLs), cognitive function, pain and body image were measured by Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI), K-MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Semantic Differential Method (SDM), respectively. Results: ADLs was significantly associated with body image, cognitive function, and pain. Multiple regression analysis showed that paralysis, consciousness, cognitive function, and pain were significant factors influencing ADLs. Overall, approximately 48% of total variability in the ADLs could be explained by the 4 variables ($R^2=.477$, p<.001). Conclusion: To improve ADLs of brain injury patients, a deeper understanding of paralysis, consciousness, cognitive function, and pain of patients is required and active nursing invention should be conducted.
