  • A historical investigation reveals that English preposition with underwent a change from OPPOSITION to ASSOCIATION and further to ACCOMPANIMENT, where the first stage shows peculiarity in that the two concepts involved comprise an unusual set to form an extensional chain. Intrigued by this oddity, this paper aims to investigate the semantic structure of English preposition with from a grammaticalization perspective. We review mechanisms and models of semantic change and evaluate their adequacy with the semantic structure and change shown by with. Drawing upon the observed fact that with underwent the apparent antonymic semantic change, it is argued that such semantic change mechanisms as metaphor, metonymy, subjectification, and generalization have difficulties explaining the change, and that only the Frame-of-Focus Variation can effectively account for this peculiar change type. In terms of semantic change models, we argue that the Bleaching Model cannot effectively provide an explanation; that the Loss and Gain Model has problems in explaining the motivation of change directions; that the Metonymic-Metaphoric Model cannot be assessed at the current level of investigation; and that the Overlap Model and the Prototype Extension Model excellently account for the macro-level changes.

  • Semantic service can be defined as the service providing search API or reasoning API based on ontology and Web Services. It performs a pre-defined task by exploiting URI, classes, and properties. This study introduces a semantic service composition method based on a semantic broker referring ontology and management information of semantic services stored in a semantic service manager with requirements of the user. The requirements consist of input instances, an output class, a visualization type, semantic service names, and property names. This composition method provides dynamically generated semantic service pipelines including composit semantic services. The user can execute the pipelines provided by the semantic broker to find a meaningful semantic pipeline. After all, this study contributes to develop a system supporting human service planners who want to find composit semantic services among distributed semantic services.

  • In this paper, we describe a generation mechanism of semantic-based queries for high accuracy information retrieval and question answering. It is difficult to offer the correct retrieval result because general information retrieval systems do not analyze the semantic of user's natural language question. We analyze user's question semantically and extract semantic features, and we .generate semantic-based queries using them. These queries are generated using the se-mantic-based question analysis grammar and the query generation rule. They are represented as semantic features and grammatical morphemes that consider semantic and syntactic structure of user's questions. We evaluated our mechanism using 100 questions whose answer type is a person in the TREC-9 corpus and Web. There was a 0.28 improvement in the precision at 10 documents when semantic-based queries were used for information retrieval.

  • A user can use resources on the Semantic Web using a Semantic Web browser. In order to utilize the functions of Semantic Web browsers in education, we compared the functions of well-known Semantic Web browsers such as Tabulator, Contextual Search Browser (CSB), Magpie, and Piggy Bank. In order to utilize Semantic Web browsers in education, a user needs to understand the features of each Semantic Web browser and our work can help both teachers and students. Tabulator is an RDF browser that can help to check whether resources can be used for learning and relevance of resources. CSB can be used to search educational resources using a conrtext file that contains the subjects of learning. It can also help learning by showing semantic web resources in the form of triple set as well as by supporting highlighting function. Magpie can help learners without basic knowledge on learning materials by providing interpretation based on a glossary file and related background knowledge. Piggy Bank supports conversion of web resources into semantic web resources and allows to browse semantic web resources in various views as well as to share semantic web resources.

  • Semantic photo retrieval has been an important role in reducing the semantic gap between the simple visual features and the abundant semantics delivered by a photo. Effective photo retrieval using semantics is one of the major challenges in photo retrieval. And we propose a new event semantic photo retrieval method by using photo annotation user interface. In this paper, A photo album management system that facilitates photo management and semantic retrieval, which fully relies on the MPEG-7 standard as an information base and a native XML database, has been designed and implemented.

  • To upgrade the subjective question grading, we need the syntactic-semantic analysis to analyze syntatic-semantic relation between words in answering. However, since the syntactic-semantic tree has structural and semantic relation between words, we can not apply the method calculating the similarity between vectors. This paper suggests the comparing system with syntactic-semantic tree which has structural and semantic relation between words. In this thesis, we suggest similarity calculation principles for comparing the trees and verify the principles through experiments. This system will help the subjective question grading by comparing the trees and be utilized in distinguishing similar documents.

  • To solve the problem that existing computing methods cannot adequately represent the semantic features of sentences, Siamese TRAT, a semantic feature extraction model based on Transformer encoder is proposed. The transformer model is used to fully extract the semantic information within sentences and carry out deep semantic coding for sentences. In addition, the interactive attention mechanism is introduced to extract the similar features of the association between two sentences, which makes the model better at capturing the important semantic information inside the sentence. As a result, it improves the semantic understanding and generalization ability of the model. The experimental results show that the proposed model can improve the accuracy significantly for the semantic similarity calculation task of English and Chinese, and is more effective than the existing methods.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of design parameters of vibrotactile signals on semantic association with transmitted information conveying different meanings. Background: As information communication relying on human visual channel becomes excessive, the utility of vibrotactile signals is being interested as a substitute measure of delivering information. Properly designed hapticons may relieve burden of visual communication by rendering distinct and meaningfully compatible haptic sensations. Method: A typical Kansei engineering approach was adopted in this study. Ten most distinctive hapticons were selected among those having different frequencies and amplitudes. Associations between the hapticons and twenty four pairs of adjectives used to describe the state of automobile in control were gathered from thirty subjects using semantic differential scales. Results: The selected pairs of adjectives were summarized by factor analysis into two semantic dimensions named 'Awareness' and 'Directionality'. The experimental hapticons matched with the semantic dimensions were presented as a haptic emotion map. Conclusion: The results from this study support that frequencies and amplitudes of haptic signals play important roles in arousing different human perceptions regarding the two haptic emotional dimensions. Application: Properly designed hapticons with respect to the contents of transmitted information will increase human operator's situation awareness as well as system performance. The result from this study can be used to develop standardized hapticons for active haptic communication.

  • We in this paper propose a semantic search system based on Korean medicine ontology. Semantic search augments search results and improves search accuracy by understanding which concept denotes terms which users is trying to find. Our semantic search system also provides these semantic search capabilities. Moreover, search scenarios which is meaningful in Korean medicine are designed and implemented by analyzing the semantics of Korean medicine ontology. Therefore, our system can help users find the useful search results with respect to Korean medicine by providing the more meaningful information as well as the connected information in ontology.

It is difficult to offer the correct answer because general question answering systems do not analyze the semantic of user's natural language question. We analyze user's question semantically and extract semantic features using the semantic feature extraction grammar and characteristics of natural language question. We evaluated our approach using 100 questions whose answer type is a person in the web. We showed that a deep analysis of questions which are comparatively short but enough to mean can analysis the user's intention and extract semantic features.
