  • This study is a one-group pretest-posttest design to evaluate the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) for patient safety on self-leadership, patient safety competencies, and reflective thinking of nursing students. The research was conducted from March 2 to April 15, 2022, in which 57 nursing students participated. PBL for patient safety was examined in a total of 8 sessions in the order of motivation, problem identification, task performance planning, problem-solving methods, summary and solution, presentation, and evaluation. The following topics of patient safety were selected for each team: nursing records, high-alert medication, medication error and intravenous fluid regulation, blood transfusion care, fall, bedsore, infection control, and pain management. We provided feedback on the learning process and outcomes of nursing students. According to the results, self-leadership showed a statistically significant improvement in self-expectations (t=2.60, p=0.01), goal setting (t=2.84, p<0.01), self-reward (t=3.32, p<0.01), and self-criticism (t=2.32, p=0.02). Patient safety competencies showed a statistically significant improvement in patient safety knowledge (t=13.05, p<0.001) and patient safety skills (t=4.87, p<0.001) but not in reflective thinking. The results prove that PBL for patient safety is an effective teaching-learning strategy to improve self-leadership and patient safety competencies. Future studies must develop and validate specific and long-term teaching-learning methods to improve reflective thinking.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify factors associated with effective peer-assisted learning (PAL) for nursing students. This review examined studies on PAL in nursing education. The literature was searched using terms including 'nursing & peer assisted learning,' 'nursing & peer learning,' and 'nursing & peer teaching.' Potentially relevant research on PAL was identified, and 12 studies were determined to meet the inclusion criteria. This review includes five qualitative, three mixed-methods, and three experimental studies published on the topic. In the studies reviewed, practicum classes were found to use PAL the most. Students of the same age were most commonly the subjects of PAL, as indicated in six papers. PAL has been suggested to affect participants' knowledge, self-efficacy, confidence, and anxiety. The findings indicate that interactions between peers promote learning and lead to mutually positive responses, which provide opportunities for self-development. Finally, students' learning outcomes improve and their confidence in their knowledge and skills increases as they experience the role of student nurse. These findings indicate that PAL can be utilized as an efficient learning method in nursing education programs. However, effective strategies for using PAL to achieve learning objectives and maximize learning outcomes are needed.

  • A knowledge-based society values creative and independent individuals. This study depicts operational approaches to the effective utilization of school libraries as teaching/learning media center in order to support independent learning in relation to the way in which constructivist teaching-learning(CTL) improves learners' self-learning abilities. The result of this study seems to imply that self-learning based on constructivism is possible only when school libraries are managed as teaching/learning media centers and that the more variety there is in learning materials and when more direct interaction exists, there is more creativity and self-learning abilities are achieved in the learning process.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop elementary students' ability to generate hypothesis knowledge through knowledge generation learning in science. The learning program consisted of a series of 28 activities to generate hypotheses in science. Eighty 6th grade students participated in the study and were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was administered a program geared towards hypothesis generation learning and the control group was administered a program aimed at hypothesis expository learning in elementary science. After using the respective programs, subjects in both groups were tested in terms of their abilities in abductive knowledge generation and administered a descriptive self-report regarding their generation of hypotheses. Two of the 28 activity program worksheets in the experimental group were analyzed in terms of the quality and process of students' hypothesis generation. The results were as follows: 1) The experimental group showed significantly higher scores in terms of scientific knowledge generation (i.e. abductive knowledge generation) than the control group. 2) The degree of hypothesis explanation in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group in terms of the quality of the generated hypotheses. In addition, students in the experimental group generated more varied and valid knowledge than the control group in terms of sub-knowledge of hypothesis generation. Therefore, it can be argued that this program for hypothesis knowledge generation in elementary science students was effective in the generation of hypothesis knowledge.

  • In this study we developed an ontology-based e-learning system for supporting self-directed learning. In this system, a domain ontology of a learning topic was constructed and relation properties were defined to indicate the relations among the learning concepts. The learning concepts and their relationships are structured visually through the domain ontology. It also boosts understandabilities of students by means of the visualization of relationships among the pre and post concepts. In addition, the system provides reasoning so that learners can do intelligent query when they want to learn more or they are curious about the high-level knowledge while they are learning a topic. These features of the system would help learners' self-directed and active learning.
