Two different diene monomers [dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and 5-ethylidene-2-norbomene (ENB)] as selfhealing agent for polymeric composites were microencapsuled by in-situ polymerization of urea and formaldehyde. The healing agents were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Exothermic reaction and glass transition temperature from DSC and storage modulus (G') and tan $\delta$ from DMA curves were analyzed for the samples cured for 5 min and 24 h in the presence of different amounts of catalyst. Micorcapsules were successfully formed for both diene monomers. Microcapsules containing the healing agent were manufactured and its thermal properties were characterized by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Optical microscope (OM) and particle size analyzer (PSA) were employed to observe morphology and size distribution of microcapsules, respectively. Comparison of the two self-healing agents and their microcapsules with the two was made in this study.
In general, cracks significantly deteriorate the in-situ performance of concrete members and structures, especially in urban metro tunnels that have been embedded in saturated soft soils. The microcapsule self-healing method is a newly developed healing method for repairing cracked concrete. To investigate the optimal microcapsule parameters that will have the best healing effect in concrete, a 3D analytical probability healing model is proposed; it is based on the microcapsule self-healing method's healing mechanism, and its purpose is to predict the healing efficiency and healing probability of given cracks. The proposed model comprehensively considers the radius and the volume fraction of microcapsules, the expected healing efficiency, the parameters of cracks, the broken ratio and the healing probability. Furthermore, a simplified probability healing model is proposed to facilitate the calculation. Then, a Monte Carlo test is conducted to verify the proposed 3D analytical probability healing model. Finally, the influences of microcapsules' parameters on the healing efficiency and the healing probability of the microcapsule self-healing method are examined in light of the proposed probability model.
The object of this study is to prepare microcapsules containing a diisocyanate compound, apply them to self-healing protective coating, and evaluate the self-healing capability of the coating by atmospheric moisture. Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) polymerized under humid atmosphere, indicating that IPDI can be used as a healing agent. Microencapsulations of IPDI were conducted via interfacial polymerization of a polyurethane prepolymer with diol compounds. The formation of microcapsules was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The mean diameter, size distribution, morphology and shell wall thickness of microcapsules were investigated by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The properties of microcapsules were studied by varying agitation rates and diol structure. The self-healing coatings were prepared on test pieces of CRC board. When scratch was generated in the coatings, the core material flew out of the microcapsules and filled the scratch. The self-healing coatings were damaged and healed under atmosphere with 68~89% relative humidity for 48 h, and SEM and impermeability test for the specimens showed that the scratch could be healed by atmospheric moisture.

In this study, self-healing hybrid capsules were prepared by mixing self-healing solid capsules and self-healing microcapsules using inorganic materials as core materials. Self-healing hybrid capsules were mixed with 3 % according to the composition ratio of 3:7, 5:5, and 7:3 based on the mass of the cement to prepare a self-healing cement composite material. The healing properties of crack self-healing hybrid capsules were evaluated through hydrostatic water permeability test and surface crack monitoring. It was found that the self-healing hybrid capsules prepared by mixing the composition ratio of the self-healing solid capsules and the self-healing microcapsules at 7:3 has a great effect on improving the crack self-healing performance.

Recently, the self-healing technique is being investigated to repair the damaged polymeric composites by the use of microcapsules with the healing agent. This technique can obtains both the damage detection and the damage repair simultaneously over the converntional repairing techniques. In this study, the effects of the catalyst ratio to the healing agent and thermal characteristics to the mixtures of healing agent are investigated through single lap shear tests and DSC. The Healing agents such as DCPD, ENB, and their mixtures are considered and Grubb's catalyst is used as a catalst.
In this study, manufacturing process for microcapsules with the self-healing agent was introduced and the characteristics of microcapsules manufactured by varying with various manufacturing process variables were evaluated through a particle size analyzer, an optical microscope, and a TGA. Urea-formaldehyde resin was used for the thin wall of microcapsules and DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) was used for the self-healing agent. The various manufacturing process variables, such as (1) 24hr, 40hr, 48hr, 60hr of the solution time of the EMA copolymer, (2) pH3.5, pH4.0, pH4.5 of the hydrogen ion concentration of the emulsified solution, (3) 400rpm, 500rpm, 600rpm, 1000rpm of the agitation speed of the emulsified solution, (4) $50^{\circ}$, $55^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ of the reaction temperature of the emulsified solution, were considered. According to the results, the particle size distribution of microcapsules was affected on the agitation speed, and the thermal stability of microcapsules was influenced by the solution time of the EMA copolymer, the hydrogen ion concentration, and the reaction temperature of the emulsified solution. Therefore, suitable manufacturing process variables should be applied to obtain thermally stable microcapsules capable of containing the healing agent capable until the thin wall of microcapsules were to be burned.

Microcapsules were prepared by using a mixture of linseed oil and a small amount of fluorescent fluid as a core material. Self-healing protective coatings were prepared by applying coating formulations containing varying amounts of microcapsules on mortar surface. After scratch or crack was generated in the coating, when the damaged region was exposed to ultraviolet light (${\lambda}=365nm$), it was observed that fluorescence emission area increased with increasing microcapsule loading. In the cases of the self-healing coatings having 20wt% or more microcapsule loading, the damaged region was almost filled with the healing agent. In water sorptivity test, the self-healing coating having 20wt% or more microcapsule loading showed a healing efficiency of about 85%. The fluorescence emission from the damaged region was easily observed at a distance of 3 m. The self-healing protective coating is expected to be useful to confirm its self-healing function with the eye.

In this study, the development of a self-healing concrete waterproofing agent was examined, focusing on its manufacturing and waterproofing properties. The optimal ratio using microcapsules for the concrete waterproofing agent was determined through assessments of flow, compressive strength, and permeability conducted during the mortar stage. These findings aimed to provide fundamental data for evaluating the self-healing properties of the concrete waterproofing agent designed for use in concrete structures. The self-healing concrete waterproofing agent was comprised of three types of inorganic materials commonly used for repair purposes. From experimental results, a composition ratio with a high potassium silicate content, referred to as SIM-2, was found suitable. A surfactant mixing ratio of 0.03 % was identified to enhance the dispersibility of the concrete waterproofing agent, while a mixing ratio of 0.2 % distilled water was deemed suitable for viscosity adjustment. For the magnetic self-healing concrete waterproofing agent's healing agent, using microcapsules in the range of 0.5 % to 0.7 % met the KS F 4949 and KS F 4926 standards.
Microcapsules containing the suspension of conducting materials such as carbon nanotube (CNT) or polyaniline (PANI) were prepared by in-situ polymerization of melamine and formaldehyde. Stable microcapsules were prepared and the mean diameter of the observed microcapsules was in the range of $10-20{\mu}m$. The surface morphology and chemical structure of microcapsules were investigated using optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The thermal properties of samples were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The conductivity of ruptured microcapsule containing the suspension of CNTs or PANIs in tetrachloroethylene and Isopar-G was measured. As the amount of CNTs and PANIs in the core of microcapsules increased, the measured current increased. Conductivity measurement results suggest that poly (melamine-formaldehyde) based core-shell microcapsules could be applied to self-healing electronic materials systems, where CNTs or PANIs bridge a broken circuit upon release.
