  • Self healing systems are considered as cognation-enabled sub form of fault tolerance system. But our experiments that we report in this paper show that self healing systems can be used for performance optimization, configuration management, access control management and bunch of other functions. The exponential complexity that results from interaction between autonomic systems and users (software and human users) has hindered the deployment and user of intelligent systems for a while now. We show that if that exceptional complexity is converted into self-growing knowledge (policies in our case), can make up for initial development cost of building an intelligent system. In this paper, we report the application of AHSEN (Autonomic Healing-based Self management Engine) to in OKKAM Project infrastructure backbone cluster that mimics the web service based architecture of u-Zone gateway infrastructure. The 'blind' load division on per-request bases is not optimal for distributed and performance hungry infrastructure such as OKKAM. The approach adopted assesses the active threads on the virtual machine and does resource estimates for active processes. The availability of a certain server is represented through worker modules at load server. Our simulation results on the OKKAM infrastructure show that the self healing significantly improves the performance and clearly demarcates the logical ambiguities in contemporary designs of self healing infrastructures proposed for large scale computing infrastructures.

  • A probabilistic micromechanical framework is proposed to quantify numerically the self-healing capabilities of polymers containing microcapsules. A two-step self-healing process is designed in this study: A probabilistic micromechanical framework based on the ensemble volume-averaging method is derived for the polymers, and a hitting probability model combined with a crack nucleation model is then utilized for encountering microcapsules and microcracks. Using this framework, a series of parametric investigations are performed to examine the influence of various model parameters (e.g., the volume fraction of microcapsules, microcapsule radius, radius ratio of microcracks to microcapsules, microcrack aspect ratio, and scale parameter) on the self-healing capabilities of the polymers. The proposed framework is also implemented into a finite element code to solve the self-healing behavior of tapered double cantilever beam specimens.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of capacitor elements at self healing. Self healing events were forced to be created by the over-rated voltage of the capacitor elements. The self healing site was photographed by the Scanning Electron Microscope and the by-products of self healing were analyzed by the Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer. Also the self healing site was analyzed by the Differential Scanning Calorimeter and the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. As a result, the main component of by-products due to the hum cut at self healing was carbon. The Fourier Transform Infrared analysis result of the self-healing specimen was similar to that of the virgin specimen, however, different from that of the specimen thermally treated at 500$^{\circ}C$. It was observed that heat flow peaks of virgin specimen were different from self-healing specimen by the Differential Scanning Calorimeter analysis.

  • In this study, the applicability of mechanochemical process for the manufacture of self-healing admixtures and the effect of mechanochemical process on the self-healing performance were evaluated. The self-healing admixtures were adopted as a highly reactive materials(expansive agent, swelling material and crystal growth agent) for mechanochemical processes. The self-healing admixtures for the mechanochemical process application were evaluated by X-Ray Diffraction and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis, water permeability performance was used to evaluate self-healing performance of mortar. As a result of the evaluation, the self-healing performance of the WM(With-Mortar)3 sample to which mechanochemical process increased by 4.1% compared to the WM1 sample that was not treated, and the average healing index was 94.3%.

  • In this study, the self-healing effect of a fiber-reinforced cement composite (FRCC) was examined using a drying-wetting test and an outdoor exposure test. The influence of various curing conditions on the self-healing effect of the FRCC was also investigated. The effect of self-healing was evaluated using a permeability coefficient and by investigating the cracks using a optical microscope. The results confirmed that the FRCC was capable of self-healing under a long wetting time and a low drying temperature. In addition, watertight performance by self-healing was shown to have a significant influence on wetting time. Meanwhile, this self-healing effect was enhanced by hydration as a result of rainfall when the FRCC was put under actual environmental conditions. Moreover, it was determined that cracking self-healing can be improved by using the appropriate admixture materials.

  • A reinforced concrete water tank is a typical functional liquid storage structure and cracks are the greatest threat to the liquid storage structure. Tanks are readily cracked due to seismic activity, thereby leading to the leakage of the stored liquid and a loss of function. In order to study the effect of cracks on liquid storage tanks, self-healing and leakage tests for bending cracks and through cracks in the walls of a reinforced concrete water tank were conducted. Material performance tests were also performed. The self-healing performance of bending cracks in a lentic environment and through cracks in a lotic environment were tested, thereby the self-healing width of bending micro-cracks in the lentic environment in the short term were determined. The through cracks had the capacity for self-healing in the lotic environment was found. The leakage characteristics of the bending cracks and through cracks were tested with the actual water head on the crack. The effects on liquid leakage of the width of bending cracks, the depth of the compression zone, and the acting head were determined. The relationships between the leakage rate and time with the height of the water head were analyzed. Based on the tests, the relationships between the crack characteristics and self-healing as well as the leakage were obtained. Thereby the references for water tank structure design and grading earthquake damage were provided.

  • This study investigated the thermal stability of Grubbs' catalyst and its reactivity with self-healing agents for self-healing damage repair. Four types of Grubbs' catalyst supplied by manufacturers were considered and each catalyst was tested in as-received and grinded conditions. Four types of self-healing agents were prepared by varying the mixing ratio of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and 5-ethylidene-2-norbonene (ENB). Heat flows as a function of temperature were measured through a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the thermal stability of catalysts. Reaction heats of self-healing agents with the catalyst were measured to evaluate the reactivity of the catalyst. For this evaluation, Fluka Chemika Grubbs' catalyst was used based on the maximum temperature and the time to reach the maximum temperature. According to the results, catalysts had different shapes depending on the manufacturer and the results showed that the smaller the size of the catalyst the higher the reactivity with self-healing agents. As the ENB ratio in self-healing agents increased, the maximum temperature increased, and the time to reach the maximum temperature decreased. As the amount of the catalyst increased, the maximum temperature increased, and the time to reach the maximum temperature decreased. Considering the thermal stability of the catalyst and its reactivity with the self-healing agent, combination of 0.5 wt% catalyst and the D3E1 self-healing agent was optimal for self-healing damage repair. Finally, as the thermal decomposition may occur depending on the environmental temperature, the catalyst must not be exposed to temperature higher than that is necessary to maintain the thermal stability of the catalyst.
