Methods: This study was a case study and 82 senior nursing students at a university participated in a learning contract based practice placement. Data were collected from written learning contracts and questionnaires after a clinical practice. Results: The students' learning needs were knowledge, clinical skills, and attitudes frequently encountered in a ward in which clinical skills were most common. The students' formulated learning contracts were varied but most of them were basic and simple. A self-directed clinical course was beneficial and a satisfactory experience to senior students. There was an increase in the students' motivation in learning, confidence in own capability, and satisfaction with the use of the learning contract. Conclusion: Self-directed clinical practicum would result in a degree of attitude change in the students. This study suggests that learning contract based self-directed clinical practice is effective to improve learning satisfaction, confidence in own capability, and competency.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of an academic tutoring program on interpersonal relationships, self- directed learning capability and academic self-efficacy. The research question posed in this study was whether an academic tutoring program would affect interpersonal relationships, self-directed learning capability and academic self-efficacy. To address the research question, a self-administered survey was conducted to gather data on 214 students who participated in an academic tutoring program during a semester from September 4 to November 10, 2017. The findings of the study were as follows: After their participation in the tutoring program, there was a little decrease in self-directed learning capability and personal learning orientation, and they made progress in interpersonal relationships and academic self-efficacy. By gender, there was the greatest improvement in interpersonal relationships as well after their participation in the tutoring program. By academic year and motivation for participation, they showed the best improvement in interpersonal relationships as well, followed by academic self-efficacy. In other words, it could be said that the parts which the tutoring program brought about the biggest change to and worked best on were interpersonal relationships and academic self-efficacy. In conclusion, the improvement of interpersonal relationships and academic self-efficacy could boost not only the school adjustment of students but their academic levels and then eventually prevent them from dropping out. Therefore this program seems to be one of outstanding learning programs that could make a contribution to the stable management and qualitative competitiveness of universities.

Third, they should be encouraged to have an energetic discussion in small group when the developed packages are applied. Conclusion: First, the packages developed in this study were just incorporated into some areas of a single course. In the future, the integration of an entire course or the development of a new course is required to attain the multiple learning objectives in the provided clinical situations. Second, this study attempted to develop the PBL packages to boost the problem-solving ability, self-directed learning capability and communicative competence of emergency medical technician students, and follow-up research should be implemented to finalize the packages based on the suggestions of the experts who evaluated them and to determine the effects of the packages.

Methods : After three PBL packages for a semester of oral health education were developed, the PBL packages were evaluated by an expert to determine what improvements should be made. Results : The findings of the study were as follows. The three PBL packages were based on real clinical situations and designed to have a different degree of difficulty and provide problems in the form of scenario for learners to solve in a self-directed manner. When the packages were assessed by an expert, the packages were expected to make a contribution to the improvement of the three different abilities on which this study focused, and the packages were found to be appropriate in general in terms of learning content and field applicability, though they needed some modifications. Thus, this study attempted to develop PBL packages and let an expert assess the packages in order to give some suggestions about the development of PBL packages. The packages developed in this study are expected to help boost the problem-solving abilities, self-directed learning capabilities and communicative competency of dental hygienists, which should all be possessed by dental hygienists in the dental field. Moreover, the packages were found to be conducive to the introduction of PBL in the field of dental hygiene. Conclusions : To ensure the successful application of the packages, dental hygiene students should be provided with the packages in situations similar to real clinical situations, and they should have an opportunity to practice dental hygiene duties.
