Effects of a Class-Based School Violence Prevention Program for Elementary School Students

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a class-based school violence prevention program for elementary school student. Methods: 29 students were assigned to the school violence prevention program of 8 sessions, 28 students have been assigned to the control group. We assessed participants at baseline and post-intervention, through their self-report questionnaires such as Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and school violence experience, awareness about school violence, and coping ability to school violence. We compared the baseline and post-intervention result of each group and compared the post-test scores between the intervention group and the control group. Results: Comparing the intervention group and the control group, the post-intervention CDI total score and the awareness about school violence showed significant improvement in the intervention group. When compared according to gender, male students' perception of school violence was improved, and female students showed significant differences in CDI scores. Conclusion: The CDI total scores and the perception of school violence were improved in the intervention group compared to the control group. And there are differential pattern of intervention effects according to gender. These findings have important implications to develop effective violence prevention programs.

Relationship between Academic Burnout of Medical and Graduate Students and Related Variables (의과대학·의학전문대학원생의 학업소진 양상과 관련 변인들과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of demographic data, academic demand, perfectionism, and academic failure tolerance on academic burnout of medical and graduate students at Yeungnam University. A mixed method study was conducted. Fourteen students participated in a focus group interview and 302 students, including 151 medical students and 151 graduate students, completed a survey, which addressed the factors of academic burnout, academic demand, perfectionism, and academic failure tolerance. There were significant differences in the academic burnout by age and year in school. The 2nd year medical & graduate students experienced significantly higher academic burnout than the other students. Multiple regression analysis revealed that academic burnout of medical and graduate students was significantly affected by academic demand (p<0.001), self-oriented and socially-prescribed perfectionism (p<0.001, p<0.01), and feeling and behavior, which were sub-factors of academic failure tolerance (p<0.05, p<0.01). It is suggested that comparative studies with other student groups, a longitudinal study of medical and graduate students, and a prospective study of coping styles and methods of preventing academic burnout need to be conducted.

Process Evaluation of the First Computer Tailored Program for Smoking Cessation among Romanian Smokers

  • The objective of this paper is to present the implementation and process evaluation of the first computer tailored program for smoking cessation among Romanian smokers. The program targeted adult smokers who declared the intention to quit smoking in the next six months. The intervention consisted of a letter tailored to several respondent characteristics: gender, cognitive variables (attitude, social influence, and self-efficacy), intention to quit smoking, goal and relapse prevention strategies (action and coping plans), and smoking behaviour. The first 80 participants entered into the program filled in a process evaluation questionnaire one month after the intervention. The results of our study confirmed that the participants had read and remembered the letter. Moreover, new for Romania, this approach was positively appreciated by the participant and the score received for the tailored letter was high. The opinions of the participants confirmed that the tailored letter provided information that was useful, trustworthy and relevant for the individual. At the same time, the participants appreciated the polite, easy to understand content of the letter. These data underlined the premises for continuing the program and for using the information and communication technologies for healthy lifestyle promotion among Romanian population.

Lived Experience of the Family Members of Gastric Cancer Patients (위암환자 가족들의 경험세계에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the study is to explore and describe the lived experience of family members with gastric cancer patients using the grounded theory methodology. The participants were ten spouses of gastric cancer patients who had some kind of treatment at the hospital. They were asked open-ended and descriptive questions in order for them to talk about their experiences in their own terms. As the interveiw progressed the questions became more specific to discuss themes and working hypotheses that emerged from the analysis of previous interviews. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed for the analysis. Constant the core category that was emerged from the comparative analysis is “magmaggam” which can be described as a psychological distress due to a high level of uncertainty regarding the health of the patient and the future of the caregivers. Psychological distress includes several emotional feelings such as frustration. anxiety, fear, guilty, and self depreciation. Subcategories or strategies related to the core category are 1) managing illness, 2) using folk medicine, 3) giving the patient a reason to live, 4) being patient, 5) losing reality, 6) anticipatory experience on the patient's death and parting, and 7) changing interpersonal relationships. The results of this study would help clinical nurses to develop nursing intervention to help spouses of gastric cancer patients establish efficient coping strategies in dealing with the problems they face.

Structual Equation Modeling on Adjustment of Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy (항암 화학요법을 받는 암 환자의 적응 구조모형)

  • Purpose: This study was to understand and explain the adjustment of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Variables in this model were social support, uncertainty, resilience and coping. Methods: The data were collected for approximately five months from May through to September 2006 with cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or cancer patients finished chemotherapy using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics program, Amos 5.0, was employed to verify the goodness of the hypothetic model and the hypotheses formulated in the study. Results: The fitness of the finalized model turned out to be improved ($X^2$=332.644, df=70, GFI= .809, AGFI= .714, RMSEA= .138, AIC=402.644). Those variables made a 60.8% prediction of the patients adjustment. Conclusion: The hypothetic model presented in the study could serve to explain the adjustment of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Moreover, the use of the conceptual framework of the theory of planned nursing intervention would be very worthwhile as a strategy to boost the adjustment of cancer patients when receiving chemotherapy.

Study of dental hygienists' recognition and experiences about sexual harassment in the workplace (치과위생사의 직장 내 성희롱 인식과 경험의 실태조사)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine dental hygienists' recognition and experiences about sexual harassment in the workplace and to provide the basic data for their perception improvement, prevention and coping plan about sexual harassment. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 307 dental hygienists who work at dental hospitals and clinics in Jeollabuk-do area, a questionnaire survey was conducted from December 1 to 31, 2016. Results: The 40.7% of study subjects had the experience of sexual harassment. They were identified to have the experiences of verbal sexual harassment (29.6%), physical sexual harassment (27.0%) and visual sexual harassment (22.5%) in order. The factors affecting the experiences of sexual harassment were experience of sexual-harassment education and concept of sexual harassment. Conclusions: A customized sexual prevention education program for dental hygienists will need to be produced, not the universalized sexual prevention education. In addition, it is considered to be necessary to prepare for a program available for being sympathized and understood by all members in the workplace.

Development and Evaluation of a Child Health Care Protocol for Child Day Care Center Teachers (보육교사를 위한 아동 건강관리 프로토콜 개발 및 평가)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a child health care protocol for teachers in child day care centers. Methods: The ADDIE model with 10 Kid Keys was applied to develop this child health care protocol. All contents were developed through content validity test by 7 professionals and need assessment and evaluation by child day care center teachers. Results: This protocol consisted of 10 keys, as follows: "Health Examination/Growth & Development", "Practice of Health Life", "Management of Communicable Disease", "Negligent Accident", "Coping with Emergency and Transference", "Child Abuse", "Nutrition/Obesity", "Quality Assurance of Staff", "Parent Education", "Guidance & Supervision of Child Day Care Centers". The contents contained goals, objectives, teaching content, suggested activities for children, writing forms related to each subject, and self-evaluation sheet. Conclusion: This protocol can be practical and effective for child health care in child day care centers and it is hoped that it will be utilized in more child day care centers.

An Experimental Study of Marginal Distortion Related to Heat treatment and Surface Treatment in Metal Copings for Metal-Ceramic Restorations (금속.도재수복물용 금속의 열처리 및 표면처리에 따른 변형에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the change of marginal distortion related to heat treatment and surface treatment in. Thirty copings were made on the self-curing resin dies and twenty coping among them were treated by heat and surface grinding. All copings were adapted on the respective dies and then were invested into the plastic boxes with tray resin. Both copiong and die invested in tray resin were cut through labio-lingually by a separating disc. This cross-cutting surface was ground and polished. Specimens were mounted on a light microscope and photographed. Marginal discrepancies were measured on photographes by a scale. The obtained results could be summarized in the followings : 1. In all metal copings, the distortion of cervical margin was shown after heat treatment and surface treatment. 2. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between shoulder and deep chamfer. 3. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between labial margin and lingual margin in one die. 4. In case of the copings which were not treated with preheating and were treated with surface grinding, the marginal distortion shows a tendency to increase.

Development and Effects of a Cognitive-behavioral Therapy Based Program in Reducing Internalized Stigma in Patients with Schizophrenia (조현병 환자의 내재화된 낙인 감소를 위한 인지행동 프로그램 개발 및 효과검증)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a internalized stigma reducing program based on cognitive-behavioral therapy and appropriate for patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate its effectiveness. Methods: The study design was a mixed method research. Qualitative study, 13 patients with schizophrenia who had experience in overcoming stigma were purposively chosen for interviews and data were analyzed using Giorgi method. Quantitative study, 64 patients with schizophrenia (experimental group =32, control group =32) were recruited. The cognitive-behavioral therapy-based program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia was provided for 8 weeks (12 sessions). Data were collected from June. 20, 2013 to Feb. 14, 2014. Quantitative data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS program. Results: Qualitative results, from the experience of coping with stigma in patients with schizophrenia seventeen themes and five themes-clusters were drawn up. Quantitative results showed that internalized stigma, self-esteem, mental health recovery and quality of life were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Study findings indicate that this program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia is effective and can be recommended as a rehabilitation program intervention to help patients with schizophrenia to cope with internalized stigma.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze and clarify the meaning of the concept for relocation stress -focusing on patients transferred from an intensive care unit to a general ward. Methods: This study used Walker and Avant's process of concept analysis. Results: Relocation stress can be defined by these attributes as follows: 1) involuntary decision about relocation, 2) moving from a familiar and safe environment to an unfamiliar one, 3) broken relationship of safety and familiarity, 4) physiological and psychosocial change after relocation. The antecedents of relocation stress consisted of these facts: 1) preparation degrees of transfer from the intensive care unit to a general ward, 2) pertinence of the information related to the transfer process, 3) change of major caregivers, 4) change in numbers of monitoring devices, 5) change in the level of self-care. There are consequences occurring as a result of relocation stress: 1) decrease in patients' quality of life, 2) decrease in coping capacity, 3) loss of control. Conclusion: Relocation stress is a core concept in intensive nursing care. Using this concept will contribute to continuity of intensive nursing care.
