  • The soundproof barrier used to reduce the traffic and rail noise is usually designed to the point of view of the acoustic performance such as absorption ratio and transmission loss. But, because the surface of soundproof barrier is polluted by the air pollutant or discharge gas of automobiles, so it's surface cleary maintained by the periodic washing with detergent. But in this case the environmental pollution and the working expenses are worried. So, the objective of this study is to develope the soundproof panel with the self-cleaning properties only by raining.

Elaboration and characterization of fiber-reinforced self-consolidating repair mortar containing natural perlite powder

  • This research project aimed at evaluating experimentally the effect of natural perlite powder as an alternative supplementary cementing material (SCM) on the performance of fiber reinforced self-consolidating repair mortars (FR-SCRMs). For this purpose, four FR-SCRMs mixes incorporating 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of natural perlite powder as cement replacements were prepared. The evaluation was based on fresh (slump flow, flow time, and unit weight), hardened (air-dry unit weight, compressive and flexural strengths, dynamic modulus of elasticity), and durability (water absorption test) performances. The results reveal that structural repair mortars confronting the performance requirements of class R4 materials (European Standard EN 1504-3) could be designed using 10%, 20%, and 30% of perlite powder as cement substitutions. Bonding results between repair mortars containing perlite powder and old concrete substrate investigated by the slant shear test showed good interlocking justifying the effectiveness of these produced mortars.

  • In recent years, the emergence of nanotechnology and nanomaterial has created hopes to improve various properties of concrete. Nano silica as one of these materials has been introduced as a cement replacement material for concrete mixture in construction applications. It can modify the properties of concrete, due to high pozzolanic reactions and also making a denser microstructure. On the other hand, it is well recognized that the use of mineral admixtures such as silica fume affects the mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials. In addition, the superior performance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and self-consolidating mortars (SCM) over conventional concrete is generally related to their ingredients. This study investigates the effect of nano silica and silica fume on the compressive strength and chloride permeability of self-consolidating mortars. Tests include compressive strength, rapid chloride permeability test, water permeability, capillary water absorption, and surface electrical resistance, which carried out on twenty mortar mixtures containing zero to 6 percent of nano silica and silica fume. Results show that SCMs incorporating nano silica had higher compressive strength at various ages. In addition, results show that nano silica has enhanced the durability SCMs and reduced the chloride permeability.

Hypocholesterolemic Effect of Tangerine Pulp, Sea Tangle or Prickly Pear Cactus on Lipid Level, Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption, Platelet Aggregation and Liver Tissue in Hypercholesterolemic Rats (감귤박, 다시마, 손바닥 선이장 분말을 함유한 식이의 급여가 고콜레스테롤혈증 흰쥐의 체내 지질수준과 장내 콜레스테롤 흡수, 혈소판 응집성 및 간 조직에 미치는 영향)

  • This study done to investigate the hypocholesterolemic effect of ow dietary fiber in a high cholesterol diet in aspect of cholesterol absorption and excretion using Sprague Dawley rats. After feeding diets containing 0.5% cholesterol and 5% tangerine pulp, sea tangle or prickly pear cactus for four weeks, we measured the levels of plasma and liver cholesterol and triglyceride, fecal neutral sterols and fecal radioactivity after ingestion 14(sup)C-cholesterol. We also examined platelet aggregation and histological change in liver tissues in association of hypercholesterolemia. The liver to body weight ratio was significantly(p<0.01) lower in rats fed prickly pear cactus than in other groups. The levels of plasma total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were decreased significantly(p<0.01) in the prickly pear cactus group compared with the control, while there was no difference in the liver levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride among groups. Fecal corprostanol and cholesterol were significantly(p<0.01) higher groups of control and prickly pear cactus compared to the other two groups. Radioisotope excretion after ingestion of 14(sup)C-cholesterol was higher in the control group than in tangerine pulp group or sea tangle group, with the highest in prickly pear group. Radioisotope excretion was the highest during the 2nd and 3rd days in all groups. Hematocrit and platelet aggregation were decreased in all fiber groups compared to the control, but not statistically different. Microscopic examination showed that cholesterol diet cause a fat accumulation in the liver and prickly pear cactus decreased the fat accumulation. Result indicates that prickly pear cactus has hypocholesterolemic effect by decreasing absorption and increasing excretion of cholesterol, thereby protective effect on fatty liver. Control group fed diet containing high cholesterol and low fiber seems to have a self control system in cholesterol absorption and excretion preventing hypercholesterolemia. Mechanical and durability properties of self-compacting concrete with blended binders

  • Over the past three decades, self-compacting concrete (SCC), which is characterized by its superior rheological properties, has been gradually used in construction industry. It is now recognized that the application of SCC using supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is highly attractive and promising technology reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry and reducing the higher materials costs. This paper presents an experimental study that investigated the mechanical and durability properties of SCCs manufactured with blended binders including fly ash, slag, and micro-silica. A total of 8 batches of SCCs were manufactured. As series of tests were conducted to establish the rheological properties, compressive strength, and durability properties including the water absorption, water permeability, rapid chloride permeability and initial surface absorption of the SCCs. The influences of the SCC strength grade, blended types and content on the properties of the SCCs are investigated. Unified reactive indices are proposed based on the mix proportion and the chemical composition of the corresponding binders are used to assess the compressive strength and strength development of the SCCs. The results also indicate the differences in the underlying mechanisms to drive the durability properties of the SCC at the different strength grades.

Performance of self-compacting concrete with manufactured crushed sand

  • Self-compacting concretes (SCC) are highly fluid concrete which can flow without any vibration. Their composition requires a large quantity of fines to limit the risk of bleeding and segregation. The use of crushed sand rich in limestone fines could be an adequate solution for both economic and environmental reasons. This paper investigates the influence of quarry limestone fines from manufactured crushed sand on rheological, mechanical and durability properties of SCC. For this purpose, five mixtures of SCC with different limestone fines content as substitution of crushed sand (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%) were prepared at constant water-to-cement ratio of 0.40 and $490kg/m^3$ of cement content. Fresh SCC mixtures were tested by slump flow test, V-funnel flow time test, L-box height ratio, segregation resistance and rheological test using a rheometer. Compressive and flexural strengths of SCC mixtures were evaluated at 28 days. Regarding durability properties, total porosity, capillary water absorption and chloride-ion migration were studied at 180 days. For the two test modes in fresh state, the results indicated compatibility between slump flow/yield stress (${\tau}_0$) and V-funnel flow time/plastic viscosity (${\mu}$). Increasing the substitution level of limestone fines in SCC mixtures, contributes to the decrease of the slump flow and the yield stress. All SCC mixtures investigated achieved adequate filling, adequate passing ability and exhibit no segregation. Moreover, the inclusion of limestone fines as crushed sand substitution reduces the capillary water absorption, chloride-ion migration and consequently enhances the durability performance.

  • The conventional disposal methods of waste tires are harmful to the environment. Moreover, the recycling/reuse of waste tires in domestic and industrial applications is limited due to parent product's quality control and environmental concerns. Additionally, the recycling industry often prefers powdered rubber particles (<0.60 mm). However, the processing of waste tires yields both powdered and coarser (>0.60 mm) size fractions. Reprocessing of coarser rubber requires higher energy increasing the product cost. Therefore, the waste tire rubber (WTR) less favored by the recycling industry is encouraged for use in construction products as one of the environment-friendly disposal methods. In this study, WTR fiber >0.60 mm size fraction is collected from the industry and sorted into 0.60-1.18, 1.18-2.36-, and 2.36-4.75-mm sizes. The effects of different fiber size fractions are studied by incorporating it as fine aggregates at 10%, 20%, and 30% in the self-compacting rubberized concrete (SCRC). The experimental investigations are carried out by performing fresh and hardened state tests. As the fresh state tests, the slump-flow, T500, V-funnel, and L-box are performed. As the hardened state tests, the scanning electron microscope, compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength tests are conducted. Also, the water absorption, porosity, and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests are performed to measure durability. Furthermore, SCRC's energy absorption capacity is evaluated using the falling weight impact test. The statistical significance of content and size fraction of WTR fiber on SCRC is evaluated using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). As the general conclusion, implementation of various size fraction WTR fiber as fine aggregate showed potential for producing concrete for construction applications. Thus, use of WTR fiber in concrete is suggested for safe, and feasible waste tire disposal.

Adsorption Technology for Bacteria-Based Concrete Coating (박테리아 기반 콘크리트 코팅재 개발을 위한 박테리아 흡착기술 연구)

  • This study focused on the development of a fundamental technology for coating of concrete surface using slime produced from bacteria. To assign self-purification ability and improve durability performance of concrete, Rhodobater capsulatus that generates slime were selected and absorption technology for the selected bacteria was then examined. From the production of slime and growth activity of the bacteria, the optimum medium for Rhodobater capsulatus can be recommended as maltose. Furthermore, image analysis showed that high porous resin powder is more effective for absorption of the Rhodobater capsulatus than the other materials tested.

Supramolecular Micelle from Amphiphilic Mn(III)-porphyrin Derivatives as a Potential MRI Contrast Agent

  • Amphiphilic porphyrin derivatives have been synthesized and characterized by $^1H$ NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS. All porphyrin derivatives showed very high solubility to aqueous medium as well as hydrophobic organic solvent. The UV-vis absorption of the porphyrin derivatives showed significant broadness and decrease of maximum intensity of absorption in aqueous solution. SEM experiment showed the formation of spherical micellar structure. The $T_1$ relaxation time of aqueous medium was drastically decreased in the presence of Mn(III)-porphyrin derivative, indicating that the supramolecular micelle has strong possibility to use as a $T_1$ contrast agent.

Fabrication and Characteristics of DFB Laser with Absorption Grating (흡수격자를 갖는 DFB 레이저의 제작 및 특성)

  • 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ DFB with absorption grating of 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ InGaAsP layer was fabricated. This new type of DFB laser shows self-plusation for DC operation. At low level of injection the relation between the pulsation frequency and the injection current shows similar behavior with the relaxation oscillation of ordinary laser and at high level of injection the pulsation frequency decreases compared to the relaxation oscillation. Period doubling, period 3 and 4 were observed for AC modulation. In case of period doubling the waveform shows only one pulse within a period without any accompanying subsidiary pulses and the oscillation frequency was quite stable. The pulse widths as short as 58.5 ps was achieved with AC modulation. We propose the time division multiplexing application of this kind of DFB laser.
