  • Silver nanoparticles were loaded onto g-C3N4 (CN) with a nanoroll-type morphology (Ag/CN) synthesized using a co-polymerization method for highly selective conversion of toxic nitrobenzene to industrially-valuable aminobenzene. Scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images of Ag/CN revealed the generation of the nanoroll-type morphology of CN. Additionally, HRTEM analysis provided direct evidence of the generation of a Schottky barrier between Ag and CN in the Ag/CN nanohybrid. Photoluminescence analysis and photocurrent measurements suggested that the introduction of Ag into CN could minimize charge recombination rates, enhancing the mobility of electrons and holes to the surface of the photocatalyst. Compared to pristine CN, Ag/CN displayed much higher ability in the photocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to aminobenzene, underscoring the importance of Ag deposition on CN. The enhanced photocatalytic performance and photocurrent generation were primarily ascribed to the Schottky junction formed at the Ag/CN interface, greater visible-light absorption efficiency, and improved charge separation associated with the nanoroll morphology of CN. Ag would act as an electron sink/trapping center, enhancing the charge separation, and also serve as a good co-catalyst. Overall, the synergistic effects of these features of Ag/CN improved the photocatalytic conversion of nitrobenzene to aminobenzene.

  • Nanocomposite films were prepared by sol-gel synthesis from vanadium triisopropoxide with $poly((oxyethylene)_9$ methacrylate)-graft-poly(dimethyl siloxane), POEM-g-PDMS, producing in situ growth of vanadium oxide within the continuous ion-conducting POEM domains of micro phase-separated graft copolymer. The formation of vanadium oxide was confirmed by wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed the spatially-selective incorporation of vanadium oxide in the POEM domains. Upon the incorporation of vanadium oxide, the domain periodicity of the graft copolymer monotonously increased from 17.2 to 21.0 nm at a vanadium content 14 v%, above which it remained almost invariant. The selective interaction of vanadium oxide with POEM was further verified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and FT-IR spectroscopy. The nanocomposite films exhibited excellent mechanical properties $(l0^{-5}-10^{-7}dyne/cm^2)$, mostly due to the confinement of vanadium oxide in the POEM chains as well as the interfaces created by the microphase separation of the graft copolymer.

  • In this study, we developed simple process for ethanol concentration. We developed magnetically separable polyanilline nanofiber (PAMP) for selective ethanol adsorption. PAMP can adsorbed 80% of ethanol in the solution. After adsorption, the ethanol was recovered with simple magnetic separation and centrifugation process. After 10 times recycle of PAMP, the ethanol adsorption maintained 92% of its initial adsorption capacity. Using ethanol concentration process, the ethanol concentration increased up to 197.6 g/L from 46 g/L which was 4.3 folds increase.

  • In this study, we developed a new volume reduction technique for cesium contaminated soil by magnetic separation. Cs in soil is mainly adsorbed on clay which is the smallest particle constituent in the soil, especially on paramagnetic 2:1 type clay minerals which strongly adsorb and fix Cs. Thus selective separation of 2:1 type clay with a superconducting magnet could enable to reduce the volume of Cs contaminated soil. The 2:1 type clay particles exist in various particle sizes in the soil, which leads that magnetic force and Cs adsorption quantity depend on their particle size. Accordingly, we examined magnetic separation conditions for efficient separation of 2:1 type clay considering their particle size distribution. First, the separation rate of 2:1 type clay for each particle size was calculated by particle trajectory simulation, because magnetic separation rate largely depends on the objective size. According to the calculation, 73 and 89 % of 2:1 type clay could be separated at 2 and 7 T, respectively. Moreover we calculated dose reduction rate on the basis of the result of particle trajectory simulation. It was indicated that 17 and 51 % of dose reduction would be possible at 2 and 7 T, respectively. The difference of dose reduction rate at 2 T and 7 T was found to be separated a fine particle. It was shown that magnetic separation considering particle size distribution would contribute to the volume reduction of contaminated soil.

  • To apply to novel two-interconnected fluidized beds system for selective solid circulation, a solid separator and a solid circulation system were developed. The solid separation rate increased as the gas velocity through the solid injection nozzle, solid height, and diameter of solid injection nozzle increased. However, the effect of the fluidization velocity was negligible. Coarse($212{\sim}300{\mu}m$) and fine($63{\sim}106{\mu}m$) particles were separated using the solid separator and the solid separation rate was ranged from 66 to 453 g/min. The solid circulation rate increased as the gas velocity through the solid injection nozzle, solid height, and the number of solid intake holes increased. However, the effect of the fluidization velocity was negligible. Fine particle was circulated using the solid circulation system and the solid circulation rate was ranged from 65 to 390 g/min. We also proposed two interconnenced fluidized beds system for selective solid circulation equipped with the developed solid separator and the solid circulation system. Long-term operation of continuous solid circulation up to 20 hours has been performed to check feasibility of stable operation. The pressure drop profiles in two beds and the solid separation rate were maintained steadily, and therefore, we could conclude that solid circulation was smooth and stable.

  • This paper examines the feasibility of using periodically varying dielectric layers with dielectric constant ${\epsilon}_1$ and ${\epsilon}_2$ at millimeter wave frequency for implementing the frequency-selective reflectors that permit feed separation in large aperture reflecting antenna systems. For oblique incidence, it is found that the total reflection can be obtained at different frequencies for proper choices of ${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$ and the geometric parameters. In the frequency-selective reflector designed, the bandwidth for 90% reflection is always found to be much narrower than that for 90% transmission.

  • We report on the design of oil-water separators and the selection of materials for the effective application of highly selective membranes fabricated by commercial PET (polyester) fabrics. The waterproof ability of PET fabrics was optimized to improve the separation selectivity. The density of individual PET fabrics should be over $60g/m^2$, and the multi-layered structure is more favorable for the waterproof ability together with maintaining the removal efficiency. For the continuous adsorption and removal process, the rotating perforated cylinder was selected, and covered with membranes. Furthermore, more improved and stable removal efficiency was obtained by installing floating baffles which forces the oil content to move toward membranes.

  • Thallium-201 (201Tl) is a medical radioisotope which emits gamma rays when it decays and used in myocardial perfusion scans in single-photon emission tomography due to its similar properties to potassium. Currently, the Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences is the only institution producing 201Tl in Korea, and optimization of 201Tl production research is necessary to meet supply compared to domestic demand. To this end, technical analysis of plating target production and chemical separation methods essential for 201Tl production research is conducted. It deals with the process of generating and separating 201Tl radioisotope and target production, It can be generated through a nuclear reaction such as natHg(p,xn)201Tl, 201Hg(p,n)201Tl, natPb(p,xn)201Bi → 201Pb → 201Tl, 205Tl(p,5n)201Pb → 201Tl, and considering impure nuclide generated simultaneously with the use of proton beam energy of 35 MeV or less, it is intended to be produced using the 203Tl(p,3n)201Pb→201Tl nuclear reaction. In particular, the chemical separation of Tl is a very important element, and the chemical separation methods that can separate it is broadly divided into four types, including solid phase extraction, liquid-liquid, electrochemical, and ion exchange membrane separation. Some chemical separations require additional separation steps, such as methods using selective adsorption. Therefore, this technical report describes four chemical separation methods and seeks to separate high-purity 201Tl using a method without additional separation steps
