  • Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) method is one of Rapid Prototyping(RP) technologies. It is used to fabricate desirable part to sinter powder and stack the fabricated layer. To develop this SLS machine, it needs effective scanning path and the development of scanning device. This paper shows how to make fast scanning path with respect to scan spacing, laser beam size and scanning direction from 2-dimensional sliced file generated in commercial CAD/CAM software. Also, we develop the scanning device and its control algorithm to precisely follow the generated scanning path. Scanning path affects precision and total machining time of the final fabricated part. Sintering occurs using infrared laser which has high thermal energy. As a result, shrinkage and curling of the fabricated part occurs according to thermal distribution. Therefore, fast scanning path generation is needed to eliminate the factors of quality deterioration. It highly affects machining efficiency and prevents shrinkage and curling by relatively lessening the thermal distribution of the surface of sintering layer. To generate this fast scanning path, adaptive path generation is needed with respect to the shape of each layer, and not simply x, y scanning, but the scanning of arbitrary direction must be enabled. This paper addresses path generation method to focus on fast scanning, and development of scanning system and control algorithm to precisely follow generated path.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to present the clinical applicability of restorations fabricated by a new method, by comparing the bond strength of between ceramic powder with different coefficient of thermal expansion and alloys fabricated by Selective laser sintering (SLS). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifty Co-Cr alloy specimens ($25.0{\times}3.0{\times}0.5mm$) were prepared by SLS and fired with the ceramic ($8.0{\times}3.0{\times}0.5mm$) (ISO 9693:1999). For comparison, ceramics with different coefficient of thermal expansion were used. The bond strength was measured by three-point bending testing and surfaces were observed with FE-SEM. Results were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The mean values of Duceram Kiss ($61.18{\pm}6.86MPa$), Vita VM13 ($60.30{\pm}7.14MPa$), Ceramco 3 ($58.87{\pm}5.33MPa$), Noritake EX-3 ($55.86{\pm}7.53MPa$), and Vintage MP ($55.15{\pm}7.53MPa$) were found. No significant difference was observed between the bond strengths of the various metal-ceramics. The surfaces of the specimens possessed minute gaps between the additive manufactured layers. CONCLUSION. All the five powders have bond strengths higher than the required 25 MPa minimum (ISO 9693); therefore, various powders can be applied to metal structures fabricated by SLS.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the metal and the bond strength in metal-ceramic restorations produced by selective laser sintering (SLS) and by conventional casting (CAST). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Non-precious alloy (StarLoy C, DeguDent, Hanau, Germany) was used in CAST group and metal powder (SP2, EOS GmbH, Munich, Germany) in SLS group. Metal specimens in the form of sheets ($25.0{\times}3.0{\times}0.5mm$) were produced in accordance with ISO 9693:1999 standards (n=30). To measure the bond strength, ceramic was fired on a metal specimen and then three-point bending test was performed. In addition, the metal fracture strength was measured by continuing the application of the load. The values were statistically analyzed by performing independent t-tests (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The mean bond strength of the SLS group (50.60 MPa) was higher than that of the CAST group (46.29 MPa), but there was no statistically significant difference. The metal fracture strength of the SLS group (1087.2 MPa) was lower than that of the CAST group (2399.1 MPa), and this difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSION. In conclusion the balling phenomenon and the gap formation of the SLS process may increase the metal-ceramic bond strength.

  • This Paper Proposes the test pieces of X, Y and Z axes to compensate the shape distortion of Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) parts resulting from the phase change during the sintering process. In no case of the proposed compensation test pieces of X, Y axes the accurate rates of shrinkage can be measured with the reduction of curling which is obtained from adjustment of build orientation and the formula used to get scale factors are proposed with the shrinkage rates of them. The scale factors of X, Y and Z axes are generated by building up proposed compensation test pieces. The generated scale iactors are required to satisfy the dimensional accuracy even if there are changes of the build position and the size of SLS parts in the build chamber. For this reason, it is proposed that the build positions and the size be considered to be noise factors against the compensation test pieces and a method is also proposed that scale factors be selected to robustly maintain the dimensional accuracy of SLS parts under the actual operating conditions with the application of the Taguchi Method.

  • Additive manufacturing process technology, known as the 3D printing process, is expanding its utilization from simple model realization to commercialized part production based on continuous material development. Recently, research and development have been actively carried out to fabricate lightweight and high-strength parts using polymers, such as polyamide (polyamide), which is a high-strength engineering plastic material. In this study, the Izod impact characteristics were analyzed for polyamide 12 (PA12) materials. For the specimen production, selective laser sintering process technology, which has excellent mechanical properties of finished products, was applied. In addition, PA12 and glass bead reinforced PA12 materials were produced. The specimens were classified according to the production direction on the production platform, and each specimen was subjected to an Izod test at test temperatures of $-25^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$. As a result, the impact strength of PA12 and glass bead-reinforced PA12 of vertical direction specimens were 48.8% and 16.3% lower than those of the parallel specimens at a $25^{\circ}C$ test temperature and the impact strength of parallel specimens was improved by 46.5% and 20.4% at a test temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ compared to that at $-25^{\circ}C$.

  • The use of 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing) technology has expanded from initial model production to the mass production of parts in the industrial field based on the continuous research and development of materials and process technology. As a representative polymer material for 3D printing, the polyamide-based material, which is one of the high-strength engineering plastics, is used mainly for manufacturing parts for automobiles because of its light weight and durability. In this study, the specimens were fabricated using Selective Laser Sintering, which has excellent mechanical properties, and the flexural characteristics were analyzed according to the temperature of the two types of polyamide 12 and glass bead reinforced PA12 materials. The test specimens were prepared in the directions of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ based on the work platform, and then subjected to a flexural test in three test temperature environments of $-25^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$. As a result, PA12 had the maximum flexural strength in the direction of $90^{\circ}$ at $-25^{\circ}C$ and $0^{\circ}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. The glass bead-reinforced PA12 exhibited maximum flexural strength values at all test temperatures in the $0^{\circ}$ fabrication direction. The tendency of the flexural strength changes of the two materials was different due to the influence of the plane direction of the lamination layer depending on the type of stress generated in the bending test.

  • A new low melting inorganic binder, monoclinic $HBO_2$, has been developed for Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) of alumina powder by dehydration process of boron oxide powder in a vacuum oven at $120^{\circ}C$. It led to better green SLS parts and higher bend strength far green and fired parts compared to other inorganic binders such as aluminum and ammmonium phosphate. This appeared to be due to its low viscosity and better wettability of the alumina particle surface. A low density single phase ceramic, aluminum borate ($Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$), and multiphase ceramic composites, $A_{12}O_3-A_{14}B_2O_9$, were successfully developed by laser processing of alumina-monoclinic $HBO_2$ powder blends followed by post-thermal processing; both $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ and $A_{14}B_2O_9$ have whisker-like grains. The physical and mechanical properties of these SLS-processed ceramic parts were correlated to the materials and processing parameters. Further densification of the $A_{12}O_3-A_{14}B_2O_9$ ceramic composites was carried out by infiltration of colloidal silica, and chromic acid into these porous SLS parts followed by heat-treatment at high temperature ($1600^{\circ}C$). The densities obtained after infiltration and subsequent firing were between 75 and 80% of the theoretical densities. The bend strengths are between 15 and 33 MPa.
