  • Acoustic noise has become an increasingly important issue, especially in the industrial environment. Nowadays home and office are not exceptional, mainly due to the increase in the usage of machinery. Active Noise Control(ANC) becomes efficiently an available tool for the noise suppression with rapid advances of solid state electronics. In this study an ANC system is developed for audio headphone to work as a noise protector, so called an ear-muff. The system is developed to kill a certain frequency band noises selectively which is purposed to suppress only the dominant ambient noise such that normal numan conversation is not disturbed with wearing the ear-muff. For the purpose, an ANC design strategy is suggested and implemented with an analogue control circuit. The performance is evaluated by frequency response test, which shows well consistence with theoretical one. The results are so satisfactory that noise of 640 Hz, which is aimed to suppress, is reduced by 20db without significant distortion in other frequency band.

  • This paper presents the integrated speech enhancement system for hands-free mobile communication. The proposed integrated system incorporates both acoustic echo cancellation and engine noise reduction device to provide signal enhancement of desired speech signal from the echoed plus noisy environments. To implement the system, a delayless subband adaptive structure is used for acoustic echo cancellation operation. The NLMS based adaptive noise canceller then applied to the residual echo removed noisy signal to achieve the selective engine noise attenuation in dominant frequency component. Two sets of computer simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system; one for the fixed acoustical environment condition, the other for the robustness of the system in which, more realistic situation, the acoustic transmission environment change. Simulation results confirm the system performance of 20-25dB ERLE in acoustic echo cancellation and 9-19 dB engine noise attenuation in dominant frequency component for both cases.

  • The active noise control (ANC) technique attenuates acoustic noise in a flexible and effective way. Traditional ANC design aims to minimize the residual noise energy, which is indiscriminative in the frequency domain. However, human hearing perception exhibits selective sensitivity for different frequency ranges. In this paper, we aim to improve the noise attenuation performance in perceptual perspective by incorporating noise weighting into ANC design. We also introduce psychoacoustic analysis to evaluate the sound quality of the residual noise by using a predictive pleasantness model, which combines four psychoacoustic parameters: loudness, sharpness, roughness, and tonality. Simulations on synthetic random noise and realistic noise show that our method improves the sound quality and that ITU-R 468 noise weighting even performs better than A-weighting.

  • Attenuation coefficients of medical ultrasound not only reflect the pathological information of tissues scanned but also provide the quantitative information to compensate the decay of backscattered signals for other medical ultrasound parameters. Based on the frequency-selective attenuation property of human tissues, attenuation estimation methods in spectral domain have difficulties for real-time implementation due to the complexicity while estimation methods in time domain do not achieve the compensation for the diffraction effect effectively. In this paper, we propose the modified VSA method, which compensates the diffraction with reference phantom in time domain, using adaptive bandpass filters with decreasing center frequencies along depths. The adaptive bandpass filtering technique minimizes the distortion of relative echogenicity of wideband transmit pulses and maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio due to the random scattering, especially at deeper depths. Since the filtering center frequencies change according to the accumulated attenuation, the proposed algorithm improves estimation accuracy and precision comparing to the fixed filtering method. Computer simulation and experimental results using tissue-mimicking phantoms demonstrate that the distortion of relative echogenicity is decreased at deeper depths, and the accuracy of attenuation estimation is improved by 5.1% and the standard deviation is decreased by 46.9% for the entire scan depth.

  • PLC (Power Line Communication) is the communication method using the existing power line installed in houses and offices to convert and transmit high frequency communication signal from tens of KHz to tens of MHz, and receive the filtered signal using high frequency filter The advantage of PLC is that PLC uses the existing power line installed in houses and offices so it does not require separate power line. Easy and convenient access using electric outlets is another advantage of PLC. However, PLC has some disadvantages such as limited transmission power, high load interference and noise, variable signal attenuation, characteristic of impedance, and selective possibility of frequency property. We designed the boiler temperature control system unit by using the PLC modem. We can avoid unnecessary heating of separate temperature control unit, and save the cost accordingly control stability of the proposed system is proven through the experiment.

After conducting experiments with those two systems, it was possible to control stably. • A power line modem(PLM) which transfers data safely through power lines in houses or small offices is considered. When a power line is used for communications, transmitted signals could be affected by the channel characteristics such as frequency-selective fading, interference, and time-varying attenuation. In order to overcome these impairments, a direct sequence(DS) technique which is well known as an effective instrument against a variety of interferences and hostile channel properties is employed. Using a DS technique, however, requires more circuits such as PN code generator circuits, code modification circuits, and complicated synchronization circuits, and it also results in substantial acquisition delay. In this paper, some of these circuits are implemented via software programmed in the system controller, and the complicated synchronization circuits are replaced by simple circuits utilizing a 60 Hz power signal for synchronization. The synchronization ciruits used in this paper virtually eliminate the substantial acquisition delay, and is also designed to free influence of 60 Hz zero crossing jitters which reside in a power signal. As a result, a PLM using a DS technique is realized in the form of wall-socket plug, and the PLM hardware would be very much simplified.
