The purpose of the present study is to find out and analyze the degree of population concentration of 10 selected cities. The data used for the present study were derived from the Government publications including the population and Housing Census Reports from 1966 through 1980 and the Korea Urbanic Yearbooks from 1969 through 1981. The major findings of the study were summarized as follows: The data revealed that changes of population size were more rapidly proceeded in Seoul than any other city and regarding to population composition, these selected cities had more male population than female population. The proportion of the productive age group of these selected cities were found to be higher than that of whole country each year, especially the proportion 20∼24 aged group was higher in 1980 than any other year. The number of net migrants in these cities during last 20 years, 1960∼80 was 910, 656 as Seoul obtained the largest net migrants and among the selected cities, Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon and Jeonju had a big change in volume of net migration population, especially in 30∼39 aged group in 1980. According to Gini Concentration Ratio and Index of Concentration, the population concentration was the highest in 1980 and the population concentration was intensively accelerated during 1966∼ 1970.
These studies were conducted to investigate development of chemical resistance in two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) trough single selection for a given period of time with five acaricides including carbophenothion and ethion of organo-phosphate compound, dicofol of organo-chlorine compound, cyhexatin of organo-tin compound, biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid compound; and to examine cross-resistance among the acaricides to the selected populations. The development of chemical resistance of two-spotted spider mite was greatly varied under single selection of the each five acaricides. The carbophenothion- and the ethion-populations at the 22nd and the 24th selected generations showed 156- and 64.1-fold resistant levels, respectively, as compared with the susceptible population. However, the dicofol population at the 28th selected generation exhibited 39.7-fold resistant level, and the biphenthrin population at the 24th selected generation revealed 25.2-fold resistant level, while the cyhexatin population at the 20th selected generation showed 13-fold resistant level. The carbophenothion-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion, and low cross-resistance to dicofol and biphenthrin. The ethion-selected population revealed also high cross-resistance to carbophenothion. The dicofol-or the biphenthrin-selected populations, however, exhibited moderate cross-resistance to carbophenothion and ethion. Meantime, the cyhexatin-selected population showed high cross-resistance to ethion and carbophenothion.
These studies were conducted to investigate the development of chemical resistance in two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) through alternate selection for a given period of time with four acaricides including ethion of organophophours compound, dicofol of organo-chlorine compound, cyhexatin of organo-tin compound, and biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid compound; and to examine multiple-resistance among the acaricides to the selected populations. The development levels of chemical resistance in the two-spotted spider mite were greatly varied under alternate selection with the different chemical-group combination of four acaricides. Resistant levels of the ethion/dicofol-selected population at 13th-13th generation showed 49.4-fold resistance to ethion and 18.1-fold to dicofol; the ethion/cyhexatin-selected population at 9th-9th generation exhibited 28.1-fold to ethion and 5-fold to cyhexatin; the ethion/biphenthrin-selectd population at 10th-10th generation revealed 39.8-fold to ethion and 19.2-fold to biphenthrin. However, the dicofol/cyhexatin-selected population at 9th-9th generation showed 11.3-fold to dicofol and 4.9-fold to cyhexatin, and the dicofol/biphenthrin-selected population at 12th-12th generation exhibited 11.2-fold to dicofol and 9.4- fold to biphenthrin, while the cyhexatin/biphenthrin-selected population at 9th-9th generation revealed 3.7-fold to cyhexatin and 7.7-fold to biphenthrin. In case of alternate selection, the ehtion/dicofol-selected population revealed moderate multiple-resistance level to biphenthrin. The ethion/cyhexatin-selected and the ethion/biphenthrin-selected populations showed low mutiple-resistance level to biphenthrin and dicofol, respectively. However, the dicofol/cyhexatin-selected, the dicofol/biphenthrin-selected and the cyhexatin/biphenthrin-selected populations exhibited high multiple-resistance level to ethion.
Objective: Few studies have genetically monitored chickens over time, and no research has been conducted on ducks. To ensure the sustainable management of key duck breeds, we used microsatellite markers to monitor Brown Tsaiya ducks over time genetically. Methods: The second, fourth, sixth to eighth generations of the Brown Tsaiya duck selected for feeding efficiency and control lines were included in this study to investigate the genetic variations, effective population size, population structure and the differentiation between populations over time with 11 microsatellite markers derived from Brown Tsaiya duck. Results: The results showed there were a slight decrease in the genetic variations and an increase in within-population inbreeding coefficient (FIS) in both lines, but no consistent increase in FIS was observed in each line. The effective population size in the second and eighth generations was 27.2 for the selected line and 23.9 for the control line. The change in allele richness showed a downward trend over time, and the selected line was slightly lower than the control line in each generation. The number of private alleles (Np) in the selected line were higher than in the control line. Moderate differentiation was observed between the second and eighth generations in the selected line (FST = 0.0510) and the control line (FST = 0.0606). Overall, differentiation tended to increase with each generation, but genetic variation and structure did not change considerably after six generations in the two lines. Conclusion: This study provides a reference for poultry conservation and helps to implement cross-generation genetic monitoring and breeding plans in other duck breeds or lines to promote sustainable management.
These studies were carried out to compare toxicological test methods of two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch,; and to investigate relationship between in vivo resistant level of highly acaricide-selected population, and in vitro insensitivity of the AChE in the same population to carbophenothion and ethion. The slide dip method (CV = 8.7%) was of more accuracy and suitability than that of the leaf dip method(CV=12.2%) and leaf disc method (CV= 13.6 %) in determination of the resistant levels of twospotted spider mite to acaricides. The slide dip method also had the advantages of simple treatment with different populations on a slide at the same time, standardization of post-treatement conditions and living plants exclud¬ed from the test. Even though the topical application method(CV =8.1 %) showed high accuracy, it had the demerits of the much time consuming, need of expensive equipment and difficulty of test manipulation. For a limited time, the 22nd successive carbophenothion-selected population of two-spotted spider mite showed 156- and 128-fold resistant levels to carbophenothion and ethion(both alPs), respectively. However, the 24th successive ethion-selected population revealed 64.1- and 65-fold resistant levels to ethion and carbophenothion, respectively. In the inhibition of AChE activity, the carbophenothion-selected population showed 3.3- and 2.7-fold insensitivity in AChE activity to carbophenothion and ethion, respectively. Likewise, the ethion -selected population exhibited 3- and 2.6-fold insensitivity in AChE activity to carbophenothion and ethion, respectively, as compared with that of susceptible population. As a result, a good relation was recognized between in vivo resistance to organophosphorous acaricides and in vitro insensitivity of the AChE to corresponding inhibitors.
The purpose of this study is to develop rural population model adapting cohort survival method with sift-share effects. Administrative district in this study is below Myun: about 2,000 population. Population data of rural area in 1990, 1995, and 2000 by age cohort were selected for applying developed model. Damping coefficient from population data was calculated as 7% and results applying this coefficient in rural population data below the error from 12% to 1.06%. In detail, most of cohorts fitted with developed model except from 15 to 29 age groups. Application result of small population area; DaesulMyun revealed that main factor of population change is not natural change but migration.
This research examines the power of bootstrap two-sample test, and compares it with the powers of two-sample t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, through simulation. For simulation work, a positively skewed and heavy tailed distribution was selected as a population distribution, the chi-square distributions with three degrees of freedom, χ23. For two independent samples, the fist sample was selected from χ23. The second sample was selected independently from the same χ23 as the first sample, and calculated d+ax for each sampled value x, a randomly selected value from χ23. The d in d+ax has from 0 to 5 by 0.5 interval, and the a has from 1.0 to 1.5 by 0.1 interval. The powers of three methods were evaluated for the sample sizes 10,20,30,40,50. The null hypothesis was the two population medians being equal for Bootstrap two-sample test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, and the two population means being equal for the two-sample t-test. The powers were obtained using r program language; wilcox.test() in r base package for Wilcoxon rank sum test, t.test() in r base package for the two-sample t-test, boot.two.bca() in r wBoot pacakge for the bootstrap two-sample test. Simulation results show that the power of Wilcoxon rank sum test is the best for all 330 (n,a,d) combinations and the power of two-sample t-test comes next, and the power of bootstrap two-sample comes last. As the results, it can be recommended to use the classic inference methods if there are widely accepted and used methods, in terms of time, costs, sometimes power.
The purpose of the paper is to examine the nature of population distribution during the past 25 years; to evaluate effect of population redistribution policies which have been adopted by the government; and to suggest desirable future policy directions. The distinctive features of population distribution during the period of 196O~85 can be summarized as progress of rapid urbanization, decrease of absolute number of rural population and heavy concentration of population in the Seoul metropolitan area which have resulted in population maldistribution among regions. The problem of population concentration in the selected one or two large urban centers was first recognized by the government as early as in 1964. Since then numerous policy measures have been adopted to reduce the population concentration into the Seoul metropolitan area and thus to guide a sound population redistribution among regions. The overall assessment of various policies on population redistribution, however, revealed that the effect of the policy efforts has not been great as they originally anticipated. Various reasons can be cited for the failure of the past policies. Among them the followings were frequently mentioned; lack of integration among policy measures; weak linkage between relocation and accommodation; and non-existence of single authority for overall implementation of the polices. Based on the past experiences the followings are suggested in pursuing future policies. First, the short-term objective or target should be clearly defined. Second, policy measures have to be designed to go with rather than against market forces. Third, indirect incentives or aids are more effective than direct controls or regulations. Fourth, local participation has to be secured in every phase of policy formulation and implementation.
Breeding efficiency was investigated to reveal crucial factors for constructing effective breeding system with subdivided populations under equal genetic level. Simulation study of selection experiment was performed for 20 generations with 20 replications each, comparing average breeding values and inbreeding coefficients between the two breeding systems; single population scheme and two population scheme, each of which had the same genetic parameters. Genetic correlations (-0.5 to 0.5) were assumed to be caused only by pleiotropic effect of a gene. Phenotypes of the two traits generated by polygenic effect with additive 36 loci and residuals distributed normally were selected by two traits selection index procedure. Comparing between the single population scheme and the two population scheme, the single population scheme showed higher genetic gain with lower inbreeding coefficient. This result was confirmed particularly for the situation of high selection intensity, high heritability and high degree of unevenness for economic weight. Genetic correlations in the single population scheme were significantly lower than the two population scheme when initial genetic correlation was negative. When terminal crossbreeding for the two population scheme is taken into account, superiority of the two population scheme was suggested. The terminal crossbreeding was effective under the situation of long term selection, existence of moderate inbreeding depression and use of less extreme economic weight.
Objective: A genomic region associated with a particular phenotype is called quantitative trait loci (QTL). To detect the optimal F2 population size associated with QTLs in native chicken, we performed a simulation study on F2 population derived from crosses between two different breeds. Methods: A total of 15 males and 150 females were randomly selected from the last generation of each F1 population which was composed of different breed to create two different F2 populations. The progenies produced from these selected individuals were simulated for six more generations. Their marker genotypes were simulated with a density of 50K at three different heritability levels for the traits such as 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5. Our study compared 100, 500, 1,000 reference population (RP) groups to each other with three different heritability levels. And a total of 35 QTLs were used, and their locations were randomly created. Results: With a RP size of 100, no QTL was detected to satisfy Bonferroni value at three different heritability levels. In a RP size of 500, two QTLs were detected when the heritability was 0.5. With a RP size of 1,000, 0.1 heritability was detected only one QTL, and 0.5 heritability detected five QTLs. To sum up, RP size and heritability play a key role in detecting QTLs in a QTL study. The larger RP size and greater heritability value, the higher the probability of detection of QTLs. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the use of a large RP and heritability can improve QTL detection in an F2 chicken population.
