  • The objective of this study is to analysis the seismic response of 200m spanned honeycomb lattice domes under horizontal and up-down ground motion of El Centro earthquake. For the analysis of seismic response of the honeycomb lattice domes by rise/span ratio, the time history analysis is used for the estimation of the dynamic response. The low rise lattice dome is less deformed and less stressed than the high rise lattice dome for the earthquake ground motion. The 3-dimensional earthquake response is not significantly different the dynamic response of one directional ground motion. The earthquake response of domes with LRB isolation system is significantly reduced for the asymmetric vertical deformation and the horizontal and vertical accelerations.

  • The friction pendulum type seismic isolation system (FPS) using the PTFE based materials has been developed to provide a simple and effective way to achieve earthquake resistance for buildings. PTFE matrials are soft and apt to be deformed easily after a few working cycles. Instead of the usual PTFE materials, the Polyimide material was used in this research. Polyimide is harder than PTFE, but has smaller friction coefficient and longer duration fur usage. In this paper, various kinds of PTFE materials were tested to define the frictional characteristics compared with the Polyimide material. FPS was manufactured with fine surface roughness and used with Polyimide material to show the seismic isolation efficiency, and life duration when applied to a rigid mass model and a 5 stole frame model.

  • The friction pendulum system(FPS) is a kind of seismic isolation devices for isolating structures from an earthquake. To analyze the effect of friction materials used in the friction pendulum system, fragility analysis of LNG tank with seismic isolation system was conducted. In this study, titanium dioxide($TiO_2$) nanoparticles were incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) matrix to produce friction materials attached to the FPS. The base moment of the concrete outer tank and the acceleration of the structure were evaluated from different mixing ratios of constituents for the friction materials. The seismic fragility curves were developed based on two types of limit state. It is confirmed that evaluation of combined fragility curves with several limit states can be applied to select the optimum friction material satisfying the required performance of the FPS for various infrastructure.

  • To study the effectiveness of sliding isolation in a CRLSS (concrete rectangular liquid-storage structure) and develop a reasonable limiting-device method, dynamic responses of non-isolation, sliding isolation with spring limiting-devices and sliding isolation with steel bar limiting-devices are comparatively studied by shaking table test. The seismic response reduction advantage of sliding isolation for concrete liquid-storage structures is discussed, and the effect of the limiting-device type on system dynamic responses is analyzed. The results show that the dynamic responses of sliding isolation CRLSS with steel bar-limiting devices are significantly smaller than that of sliding isolation CRLSS with spring-limiting devices. The structure acceleration and liquid sloshing wave height are greatly influenced by spring-limiting devices. The acceleration of the structure in this case is close to or greater than that of a non-isolated structure. Liquid sloshing shows stronger nonlinear characteristics. On the other hand, sliding isolation with steel bar-limiting devices has a good control effect on the structural dynamic response and the liquid sloshing height simultaneously. Thus, a limiting device is an important factor affecting the seismic response reduction effect of sliding isolation. To take full advantage of sliding isolation in a concrete liquid-storage structure, a reasonable design of the limiting device is particularly important.

  • A large number of isolation systems are designed without considering the non-uniform friction distribution in space. In order to analyze the effects of non-uniform friction distribution on the structural response of isolation system, this paper presented a simplified rolling-damper-spring isolation system and analyzed the structural responses under earthquakes. The numerical results indicate that the calculation errors related to the peak values of structural acceleration, relative displacement and residual displacement are sequentially growing because of the ignorance of non-uniform friction distribution. However, the influence rule may be weakened by the spring and damper actions, and the unreasonable spring constant may lead to the sympathetic vibration of isolation system. In the case when the friction variability is large and the damper action is little, the non-uniform friction distribution should be taken into consideration during the calculation process of the peak values of structural acceleration and relative displacement. The non-uniform friction distribution should be taken into full consideration regardless of friction variability degree in calculating the residual displacement of isolation system.

  • To solve the seismic response problem of a vertical floating roof tank with base isolation, the floating roof is assumed to experience homogeneous rigid circular plate vibration, where the wave height of the vibration is linearly distributed along the radius, starting from the theory of fluid velocity potential; the potential function of the liquid movement and the corresponding theoretical expression of the base shear, overturning the moment, are then established. According to the equivalent principle of the shear and moment, a simplified mechanical model of a base isolation tank with a swinging effect is established, along with a motion equation of a vertical storage tank isolation system that considers the swinging effect based on the energy principle. At the same time, taking a 150,000 m 3 large-scale storage tank as an example, a numerical analysis of the dampening effect was conducted using a vibration mode decomposition response spectrum method, and a comparative analysis with a simplified mechanical model with no swinging effect was applied.

  • The enlargement of interest in base isolators as an earthquake-proof design strategy has dramatically accelerated experimental studies of elastomeric bearings worldwide. In this paper, a new base isolator concept that is a hybrid system of rubber bearings is proposed. Uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial shaking table tests are also performed to study the seismic behavior of a 0.4-scale three-story isolated steel structure in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan. Experimental results demonstrate that structures with a hybrid system of rubber bearings composed of stirruped rubber bearings and laminated rubber bearings can actually decrease the seismic responses of the superstructure. It has been proved through the shaking table tests that the proposed hybrid system of rubber bearings is a very promising tool to enhance the seismic resistance of structures. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the proposed analytical model in this paper can predict the mechanical behavior of the hybrid system of rubber bearings and seismic responses of the base-isolated structures.

  • Seismic isolation has been considered and utilized in various industries as a way to prevent huge damage on to structures by large earthquakes in various industries. The laminated Laminated rubber bearings is are most frequently used in seismic isolation systems. The structural Structural safety could not be assured unless the performance of the rubber bearing is not guaranteed for the life time of the structure under the consideration that the bearing is a critical structural member to sustain vertical loads in the seismically isolated structure. However, there are few studies on the deterioration problems of rubber bearings during their service life. The long term performance of the rubber bearings was not considered in past designs of seismically isolated structures. This study evaluates the long term performance and creep characteristics of laminated natural rubber bearings that are used in seismically isolated buildings. For the this study, a set of accelerated thermal aging tests and creep tests are were performed on real specimens. The experimental results show that the natural rubber bearings would have a stable change rate of change for durability under severe environmental conditions for a long time.

  • Seismic isolation is one of the most widely implemented and accepted seismic protection systems to limit or avoid damages from unforeseeable earthquakes. As an energy absorption device, however, the supplemental lead itself tends to pollute the environment. Consequently, it is predicted that the use of lead would be controlled. Considering the pollution caused by lead, several researchers are interested in the viability of using steel in place of lead. In this study, first, based on the results of a non-linear finite element analysis, the excellent deformation capacity of a very tough steel damper was demonstrated by comparing it with that of the SS400 damper and determining the effects of main parameters (the aspect ratio, thickness, and width) on the deformation capacity. Second, an optimum shape and design equation for a U-shaped damper with an opening based on stress distribution was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the effect of improving seismic performance by applying the details of seismic reinforcement to the reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details while maintaining the original opening shape. In this study, based on CF specimens with specific seismic details, a total of four full scale specimens were designed and fabricated. The main variables are the width and spacing of steel dampers installed in the upper and lower parts of seismic reinforcement details, and the presence or absence of torsion springs installed in the hinges. As a result of the test, it was evaluated to be helpful for seismic retrofit and opening isolation of steel dampers installed at the upper and lower parts of the seismic reinforcement details and torsion springs installed at the joints. In particular, CFR2S specimens with torsion springs showed the best performance in terms of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity with increasing displacement angle.
