  • This thesis studied effect of zoning on seepage flow in concrete faced gravel-fill dam (CFGD) designed to have selected main rockfill or gravel-fill zone, Zone 3Bs with higher permeability to enhance the safety against accidental water infiltration into the dam. For this purpose, centrifuge model tests with two cases, with and without Zone 3Bs, were performed in order to investigate the necessity and the function of Zone 3Bs. Model dams were made by soil samples with modified coefficients of permeability and concrete faced slab was simulated with aluminum alloy. Water infiltration was simulated by rising water table over cracks on the facing. Behaviors of model dams were measured by LVDTs, strain gages, pore water pressures and cameras. Form the results of centrifuge tests, it was found out that the Zone 3Bs acts as a protection of main gravel-fill zone by inducing flow paths for infiltrated water into it as well as by draining off the infiltrated water out of the dam in a short time.

  • Correlation among different factors must be considered for selection of influencing factors in safety monitoring of high dam including positive correlation of variables. Therefore, a new factor selection method was constructed based on Copula entropy and mutual information theory, which was deduced and optimized. Considering the small sample size in high dam monitoring and distribution of daily monitoring samples, a computing method that avoids causality of structure as much as possible is needed. The two-dimensional normal information diffusion and fuzzy reasoning of pattern recognition field are based on the weight theory, which avoids complicated causes of the studying structure. Hence, it is used to dam safety monitoring field and simplified, which increases sample information appropriately. Next, a complete system integrating high dam monitoring and uncertainty prediction method was established by combining Copula entropy theory and information diffusion theory. Finally, the proposed method was applied in seepage monitoring of Nuozhadu clay core-wall rockfill dam. Its selection of influencing factors and processing of sample data were compared with different models. Results demonstrated that the proposed method increases the prediction accuracy to some extent.

  • Present study concerns the safety evaluation of SefidRud dam's block No. 18 regarding probable crack propagation in the foundation gallery under a MCE record. Accordingly, a 3D finite element model of the block in companion with the reservoir and the foundation is modeled. All the associated thermal and structural parameters are derived via calibration with the records of thermometers and pendulums installed inside the dam body. The origination of the cracks and their whereabouts are determined by primary thermal and static analyses and through a linear dynamic analysis the potential failure zone and their extent and level are studied. The foundation gallery is the most probable zone among the other intensive tensile stress area to compromise the dam stability. Therefore, the nonlinear analysis of this risky region is inevitable. The results depict the permissible expansion of the cracks inside the gallery even under another future earthquake in MCE level. As a consequence, the general dam performance is assessed safe in spite of the seepage flow rate growth from the gallery fractures.

  • Recently the centrifuge test has been used increasingly to clarify a problem of seepage in dam. However, one of the most difficult challenges in the testing is to conform permeability properties of model ground to the prototype. In order to resolve the problem, a few solutions, such as an increase of pore water viscosity and a regulation of water permeability, are suggested. Although the use of prototype materials is principles if a model test is carried out, the materials of similarity gradation is used in the centrifuge model test because of the nature of the model test for dam. Therefore, we choose the latter method for model ground materials. In this study, the permeability properties of soil-bentonite mixtures are studied through the permeation test using triaxial compaction test apparatus.

  • Shear modulus (or rigidity) of dam material is an important parameter which can be directly associated with the deformation of dam. Seepage or leakage of water can cause the defects or cracks of dam body. The existence of cracks and rigidity of dam body are decisive information for the estimation of dam safety. Rigidity of material is mainly determined from S-wave velocity and the defects of dam body can be detected by seismic reflection survey. Therefore, seismic reflection survey will be a desirable method which can give a solution about dam safety problem. Among various physical properties of dam body, S-wave velocity is the most important information but it is not easy to get the information. In this study, diverse measuring techniques of S-wave reflection survey were attempted to get the information about S-wave velocity of dam body. Ultimately, S-wave velocity could be estimated by the analysis of SH reflection events which can be easily observed in shot gather data obtained from SH measuring technique. Meanwhile, P-wave reflection survey was also performed at the same profile. P-beam radiation technique which can reduce the surface waves and reinforce the P-wave reflection events was applied for giving a help to analyse P-wave velocity. In the end, P-and S-wave velocity, Vs/Vp, Poisson's ratio distribution of the vertical section under the profile could be acquired.

  • In this paper, the DDA method with a new hydro-mechanical algorithm is used to study the effect of rock discontinuities on uplift and seepage in concrete gravity dam foundations. This paper presents an alternative method of predicting uplift and seepage at the base of concrete gravity dams. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to study the importance of several parameters on dam stability such as the orientation, spacing, and location of discontinuities. The study shows that joint water flow and adverse geological conditions could result in unusual uplift at the base of concrete gravity dams, well in excess of what is predicted with the classical linear or hi-linear pressure assumption. It is shown that, in general, the DDA program with the hydro-mechanical algorithm can be used as a practical tool in the design of gravity dams built on fractured rock masses.

  • In the recent years, due to long-lasting heavy rainfall events, a large number of landslides have been observed in the mountainous area of the world. Such landslides can also form a dam as it blocks the course of a river, which may burst and cause a catastrophic flood. Numerical analysis of landslide dam formation is rarely available, while laboratory experimental studies often use assumed shape to analyze the landslide dam failure and flood hydraulics in downstream. In this study, both experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to investigate the formation of landslide dam. Two case laboratory experiments were conducted in two flumes simultaneously. The first flume (2.0 m 0.6 m 0.5 m) was set at $22^{\circ}$ and $27^{\circ}$ slope to generate the landslide using rainfall intensity of 70.0 mm/hr. On the other hand, the second flume (1.5 m 0.25 m 0.3 m) was set perpendicularly at the downstream end of the first flume to receive the landslide mass forming landslide dam. The formation of landslide dam was observed at $15^{\circ}$ slope of the second flume. The whole processes including the landslide initiation and movement of the landslide mass into the second channel was captured by three digital cameras. In numerical analysis, a two-dimensional (2D) seepage flow model, a 2D slope stability model (Spencer method) and a 2D landslide dam-geometry evaluation model were coupled as a single unit. This developed model can determine the landslide occurrence time, the failure mass and the geometry of landslide dam deposited in the second channel. The data obtained from numerical simulation results has good agreement with the experimental measurements.
