  • The seedlings of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher), which were cuttings, plug seedling (PS), crown bud before sprouting (CBBS), crown bud after sprouting (CBAS), and divided seedling after budding (DSAB) were planted at 70$\times$50 cm planting distance on ridge; that was interow spacingintrarow spacing, and about 28,500$\pm$71 plants/ha. CBBS didn't need work and equipment to raise seedlings. PS and DSAB grew taller to 140.5 and 143.3cm, respectively, than others at 150 days after planting. In the changes of plant height, PS and DSAB showed taller than others during growth period, cuttings, CBBS, and CBAS grew rapidly in middle growth stage. Excepting main stem and petiole length, other characters were significant for seedling. Fresh weights were different among seedlings. Even though the yield of plants grown from CBAS and CBBS were lower with 34.7 and 36.4 ton/ha, respectively, than 3.6 ton/ha of DSAB; its yield index were over 95%, hence, those of plants grown from cutting and PS were lower with 73 and 87%, respectively. The ratio of tuberous roots over 200g to total tuberous roots per plant was the highest from DSAB. Most of tuberous roots were under 200g per tuberous root from cuttings. CBBS, CBAS, and DSAB are suitable to use seedlings for high yield of yacono. Yacon plant by DSAB much produced tuberous root of over 200g.

  • This experiment was conducted to test the allelopatic activity on germination and early seedling growth of weed species by barley and sorghum plants residues. The fresh barley extraction inhibited the germination and early seedling growth of weeds, Echinochloa crus-galli, Sataria viridis, and P. oleracea. As the extract concentration increased, the germination and early seedling growth of weeds was significantly inhibited. The water extraction of dried barley and sorghum residues also ehibited the strong inhibition effect on germination and Barley seedling growth of weeds. Digitaria sanguinalis, Siegesbechia pubescens, Sectaria viridis, P. oleracea, E. crus-galli. In the dried barley and sorghum residues mixture into the vermiculite, as the dried residue concentration ncreased, emergence percentage, length of shoot and root of weeds, D. saguinalis, S. viridis, S. pubescens, Ammaranthus lividus, and Solanum nigrum, was significantly inhibited. More than 10% concentration of dired residue caused 80% emergence percentage and growth inhibition. From this study, we conclude that barley and sorghym weeds. These results suggest that barley and sorghum has some possibility to control some weed species like natural herbicide.

  • Background: The production method of ginseng seedlings for ginseng cultivation is very important to ensure healthy rooting system as well as high quality, and yield of the resultant plants. This study was carried out to compare the growth characteristics of 2-year-old ginseng plants that were produced from seedlings grown in self soil nursery (SSN), nursery soil (NS) or hydroponic culture (HC). Methods and Results: The shading prop used was composed of four-layered 4 polyethylene (blue 3 + black 1) shade screen. The management of main field was done by inserting oil cake (1,200 kg/10 a) and then allowing Sudan grass to grow for a year. Seedling transplantation was carried out on April 6. Root growth was measured on October 25. Root weight was observed to be excellent at 6.0 g, following SSN transplantation. Root length was 21.2 cm for HC seedlings, but these plants had a physiological disorder (i.e., rusty root), in 83.5% plants of this treatment. The ratio of PD/PT (protopanaxadiol saponins / protopanaxatriol saponins) was higher in NS seedlings. Plant analysis revealed that Fe content was lower in HC seedlings with high rustiness. The growth of 2-years-old ginseng was different following these varying seedling cultivation methods, but seedlings from NS were not different from those grown in SSN. Conclusions: For the propagation of 2-year-old ginseng plants, NS seedlings may be a good substitute for SSN seedlings.

  • In Asia, rice production has some difficulties with reduction of farm household population and increase of elderly population. As a result, it has resulted in inefficiency and we needs to reduce labor force and improve labor productivity. Direct-seeding in rice could reduce labor and production costs, the area of direct seeding is increasing in japonica rice production in Asia. In direct seedling cultivation competition against weeds is one of most important concern. So, low temperature germinability and mesocotyl elongation should be considered. In this study, we evaluated the mesocotyl length and low temperature germination conducted association analysis using 137 korea core collections. An average length of mesocotyl among 137 core collections was skewed range from 0mm to 43mm. we searched candidate gene around target SNP. Such related traits, genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis was carried out using GAPIT. Also, average mesocotyl length of 394 korea landrace cultivars was measured ranging from minimum 0 mm to maximum 34mm. 30 out of 394 Korea landrace cultivar conducted re-sequencing, and haplotype analysis of candidate gene. we searched these related resources, which including germination of low temperature and mesocotyl elongation. This could be used for the development of direct-seeding cultivars. The valiated accession of core collection and landrace cultivars will be used development of direct-seedling cultivar in the future.

  • To get the basic information about ginseng seedling production, yields of ginseng seedling and soil physico-chemical components in 32 fields of Yang-Jik and 19 fields of Ban-Yang-Jik nursery were investigated. Germination rate is $78.5{\pm}3.0%$, $77.8{\pm}2.8%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of mature seedlings to number of seeds planted is $62{\pm}13.5%$, $53{\pm}12.6%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of available seedlings to number of seeds planted (Rate of available seedling) is $42{\pm}12.5%$, $26{\pm}12.1%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. The number of available seedlings per Kan (Kan means $180{\times}90cm$ area) is $627{\pm}187$, $368{\pm}182$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of unusable seedlings to number of mature seedlings is 34%, 51% in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. It showed the negative correlation between amount of coarse sand and stem height, and central leaf length, on the other hand, possitive correlation between amount of extremely fine sand, and stem height, and central leaf length respectively. Rate of available seedling was positively correlated with amount of medium, fine and extremely fine sand, whereas negatively correlated with amount of coarse sand in Yang-Jik. Root weight per seedling was positively correlated with amount of medium, fine and extremely fine sand. Contents of organic matter, available phosphate and potassium in Ban-Yang-Jik were higher than those of Yang-Jik, but content of lime was higher in Yang-Jik compared to that of Ban-Yang-Jik. Possitive correlations were showed between leaf area per seedling and content of organic matter, and between stem height and content of lime in Yang-Jik. Root weight per seedling was positively correlated with content of organic matter and magnesium in Ban-Yang-Jik, but there is no correlation between any of soil chemical components and root weight in Yang-Jik.

  • Variation of Al tolerance in Pinus densiflora, P. rigida and P. thunbergii was investigated in a solution culture. Root length decreased as Al concentration increased, and decreased more in dilute culture media than in dense one. Aluminum tolerance based on relative root length was in the order of P. rigida > P. densiflora > P. thunbergii. Al content in tissue increased as Al concentration of the media increased, but the reverse was true for content of Ca and Mg. Al tolerance for root length showed intraspecific variation, even under the same Al concentration in the media.

  • Most parts of alfalfa plant have been reported to contain autotoxic substances that inhibit seed germination and early seedling growth, however, the chemical(s) is not still studied much. Effect of seed leachates of 'Vernal' alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was evaluated for inhibition of alfalfa germination and root growth through bioassay. Alfalfa seeds were extracted in 1 L deionized water for 1 h after soaking and the leachates caused to reduce root length of alfalfa significantly as the soaking time increased. Crude seeds at 4 g L$L^{-1}$ exudated autotoxins that reduce significantly root length by 34 % compared to the control, when the seeds soaked in deionized water for 24 h. However, the extracts did not affect final germination as well as speed of germination. Extracts from ground seeds significantly reduced speed of germination (GT 50) and root length. The results indicate that release of autotoxic substances from seeds during seed imbibition was increased with increase of soaking time and seed amount, and that autotoxicity was more occurred in ground seeds than in crude seeds.

  • In order to clarify the biological effects of chemical mutagen, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), in M, seedling(Ponax ginseng C. A. Meyer) . the dehiscent seeds of ginseng were treated with EMS for 12 hours at 20t and Post-washed for 24 to 72 hours. The differences of biological injuries in M, generation due to the concentration of EMS were quite obvious in rate and date of germination, stem length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width, root length, root diameter, and root weight . Especially, the seeds treated with the high concentration of EMS , above 0.8%, were not germinated The growth injury was directly proportional to the concentration of EMS but not relative to the post-washing time of afire 25 hours. The useful range of EMS concentration and post-washing time in ginseng seeds were 0.4 % - 0.6% and above 24 hours, respectively.

  • Well grown trees of ficus bengalensis produce one or more potential inhibitors of seed germination and seedling growth. The aqueous extract of ficus leaf and bark enhanced the shoot length aqueous leaf extract of F. bengalensis. Bark extract of F. bengalensis inhibited the shoot length and root length of the plant at high concentration. Both the bark and leaf extract inhibited the seed germination. The postemergence and preemergence treatment of bark and leaf extract of F. bengalensis reduced the shoot biomass. The result suggest that F. bengalensis may have potential allelochemicals which may be developed as natural herbicides.

  • Seedling emergences of four rice varieties (Dongjinbyeo, Dadajo, Galsaekggarak-sharebyeo, and Italiconaverneco) and three barnyardgrass species(Echjnochloa oryzjcola, E. crus-gali var. crus gali E. crus-gali var. praticola) were evaluated in relation to soil strength. Soil strength was varied by compressing the entire volume of soil with a hydraulic jack so as to be 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6kg /$\textrm{cm}^2$. Soil strength was measured with a penetrometer (Yamanaka type) and soil covering above the seed was 4cm deep. Experiments were conducted at two air temperature conditions of 17 and $25^{\circ}C$. At a soil strength of up to 2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, little or no decrease in seedling emergence occurred in all rice varieties and barnyardgrasses tested. Above that value, seedling emergence decreased progressively as the soil strength increased. The degree of decrease was greatest in Dongjinbyeo and smallest in Dadajo among tested rice varieties, and greatest in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses, being greater in barnyardgrasses than rice. Seedling emergence was delayed almost linearly as the soil strength increased. The delay was greatest in Dongjinbyeo among rice varieties and in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses. Mesocotyl length increased as soil strength increased up to 2 to 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ in Dongjinbyeo and Dadajo in 17$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, and up to 6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in Galsaekggaraksharebyeo and Italiconaverneco in $25^{\circ}C$. Dongjinbyeo showed the least elongation of mesocotyl among rice varieties in any soil strength. The total length of mesotyl, first internode and incomplete leaf showed little variation with soil strength. The total length was longer than the 4cm covering depth in other varieties except Dongjinbyeo. This might have caused the lower emergence rate in Dongjinbyeo than other varieties in higher soil strength.
