  • Atmospheric $CO_2$ concentrations have increased exponentially over the last century and, if continued, are expected to have significant effects on plants and soil. In this study, we investigated the effects of elevated $CO_2$ on the growth of Pinus densiflora seedling and microbial activity in soil. Three-year-old pine seedlings were exposed to ambient as well as elevated levels of $CO_2$ (380 and 760 ppmv, respectively). Growth rates and C:N ratios of the pine seedlings were also determined. Dissolved organic carbon content, phenolic compound content, and microbial activity were measured in bulk soil and rhizosphere soil. The results show that elevated $CO_2$ significantly increased the root dry weight of pine seedling. In addition, overall N content decreased, which increased the C:N ratio in pine needles. Elevated $CO_2$ decreased soil moisture, nitrate concentration, and the concentration of soil phenolic compounds. In contrast, soil enzymatic activities were increased in rhizosphere soil, including ${\beta}$-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase and phosphatase enzyme activities. In conclusion, elevated $CO_2$ concentrations caused distinct changes in soil chemistry and microbiology.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the influence of temperature on the growth rate and nutrient uptake of tobacco seedlings grown on neutralized charcoal bed during temporary transplanting. The highest growth rate was obtained at tile temperature of 26-22-$l8^{\circ}C$, probably due to fast establishment of roots in the soil. Seedling growth was better in neutralized charcoal bed than in chaffy charcoal bed at each temperature. Days required for fresh weight to reach 20g/10p1ants were shortened by 9~12days as the temperature increased from 18-14-$l0^{\circ}C$ to 26-22-$l8^{\circ}C$. Compared with chaffy charcoal bed, days required for fresh weight to reach 20g/10 plants with neutralized charcoal bed were shortened by about 5 days, 4 days, and 2days at 18-14-$l0^{\circ}C$, 22-18-$l4^{\circ}C$, and 26-22-$l8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Three macronutrient (N, $P_2O_5,\;K_2O$) contents in seedlings increased with increase of temperature. At each temperature, N and $K_2O$ contents in seedlings of neutralized charcoal bed was higher than those of chaffy charcoal bed, whereas that of $P_2O_5$ was low conversely. Nitrate nitrogen from nitric acid that was used to neutralize chaffy charcoal was maintained to tile end of seedling period, providing the source of nitrate nitrogen for the better seedlings.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of stem extracts from perilla and buckwheat on the germination and seedling growth of barnyard grass and chinese cabbage. The major results obtained are as follows. The stem extracts showed inhibiting effects on seed germination. The degree of inhibition was much higher with the extracts of perilla than those of buckwheat and more sensitive to chinese cabbage than barnyard grass. The trends of inhibition effects on seedling growth were the same as in the seed germination with lower degree. The roots were more sensitive to the extracts than the tops with higher degree with buckwheat extracts.

  • This experiment was conducted on rice (cv. 2005 Thaoi) seeds to study whether priming with deep sea water (DSW) results in enhancement of seed emergence and seedling growth and to identify the optimum concentration of Deep Sea Water (DSW) for priming. Two experiments were conducted subsequently. In experiment 1, four concentrations of the DSW (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%), and in experiment 2, five concentrations of DSW (10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%) were prepared and seeds were primed for 24 hours duration at $25^{\circ}C$. Beside this, hydro priming with plain water was also included as a control. Experiments were laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Result showed that 20% DSW seed priming treatment had improved the emergence, seedling height, number of roots and root length as compare to other with DSW or without DSW treatments. Beyond 20% DSW priming (i.e. 25%, 30% and 40%) were not suitable for priming the seed. On the basis of seedlings growth parameters; emergence, seedling height, root number and length, and shoot root ratio, 20% DSW priming was the best priming treatment.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigation the growth differentiation between direct sowing and transplanting on P. ginseng cultivated on field and underwood. The results were as follows: In direct sowing treatment, emergence rate of P. ginseng cultivated on field and under conifer forest was above 80%, but it was only 40% at cultivated under broad-leaved forest. And survival rate was directly diminished about 10% every year. In transplanting treatment, survival rate was also diminished every year, it was slighter than that of direct sowing treatment. The growth amount of P. ginseng cultivated underwood was poor, compared to field culture, but there was no significant between conifer forest and broad-leaved forest. In transplanting treatment of 1 to 6 year-root seedling, survival rate of P. ginseng cultivated underwood was equal or slightly good compared to that of cultivated on field. Among seedling age, survival rate of elder seedling was lower than that of younger seedling. In P. ginseng cultivated underwood, the annual growth increment of 1 and 2 year-root seedling increased slowly and continually, whereas, that of 3 to 6 year-root seedling stopped or decreased slightly.

  • For the elucidation of saponin synthesis during ontogeny changes of ginsenosides and free sugars in seeds during stratification and seedlings in early growth stage were investigated with high performance liquid chrom-atography. Embryo plus endosperm at 40-day stratification showed 80% decrease of total saponin, disappear-ance of Rc, Rb$_2$ and Rb$_1$ and appearance of Rg$_3$ (probable) and 20-Glc-Rf (probable). Leaf ginsenoside F$_3$ was found not in fruit plup but seed and decreased during stratification. Both decomposition and synthesis of saponin seemed to occure during stratification. Ginsenosides in endosperm and embryo might be originated from fruit pulp by penetration. In seedling saponin appeared first in shoot and in root about one month later. Ginsenoside Rc, Rb$_2$, Rb$_1$ appeared in root at the last investigation (June 30) indicating normal saponin synthetic capacity of root. Saponin synthetic rate was twice in leaf than in root. Leaf ginsenoside F$_3$ was found in seedling root. Root saponin Rg$_3$ and 20-Glc-Rf were found in leaf and stem in seedling and decreased with growth suggesting that rate saponin is not such in certain growth stage. Total saponin content was negatively correlated with PT/PD in seeds and arial parts of seedling due to greater change of PD. than PT. Seed at 70days stratification showed high sucrose content. In seedling glucose was main sugar in stem all the while and sucrose in root at early stage while glucose, fructose and sucrose were found in leaf.

  • Dried top and root extracts of seven different weed species, fresh top and root extracts, and various concentrations of extract (0, 5, 10 and 15%, W/V) and residue rate (0.0, 0.25. 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%) of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) were used to study their allelopathic effects on alfalfa in the laboratory and greenhouse. Top and root aqueous extracts of common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm), redroot pig-weed (Amaranthus retroflexus L), velvetleaf, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L), canada thistle (Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed (Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, and vigor in alfalfa. Top growth extracts of weeds exhibited greater allelopathic effects than root extracts. Alfalfa test species, WL-320, responded significantly different to the various weed species extracts in terms of allelopathic effect. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed significant variation with respect to germination percentage. Velvetleaf (b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass (b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa. When compared the activity of fresh velvetleaf extract to that of dry velvetleaf extract, dry extract was more inhibitory to alfalfa germination and seedling growth. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Seedling emergence and survival percentage was inhibited by velvetleaf residue mixture treatment. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried top extracts, as compared to extracts from fresh top and root. These results demonstrate the allelopathic activity of different weed species extracts and suggest that weeds may affect crop growth and development due to the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.

  • The study was conducted to investigate an optimum growing condition for various sizes of seedlings of rice for mechanical transplantation under different sowing rates, different levels of fertilizers, different sowing dates and g rowing days. The plant height, leaf number and dry weight of seedlings increased as the sowing rate decreased and amount of fertilizer applied were increased. Also those seedling characters increased as the rice planted late and the total growing periods increased. The factors affected seedling chracters were ordered as following-sowing times>growing days>sowing rate>fertilizer levels. 200 gr. of seeds per box and 4 gr. of fertilizers were optimum for young seedling growth, when sown early. For medium size of seed ling growth, 50 grams and 100 to 125 grams of rice seemed to be adequate for 25 days old and 35 days old seedling, respectively. However, the 45 days old seedling grew too mach and were not suitable for mechanical transplantation. When planted late, similar results were obtained with more differences among treatments. In other words, the suitable plant density was obtained when 100 gr. of seeds were planted per box. Middle class of seedlings were obtained when 100 to 150 gr. of rice were planted per box and grown for 25 days. The seedlings from the box with 100 to 150 gr. of rice per box were over grown and ratio of suitable seedling was also low if they were grown over 35 days.

  • The objective of this paper was to examine the response of rice seedling emergence and early growth under the different temperature (day/night, 29/21$^{\circ}C$, 17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) and the different seeding depth (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm). The trial was carried out in the phytotron and field in the Crop Experiment Station, Suwon, Korea in 1985. Calcium peroxide-coated seeds were very effctive in promoting seedling emergence, seedling establishment and eary growth of rice. Coated seeds were more effective in low temperature condition (17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) than in high temperature (29/21$^{\circ}C$) at the phytotron trial. The deeper the seeding depth, the less the emergence and seedling establishment, and the available seeding depth was I cm in the direct seeding under the flooded soil. In the field trial (seeding date, May 1) the results for the emergence and seedling establishment were similar to those in the phytotron trial. Available cultivars for the direct seeding cultivation under the flooded soil were Cheonmabyeo, Namyangbyeo, Kihobyeo, Akibare, Nakdongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo in Japonica type, and Taebaegbyeo, Samgangbyeo and Gayabyeo in Indica x Jponica type. Coefficients of variation to the emergence and seedling establishment between rice cultivars were very high. Therefore, in the direct seeding cultivation under the submerged paddy, choice of rice cultivars and improved technique for direct seeding will be more necessary.

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of plant growth regulators (PGR) on the root -mat formation of infant seedling (8- to 10-day-old seedling) of rice in machine transplanting. The rice seeds of Odaebyeo were socked in water with different concentrations of PGRs for 48 hours at room temperature. Seeding rate was 220 g per seed tray (30x60x3cm). Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder) was used for a fungicide. Generally, the metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly promoted the root growth of the rice seedling, while tetracy-cle, pachlobutrazol and NTN -821 reduced the seedling height and root length, and thickened the shoot diameter at higher concentation levels. Tetracycle decreased root length of the rice seedlings but increased root number per seedling, and root-mat formation was poor. Whereas, metalaxyl concentrations of 200 and 1,000 ppm markedly increased root length and number of root hairs without decreasing root number, thus root-mat formation was excellent. The optimum concentration of metalaxyl seed treatment to increase the root-mat formation of infant seedling of rice was about 200 ppm. Metalaxyl seed treatment could be advanced one to two days of the duration of root-mat formation compared with control.
