  • This study examined the physicochemical properties of radish pickle containing different natural preservatives (grapefruit seed extract, green tea extract, rosemary, or olive) stored for 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. The hardness and color of the radish pickles with the grapefruit seed extract was higher than the other radish pickles during storage from week 0 to week 4. A 14.52% and 13.80% decrease in hardness and color were observed in the radish pickles with grapefruit seed extract (GFE), respectively. In addition, the total phenolic content was highest in the GFE in natural preservatives. Based on the results, GFE was selected as the optimal natural preservatives, and the growth of total viable bacteria and yeast were evaluated. The total viable bacteria and yeast showed similar patterns to the control. These results are expected to be useful in producing radish pickles with optimal quality and contribute to the development of various foods in the food industry.

  • This study aimed to analyze the structure of the value chain of the olive flounder aquaculture industry to increase the value of this industry. Based on the value chain theory, olive flounder aquaculture industry activities were classified as primary and support activities. The primary activities included seed production, fish production, producer distribution, consumer distribution, and consumption. The support activities were production infrastructure, organization and specialization, R&D, and government policy. A survey was conducted on the costs of seed and fish production in the primary activities to investigate the business structure, and the distribution structure was analyzed to examine distribution costs and margins. In the support activities, the recent trends in R&D and government policy were mainly examined, based on which, a measure to reduce costs and maximize profits was suggested. It is necessary to reduce costs across the production processes by improving seed quality and reducing labor, feed, and management costs, which are strongly associated with support activities. Therefore, lowering costs will be possible in the olive flounder aquaculture industry when R&D outcomes, such as species development, feed quality improvement, and aquaculture system development, are stably diffused and applied in tandem with government policy regarding the industry.

  • Manual seed classification challenges can be overcome using a reliable and autonomous seed purity identification and classification technique. It is a highly practical and commercially important requirement of the agricultural industry. Researchers can create a new data mining method with improved accuracy using current machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches. Seed classification can help with quality making, seed quality controller, and impurity identification. Seeds have traditionally been classified based on characteristics such as colour, shape, and texture. Generally, this is done by experts by visually examining each model, which is a very time-consuming and tedious task. This approach is simple to automate, making seed sorting far more efficient than manually inspecting them. Computer vision technologies based on machine learning (ML), symmetry, and, more specifically, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in related fields, resulting in greater labour efficiency in many cases. To sort a sample of 3000 seeds, KNN, SVM, CNN and CNN-SVM hybrid classification algorithms were used. A model that uses advanced deep learning techniques to categorise some well-known seeds is included in the proposed hybrid system. In most cases, the CNN-SVM model outperformed the comparable SVM and CNN models, demonstrating the effectiveness of utilising CNN-SVM to evaluate data. The findings of this research revealed that CNN-SVM could be used to analyse data with promising results. Future study should look into more seed kinds to expand the use of CNN-SVMs in data processing.

  • Primed seeds germinate faster and uniformly, since these have already started imbibition and metabolism requiring to complete germination. Several factors such as solution composition, osmotic potential, and treatment duration affect seed priming response. Water potentials of priming solution and germination response of primed seed were investigated to clarify the effects different inorganic salt types and the duration. Pepper seeds were primed in osmotic solutions that were osmotic potential ranged -1.54 to -0.45 MPa in an aerated solution of polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG; 17%, 22%, 27%), and inorganic salt solution of $KNO_3$, $K_2SO_4$, and $Na_2SO_4$ (100, 200, 300mM) in aerated condition. The seeds were treated at $20^{\circ}C$ for 4, 6 day (D) and stepwise duration combined concentration of 100mM (2 or 4 days) and 300mM(2 or 4days). After soaking treatment, seeds were washed with distilled water and then were dried to approximately 6% moisture content in dry chamber at $25^{\circ}C$. The germination of seed was characterized by ISAT rules at $20^{\circ}C/30^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. Total germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (MGT), germination uniformity (GU), germination rate (GR), and health seedling percent (HS) were calculated on the germinated seed in a 14-day period. Seed water potential (${\psi}$) was correlated with water potential of priming solution ($r^2=0.84$). The effect of seed priming on germination varies with inorganic salt and organic agents (PEG). Germination percentage (GP, 77 and 73%), GR (21.3 and $19.4 %{\cdot}day^{-1}$), and HS (58 and 52 %) was greatest and lowest MGT (4.2 and 4.8 day) when they were primed in 100mM $K_2SO_4$ (${\psi}=-0.45MPa$), and 100mM $KNO_3$ (${\psi}=-0.52MPa$) for 6 days compared to untreated control (67% GP, $19.7%{\cdot}day^{-1}\;GR$, 18% HS, and 10.8 day MGT) in $15^{\circ}C$ chamber. Water potential less then -1.2MPa of osmotic solution resulted lower GP, GR and HS and in $K_2SO_4$ and $KNO_3$. However, stepwise treatment of water potential that changed solution as 100mM for 4 D + 300mM for 2 D or 300mM for 4 D + 100mM for 2 D) were not better than single concentration alone in germination characteristics.

  • The production of abalone seed has grown and been specialized since the 2000s with the growth of the abalone farming industry. Despite the increase in the production of abalone seeds, the sales volume of abalone seeds remained flat and competition among producers increased. This paper will analyze the management efficiency of abalone seed production fishery to diagnose the management status and improve the abalone seed production efficiency. In addition, this study is the result of the basic research on the abalone seed industry and it is meaningful to prepare a platform for further research since the management status survey and the management efficiency survey of abalone seed production fishery have not been conducted until now. The data on the farmed fish prices of abalone seeds were collected from surveys of sample fish as part of the fish seed observation project conducted by the Fisheries Outlook Center (FOC) of Korea Maritime and Fisheries Development Institute (KMI). Management efficiency analysis utilizes DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model. The DEA model was analyzed by classifying into CCR (Super-CCR), BCC, and SBM (Super-SBM) models according to the assumptions taking into account the characteristics of the industry. The slack considered in the SBM model was judged as possible decreases in input variables and increase in output variables. The average efficiency from the CCR model was analyzed to be 69%. The BCC model was classified into input and output orientations, and the average efficiency was 79% and 75%, respectively. There were seven production fisheries with an SE value of 1 or more, which remained unchanged in terms of size and could be benchmarked. The average efficiency of the SBM model was 59% for CRS and 66% for VRS. Under the VRS assumptions, the variable increase/decrease efficiency analysis shows that labor costs can be reduced by 37.3%, facility capacity by 18.8%, and operating costs by 8.5%. In order to improve management efficiency, Wando needs to reduce labor and management costs. In Jindo region, sales increase as well as labor cost reduction is urgent. In other regions, reduced facilities and increased sales are recommended.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the distributions of the native and introduced dandelins in the western Kyonggido area and to determine the environmental factor influencing distribution of dandelions. One hundered and thirty seven study sites were randomly selected along roadsides in urban areas, arable lands, apartment areas and industry regions, and vegetation, dandelion's seed characters and soil acidity were sureyed. Throughout the areas the introduced dandelions were more widely distributed than the native ones. The native dandelions were scarcely distributed in the developed areas and roadsides. The introduced dandelions were dominantly distributed in the new environments where soils were alkalized by the trban development, road pavement, and construction of new buildings, while the native ones were mostly distributed in the rural area with weakly acid soil. The seed production of the introduced ones were two times more than that of the native ones. The seed of the introduced ones were lighter than that of the native ones. The introduced ones yield seeds more than four times a year. These results suggested the urbanization and the seed characters to bet the two dominant factors influencing the distribution of dandelions.

  • Phorbol ester extraction was carried out from Jatropha curcas seed cake, a by-product from the biodiesel fuel industry. Four repeated extractions from 5 g of J. curcas seed cake using 15 ml of 90% (v/v) ethanol and a shaking speed of 150 rpm gave the highest yield of phorbol esters. The ethanolic extract of J. curcas seed cake showed antifungal activities against important fungal phytopathogens: Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium aphanidermatum, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum, Colletotrichum capsid, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The extract contained phorbol esters mainly responsible for antifungal activities. The extract could therefore be used as an antifungal agent for agricultural applications.

  • The use of sustainable technologies such as supplementary cementitious materials, and/or recycled post-consumer environmental wastes is widely used in concrete industry in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of normal concrete containing sustainable technologies. Twenty one mixtures (21) were prepared with different combinations of silica fume, fly ash, olive's seed ash, and corncob ash (CCA). Fresh and hardened concrete properties were measured, as expected the inclusion of the sustainable technologies affected both fresh and hardened concrete properties. Based on the results obtained in this study and the analyses conducted, the following observations were drawn: replacing the cement by olive's seed ash or CCA has a significant effect on fresh concrete workability. Olive's seed ash increased the slump by more than 200 % compared to the control mixtures. The compressive strength of mixtures containing olive's seed ash showed by 45 and 75 % decrease compared to the control mixtures. The 28 days compressive strength of mixtures produced by CCA of 10 % replacement decreased by 41 % compared to the control mixture.

  • Chinese cabbage is a staple food to Korean, which has the high degree of self-sufficiency and worldwide breeding technique in the aspect of seed. However, the producers' competitiveness has been decreasing after the agricultural product market was open. In order to cope with this problem, the government introduced some policies for promoting seed industry in 2007 to reflect producer's needs for high quality seeds of Chinese cabbage. These policies will be a good opportunity for producers to secure and promote the producers' competitiveness against low-price importing Chinese cabbage. In this aspect it is very important to know how well these policies are established and what Chinese cabbage farmers want in regard to a new variety of Chinese cabbage seed. This study was carried out to look over the Chinese cabbage producers' using pattern about a new variety of seed and show some directions for efficient way of diffusion of a new variety of seed to producers using a survey research. The main results are as follows. The producers thought the characteristics of a new variety of seed most important factor compared to other factors such as the seed price, and easiness of cabbage sales when they choose a seed. Also, the 65% of respondents were willing to accept a new variety of seed and thought the government support for an exhibition field and diffusing public information about a new variety of Chinese cabbage seed are important in accepting a new variety of seed.

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of breads made with addition of lotus(Nelumbo nucifera) seeds powder. Breads were prepared with 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%(w/w) lotus seed powder instead of wheat flour. The moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash and crude fiber contents of the breads increased as the proportion of lotus seed powder increased. The pH of the breads increased as lotus seed powder levels increased. The weight of breads increased with increasing lotus seed powder levels, whereas volume decreased. The specific volumes of breads with lotus seed powder were in the range of $3.59{\sim}4.68\;mL/g$, whereas the control value was 5.12 mL/g. The baking loss rates of breads prepared with 5%, 15% and 20% lotus seed powder were 8.95%, 8.17% and 7.67%, respectively. Lightness (L value) of breads was decreased by addition of lotus seed powder, whereas redness (a value) and yellowness (b value) increased in crumb and crust. Texture measurements showed that hardness and gumminess increased with increased lotus seed powder levels, but springiness decreased. In sensory evaluation, the highest scores for flavor, taste and overall preference were obtained when lotus seed powder content was 10%, and color and texture were the best when 5% of lotus seed powder was added. Thus, addition of $5{\sim}10%$ lotus seed powder may have a role in functional bread preparation, resulting in improved quality.
