Sedum kamchaticum, Sedum middendorffianum and Sedum takesimense belong to the sebum species. Especially, Sedum takesimense is a Korean native species growing only on Ullenung-do. Few studies for the biological activities of these plants have been reported. In this study, we examined biological activity and the contents of functional components of the aerial part and the root part of Sedum kamchaticum, Sedum middendorffianum and Sedum takesimense. As the results, the roots of Sedum takesimense showed the highest total phenolic contents (TPC : $13040{\pm}50.0mg\;GAE{\cdot}100g^{-1}$), and the aerial part of Sedum takesimens showed the highest total flavonoid contents (TFC : $2722.2{\pm}107.1mg\;CAE{\cdot}100g^{-1}$). Meanwhile, Sedum middendorffianum exhibited the highest anti-oxidant activity (DPPH $RC_{50}$ value of aerial part : $50.69{\pm}0.75{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, DPPH $RC_{50}$ value of root part : $27.27{\pm}0.55{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$; ABTS $RC_{50}$ value of aerial part : $11.32{\pm}0.38{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, ABTS $RC_{50}$ value of roots part $5.54{\pm}0.02{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). The root part of Sedum middendorffianum showed the potent alpha glucosidase inhibitory activity (AGI $IC_{50}$ : $60.69{\pm}0.72{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). In order to elucidate active principle of Sedum middendorffianum that was shown the most potent antioxidant and anti-diabetic activities, the methanol extract of Sedum middendorffianum was fractionated with various solvents according to the polarity successively. As a result, EtOAc fraction of Sedum middendorffianum showed the highest contents of functional components (TPC : $16245.8{\pm}1025.7mg\;GAE{\cdot}100g^{-1}$, TFC : $4850.4{\pm}182.9mg\;CAE{\cdot}100g^{-1}$). And it also showed excellent anti-oxidant activities (DPPH $RC_{50}$ : $14.0{\pm}0.6{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, ABTS $RC_{50}$ : $3.4{\pm}0.1{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) and anti-diabetic activity (AGI $IC_{50}$ : $79.0{\pm}2.2{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). Above results suggest that Sedum middendorffianum can be developed to health functional material as a plant resource with potent antioxidant activity.

Rooftop greening is the alternative of urban heat island. The purpose of this study is selecting Sedum to the effect of temperature reduction of the rooftop greening. Since the state of growth is excellent, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum surveyed as coverage. It was investigated that there is the effect of reducing the temperature. The effect of temperature reduction of Sedum counted compound was found to be associated with state of growth. When you construct a rooftop greening, planting Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum is helpful to the effect of temperature reduction. Also, the ingredients various types of Sedum in order to reduce the effective temperature, it must be densified. It must demonstrate an additional effect of temperature reduction of Sedum through complementary and continuous monitoring of the future temperature monitoring method.
The effect of basal nutrients concentrations and exogenous auxin for root induction from leaves of Sedum takesimense were investigated for mass-propagation. Root induction rates were significantly different from the concentrations of basal salts but not influenced by supplemented IBA in the medium. The lowest concentration of MS basal salts (1/10) was most effective to induce roots from leaves followed 1/5 MS, and 1/2 and full strength MS medium. Supplement of IBA $10{\mu}M$ in the medium did not improve the root induction that resulted no differences compare to the hormone free media. Rooted leaves were transplanted in soil and survived in greenhouse.
This study investigated anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of Sedum takesimense ethanolic extract, and 3 isolated compounds. To confirm anti-inflammatory and anti-acne activities, a nitric oxide (NO) inhibition assay, pro-inflammatory factor (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8) inhibition assays, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests were performed. The 3 isolated compounds were identified as 4,6-di-O-galloylarbutin (OGA), 2,4,6-tri-O-galloyl-glucose (OGG), and 1,2,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-glucose (TOGG). The ethanolic extract and isolated compounds (OGA, OGG, TOGG) effectively inhibited production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8). Furthermore, OGG and TOGG exhibited MIC values toward Cutibacterium acnes of 12.5 ㎍/mL and 3.2 ㎍/mL, respectively. These results suggest that S. takesimense extract exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, and an antibacterial efficacy against C. acnes.

This study was conducted to investigate growth characteristics of irrigation period of greenary mats focused on management as a material to apply on rooftop. Using Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense, Sedum reflexum, Sedum album and Sedum burrito greenary mats were made. The irrigation periods were every 3 days, 7 days, and 10 days after made each greenary mats.1. All treatments on survival ratio of 5 Sedum species were over 96%. Especially, new individuals were emerged from naturally detached leaves. 2. Growth of S. kamtschaticum, S. takesimense, S. reflexum were good on 7 day irrigation treatment. 3. The highest covering ratio of S. burrito was 3 day irrigation treatment, and the hightest of the others were 7 day irrigation treatment. Considerations for species selection, mixture, ratio and management were obtained from this study.

Sedum takesimenses among the Korean Native Genus Sedum was selected as evergreen ground covers during winter in the central districts of Korea. In order to obtain basic information for production as a pot flower with good quality, the effects of pinching frequencies on growth and flowering of S. takesimense were investigated. S. takesimense plant height became much shorter and numbers of lateral shoots were increased with increased pinching. Shoots of S. takesimense treated with 30% pinching during 2004 and 2005 showed greater length and less number of lateral shoots than those with 60% pinching. Leaves of S. takesimense treated with 70% shading showed a dark green color and had a longer shoot length and a lower number of shoots than cultivation under full sunlight. Therefore, Korean native S. takesimense will be utilized as ground cover treated with 70% shading or under a tree. Therefore, S. takesimense will be promising as ground cover materials in the central districts of Korea.

This study was carried out to suggest an appropriate plant combination by evaluating the growth of flowering ground-cover plants planted with Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' on the roof-top environment. As for the plant materials, Allium senescens and Chrysanthemum coreanum which are shorter than Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' and Sedum takesimense and Agastache rugosa which are taller than Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' were selected. Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' was planted on Conrol, and Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' with Allium senescens (T1), Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' with Sedum takesimense (T2), Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' with Agastache rugosa(T3), and Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' with Chrysanthemum coreanum (T4) were planted in each experimental plot. Plant height and covering rate were measured to evaluate the growth of Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue'. Also, relative growth rate (RGR) of plant height, RGR of plant width, and mortality rate of the flowering ground-cover plants were estimated. Plant height and cover rate of Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' was greatest in T3. RGR of plant height was greater in the order of Agastache rugosa, Allium senescens, Chrysanthemum coreanum, and Sedum takesimense. In particular, RGR of plant width was also greatest for Agastache rugosa. Mortality rates of Agastache rugosa and Allium senescens were lowest at 11%. Therefore, based on good growth of Festuca glauca 'Eljiah Blue' planted with Agastache rugosa, these results were suggested as a desirable combination of plant species for rooftop gardening.
Sequences of the trnL/F intergenic spacer of chloroplast DNA were used to investigate the intraspecific evoution and phylogeography of Sedum takesimense (Crassulaceae). The trnL/F intergeneric spacer sequences from 32 individuals of S. takesimense were either 291 bp (17 samples "without indel" in the following) or 297 bp (15samples "with indel 1") in length due to an indel of 6 bp. Two main cpDNA haplotypes were detected within S. takesimense. The haplotype with indel was found on Ulleung Island and without indel on Ulleung Island and Dok Island. This confirmed the existence of two cpDNA lineages with different geographical distributions. The cpDNA sequence analysis also suggested a putative long-distance dispersal event between Ulleung Island and Dok Island.
There are a growing number of reports of hospital-acquired infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Many plant products are now being used as a natural means of exploring antimicrobial agents against different types of human pathogenic bacteria. In this research, we sought to isolate and identify an active molecule from Sedum takesimense that has possible antibacterial activity against various clinical isolates of MRSA. NMR analysis revealed that the structure of the HPLC-purified compound was 1,2,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-glucose. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of different extract fractions against numerous pathogenic bacteria was determined, and the actively purified compound has potent antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria, i.e., MRSA and its clinical isolates. In addition, the combination of the active compound and β-lactam antibiotics (e.g., oxacillin) demonstrated synergistic action against MRSA, with a fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of 0.281. The current research revealed an alternative approach to combating pathogenesis caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria using plant materials. Furthermore, using a combination approach in which the active plant-derived compound is combined with antibiotics has proved to be a successful way of destroying pathogens synergistically.
This study was conducted to investigate growth responses at 45 days after cutting in six Sedum cultivars (S. reflexum 'Blue Spruce', S. rupestre 'Angelina', S. sexangulare, S. sexangulare var. elatum, S. spurium 'Atropurpureus', S. takesimense) using vegetation mats (individual coir tape and jute treated with different thicknesses and soil compositions) to broaden usefulness of evergreen Sedum cultivars. All the treatments including both single and interaction between treatments showed significant effects (p<0.001) on the number of branches, plant height, and shoot fresh weight except the number of branches treated with different mat types. No. of branches was showed two times in compost than in sand regardless of cultivars and mat types with the exception of S. takesimense showing no added branches in all treatments. Each plant height of all the cultivars except 'Angelina' showed the highest value under the conditions treated with 5 mm thick coir tape using compost. The fresh weight of 'Blue Spruce' treated with 5 mm thick coir tape using compost was 13.19 g of which value was the highest in all treatments. The better growth response in all Sedum cultivars was shown in the treatment of 5 mm thick coir tape than with jute net treatment.
