Higher plants can be categorized as C3, C4 or CAM according to their photosynthetic pathways, and some succulent plants are known to shift their patterns of photosynthesis from C3 to CAM in response to environmental stresses such as salt treatment or water deficiency. To investigate fundamental photosynthetic patterns and the induction of pattern shifts (C3, CAM, C3-CAM etc.) as a result of environmental stresses, we measured the water content, diurnal changes in pH, net $CO_2$ exchange, transpiration rate, total ionic contents, and osmolality of Kalancoe daigremontiana, Sedum kamschaticum and Sedum sarmentosum which belong to Crassulaceae known as representative CAM plant, after 10 days of drought treatment. S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum did not show a significant difference in diurnal pH variation in the treatment and control conditions. However, the pH of drought-treated Kalancoe was low at night and high in the daytime, with a pH value between 4 and 5. Typical CAM plants display a net $CO_2$ exchange that increases at night and decreases in the daytime. Kalancoe displayed the predicted pattern. However, S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum showed a photosynthetic pattern more typical of C3 plants, and did not show changes in photosynthetic pattern under drought stress. Kalancoe also showed a transpiration rate typical for CAM pho-tosynthesis, whereas the transpiration rates of S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum were in the typical range for C3 photosynthesis. Kalancoe had high total ionic contents during the night, which decreased somewhat during the daytime, whereas S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum displayed the opposite pattern. This result is similar to the diurnal patterns of changes in pH in the three plant species, which suggests a relationship between pH and ionic contents. S. sarmentosum showed lower osmolality under drought stress than in the control condition, whereas the osmolality of Kalancoe and S. kamschaticum did not differ between conditions. S. sarmentosum may have maintained internal water content by lowering its osmolality and raising its total ionic contents. In conclusion, Kalancoe displayed the characteristic responses of a typical CAM plant, whereas S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum displayed aspects of the C3 photosynthetic pattern under drought conditions. These results suggest that S. kamschaticum and S. sarmentosum (Crassulacea) in Korea overcome drought stress by increasing solute and ionic contents internally rather than changing their photosynthetic pattern from C3 to CAM under drought stress.
The antimicrobial activity of seventy five ethanol extracts obtained from 67 different kinds of plant species of the Mongolian flora were evaluated by means of the disc diffusion method against five species of microorganisms, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among the plant extracts examined, 34 kinds of extracts demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against one or more species of microorganisms, respectively. Especially, the root extract of Paeonia anomala, the whole herb extract of Myricaria alopecuroides, the whole herb extract of comarum zalesovianum, the whole herb extract of Agrimonia pilosa and some other plant extracts demonstrated a particularly potent antimicrobial activity. The ethylacetate fractions obtained from the whole herb extract of Myricaria alopecuroides and from those of Sedum aizoon, Paeonia anomala, Sedum hybridum and Dasiphora fruticosa exhibited a particularly potent antibacterial activity especially against Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus.
Green roof's performance in reducing stormwater runoff has been reported by numerous studies. Nonetheless, the roles of low growing vegetation in influencing stormwater runoff reduction on green roofs have been greatly overlooked. This paper describes an experiment investigating the influence of low growing vegetation in the reduction of tropical stormwater runoff on extensive green roofs. Three types of locally occurring native vegetation and one non-native Sedum species were selected (fern, herb, grass and succulent) for the experiment. Stormwater runoff reduction performance from different low growing species was done by measuring excess water runoff from the simulated green roof modules. The results show significant differences in stormwater runoff reduction from different types of vegetation. Fern was the most effective in reducing stormwater runoff, followed by herb, Sedum and grass. Vegetative characters that are found to attribute towards the performance of stormwater runoff are rooting density, structure, density, leaf type, and vegetation biomass.

This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base in selecting the cold tolerance of plants. The cold tolerance of the plants were subject to laboratory low temperature treatments and cold processing time were evaluated using both electrolyte leakage and regrowth test. The Logistic model of nonlinear regression analysis was used to evaluate the lethal temperatures that were predicted with the range of $-16.1{\sim}-24.4^{\circ}C$. The order of low-temperature resistance was Sedum reflexum > S. spurium > Ophiopogon japonicus > S. album > S. takevimense > Dianthus chinensis. At the lowest temperature of $13.4^{\circ}C$ the electrolyte leakage value of the plants were lower than 50% demonstrating that they could be applied stably to the roof installed in Korea during the winter with the lowest temperature of $-13.5^{\circ}C$.
The succulent herbaceous perennial Sedum sarmentosum commonly grows in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is a species native to China, most likely introduced into Korea due to its edible and medicinal uses. If plants were introduced from a single source, we would expect no or low levels of genetic variation in Korean populations. Alternatively, if plants were introduced from multiple sources, we would expect, in contrast, high levels of genetic diversity. To test which is more likely, we surveyed the degree of allozyme variation in ten populations of this species from southern Korea. We found that S. sarmentosum was monomorphic at all fifteen allozyme loci. However, two congeners (S. polytrichoides and S. kamtschaticum) and two related species (Hylotelephium ussuriense and H. verticillatum) maintain moderate to high levels of genetic diversity ($H_e=0.144$, 0.203, 0.201, and 0.204, respectively). We suggest that southern Korean populations of S. sarmentosum likely descended from a single introduction of a few plants and then became naturalized exclusively via vegetative spreading (as plants in Korea, but also as occurs in other parts of its native and naturalized range, are sterile).
This study was carried out to survey the distribution of Korean native Sedum rotundifolium and environmental conditions of their native habitats. Sedum rotundifolium could be found only at the Mt. Juwang and its vicinity, Okgae valley. And most of Sedum rotundifolium plants in habitats were positioned between the chasm of cliffs in middle mountainous area having altitudes ranging about 250~450 m. Most of soil conditions in native habitats were somewhat arid, and light intensities were ranged from 1 to 90 % of those at the open area. But relative humidity, air temperature and soil temperature showed little difference compared with those of open area. Soil acidities were ranged from pH 5.0 to 7.0, and relatively high amount of humus, total $P_2O_5$, Ca, and Mg were measured at habitat area. On the other hand, growth of Sedum rotundifolium was significantly different according to habitat sites.

In order to evaluate 2 extensive green roof systems(Sedum Box Roof System and Roof-rainwater Utilization System) for urban greening and select ground-cover plants, which can adapt well to the drought tolerance in an extensive green roof system on 12 species. This study was carried out in order to suggest an experimental base in assessment of the Green Roof-rainwater Utilization System and selecting the drought resistance of plants. Adopting the natural drought method, this paper studies the drought resistance of 12 kinds of ground cover plants. The drought-resistance of ground cover plants subjected to dry processing time were evaluated using relative water content on leaves, relative electric conductivity and chlorophyll content in 12 kinds of plants, and the relation between soil water content under drought stress. Drought resistance of the plants were subject to rooftop drought resistance treatments. The result showed that with the increase of stress time, the relative water content and chlorophyll content on leaves were in a downward trend while the relative electric conductivity was in an upward trend. Among the 12 species of ground cover plants, excluding Pulsatilla koreana, Ainsliaea acerifolia was selected for rooftop plants because they showed resistance to drought strongly and took adaptive ability. These results showed that drought tolerance of plants in Roof-rainwater Utilization System were stronger than the Sedum Box Roof System. Therefore, the Roof-rainwater Utilization System is good for plants. It helps them adapt well to the drought tolerance in rooftops and can be used for urban greening.

Changes in land use and increase in urban energy consumption influence urban life. This study analyzed the characteristics and patterns of urban heat and presents management schemes to generate a comfortable and sustainable urban environment. The study aimed to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on improving the microclimate through evapotranspiration using perennial herbs. We have designed a chamber that could control constant temperature and humidity, measure temperature reductions in each plant and changes in sensible heat and latent heat. This study identified Sedum kamtschaticum as the most effective plant in controlling temperature. At $22^{\circ}C$, $3.2^{\circ}C$ temperature reduction was observed, whereas four other plants showed a $1.5^{\circ}C$ reduction. At $25^{\circ}C$, $2.0^{\circ}C$ temperature reduction was observed. On the other hand, the use of Sedum sarmentosum resulted in the lowest effect. Zoysia japonica is the most commonly used ground covering plant, although the temperature reduction of Lysimachia nummularia was more effective at high temperature conditions. Sensible heat and latent heat were calculated to evaluate the thermal performance of energy. At a temperature >$30^{\circ}C$, L. nummularia and S. sarmentosum emitted high latent heat. In this study, we analyzed the thermal performance of green roof perennial plants; in particular, we analyzed the evapotranspiration and temperature reduction of each plant. Since the substrate depth and types, plant species, and seasonal change may influence temperature reduction and latent heat of green roofs, further studies are necessary.

Experiment was performed to investigate the effect of light intensity on growth and flowering status of Korean native Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus, Sedum middendorifianum, Hemerocallis aurantiaca, Iris ensata var. spontanea and Aquilegia buergeriana var. oxysepola for effective landscaping. Number of floret and flower stalk per a plant were markedly increased under full sun(about 100,000lux), and decreased with decreasing light intensity in all tested plants. This result indicate that it will be cultivated in the open for promote landscaping values. However, leaf area and plant height were more increased under half sun(22,000lux) than open(100,000lux) or shade(7,700lux) in all plants except Sedum middendorifianum. Especially, Hemerocallis aurantiaca had same number of shoot and leaf size, even if planted under shade condition to show a wide adaptation to various light intensities.

Four cover plants such as Phlox subulata, Glechoma hederacea var. longituba, Sedum middendorffianum and Saxifraga laciniata were evaluated to investigate the effect of companion planting on reducing soil erosion in Chinese cabbage cultivated highland. The experiment was conducted using lysimeters of $5\;m{\times}2\;m$ (length$\times$width) with 5, 15 and 30% slopes. Companion plants except Sedum middendorffianum did not interface with growth of Chinese cabbage Glechoma hederacea var. longituba and Sedum middendorffianum grew faster than Phlox subulata and Saxifraga laciniata in the early growth stage suer transplanting, resulting in fast ground covering, but the ground covering by Phlox subulata and Saxifraga laciniata was delayed because growth suppression by high air temperature during summer season. Soil erosion became severe as increasing degree of slope. Assessments of the four cover plants were conducted in relation to soil conservation characteristic of scenery, endurance to the environment stress, plant growth and weed suppression. From the assessments, Phlox subulata was superior to other intercropping crops tested for reducing soil erosion in highland cultivation of Chinese cabbage.
