Sado, Chudo, Mokdo, Nangdo, and Jeokgeumdo are the islands which belong to Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do and there are various kinds of volcanic rocks, volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks, and dinosaur-fossil bearing sedimentary rocks on these islands. This study is designed to constrain geologic ages of these volcanic and sedimentary rocks. K-Ar ages of these rocks indicate that the volcanism of this area occurred mainly during the period of 91.8 ${\pm}$ 3.5∼65.5 ${\pm}$ 1.3(l$\sigma$) Ma. Deposition ages of the sedimentary rocks were bracketed based on the ages of the volcanic rocks and observed field relationship between sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The oldest sedimentary deposit of the area is the volcanic pebble bearing conglomerate of the Jeokgeumdo and its deposition age is ca. 81 Ma or less. The deposition age of the Chudo shale, which belongs to stratigraphically upper sequence and bears many dinosaur footprints, is at least ca. 77 Ma. Conglomerate of the Mokdo was deposited at ca. 72∼70 Ma. The deposition age of the dinosaur fossil deposit of the Sado is at least ca. 65 Ma. All the investigated volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Yeosu islands were formed during the late Cretaceous and dinosaurs lived until the latest Cretaceous in this area.
Absolute age of the deposition of 1.3 km-thick Bunthang sequence within the Skardu intermontane basin of the Central Karakoram was determined using radioactive decay of cosmogonic $^{10}Be$ and $^{26}Al$ burial dating. The Bunthang sequence deposited around 2.65 Ma, which is the oldest glaciation in the region. The timing of deposition of the Bunthang sequence is consistent with the previous suggestion that the basin filling took place between Brunhess and Matuyama chrons. Four major sedimentary facies interfinger within the Bunthang sequence: glacial diamict, lacustrine, fluvial and lacustrine facies upward. This sedimentary distinctiveness and the lack of evidence on the faults for alternative pull-apart basin model around the Bunthang sequence, suggest that the depressional basin was formed by deep subglacial erosion during the exrtensive Bunthang Glacial Stage and subsequently the sediments underlain by basal diamict, was quickly deposited by preglacial and paraglacial processes. Temporary ponding of the Indus River due to tectonic uplift in the downstream or blockage by mass movements might make the basin filing more possible. The hypothesis that the single ice sheet developed on the Tibetan Plateau during the global last glacial cycle should be refuted by the existence of the older extensive Bunthang glacier Furthermore, the extensive glaciation during the early Quaternary (and thus progressive decrease in extent with time) suggests that there may have been significant uplift of the Pamir to the west and Himalaya to the south, which would have reduced the penetration of westerlies and Indian summer monsoon and hence moisture supply to the region.
The purpose of this study is to develop teaching materials for geological fieldwork around the area of Mai Mountain and to analyze the responses of elementary teachers as to the application of fieldwork. The site of geological fieldwork, Mai Mountain area, is located around the Maisan Provincial Park of Jinan-gun, Jeonbuk Province where a large-scale sedimentary succession in the era of Cretaceous is shown. It provides an easy access to distinct outcrops around the provincial park. The sequences reveal different kinds of sedimentary rocks and various sedimentary structures, and provide information of the lacustrine sedimentary environments of the Cretaceous. In addition, metamorphic rocks and structures formed at the margin of the basement and the basinal fault as well as a sedimentary sequence of the Quaternary formed in a modern fluvial stream are observable. A 4-step fieldwork procedure was applied to a group of 13 elementary teachers. Through questionnaire and interview, results showed that (a) the geological fieldwork and materials were effective to positively increase science teaching from the participating teachers, and that (b) there is a great need of the development of various fieldwork sites and teaching materials that promote active fieldwork for students to have their lived experience and knowledge gain. It is suggested that teacher education programs be able to provide active fieldwork for elementary inservice teachers to properly carry out a geological fieldwork for their students.
Seismic reflection profiles and exploratory drilling well samples from the southern marginal-continental shelf basin of Korea delineate that the Tertiary sedimentary sequences can be grouped into five sequences (Sequence A, Sequence B, Sequence C, Sequence D and Sequence E, in descending order). Paleontologic data, K-Ar age datings, correlation with tuff layers and sequence stratigraphic analysis reveal that the sequences A, B, C, D and E can be considered as the deposits of Holocene $\~$ Pleistocene, Pliocene, Late Miocene, Early $\~$ Middle Miocene and Oligocene, respectively. The sequence stratigraphic and structural analyses suggest that the southern part of the Cheju Basin had experienced severe folding and faulting. NE-SW trending strike-slip movement is responsible for the deformation. The sinistral movement of strike-slip fault ceased before the deposition of Sequence B. Age dating and rare-earth elements analysis of volvanic rocks reveal+ that the Sequence D was deposited during the Early $\~$ Middle Miocene and the Sequence I was deposited earlier than the deposition of the Green Tuff Formation. Sedimentary petrological studies indicate that sediments of the Sequence I came from the continental block provenance. After the deposition of the Sequence E, uplift of the source area resulted in increase of sediment supply, subsidence and volcanic activities. The Sequence D show these factors and the sediments of the Sequence D are considered to be transported from the recycled orogenic belt.
The Cretaceous Poongam sedimentary Basin in Kangwon-do, Korea consists alluvial deposits of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones or siltstones, and volcaniclastics. The Poongam Basin was formed as a fault margin sag or a transpressional basin developed along a strike-slip fault zone, and received huge amount of clastic sediments from the adjacent fault-scaip. It formed an aggrading alluvial fan system and a volcaniclast-supplied marginal lake environment, while tectonic activity and volcanism attenuated toward the end of basin formation. Following the Folk's classification, the sandstones of the Poongam Basin are identified as lithic wackes or feldspathic wackes. The areal and sequential variation of the mineral composition in the sandstones is not distinct. The results of K-Ar age dating from the intruding andesites, volcaniclastics and volcanic fragments in sedimentary rocks show a range of 70 Ma to 84 Ma. It suggests that volcarism occurred sequentially within a relatively short period as the pre-, syn-, and post-depositional events. It was the short period in the late Cretaceous that the basin had evolved i.e., the basin formation, the sediment input and fill, and the , intrusion and extrusion of volcanic rocks occurred. The Poongam sedimentary sequence is a typical tectonic-controlled coarse sedimentary facies which is texturally immature.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the specific terms of epistemic and epistemological by reviewing the literature on epistemological understanding of science learning, examine the necessity of epistemic discourse analysis based on the view of social epistemology, and provide an exemplar of practical epistemology analysis for elementary children's science learning. The review was conducted in terms of meaning and terminology about epistemic or epistemological approach to science learning, epistemology of/for science, and methodologies for epistemic discourse analysis. As an alternative way of epistemic discourse analysis in science classroom I employed practical epistemology analysis (by Wickman), evidence-explanation continuum (by Duschl), and DREEC diagram (by Maeng et al.). The methods were administered to an elementary science class for the third grade where children observed sedimentary rocks. Through the outcomes of analysis I sought to understand the processes how children collected data by observation, identified evidence, and constructed explanations about rocks. During the process of practical epistemology analysis the cases of four categories, such as encounter, stand-fast, gap, and relation, were identified. The sequence of encounter, stand fast, gap, and relation showed how children observed sedimentary rocks and how they came to learn the difference among the rocks. The epistemic features of children's observation discourse, although different from scientists' discourses during their own practices, showed data-only conversation, evidence-driven conversation, or explanation inducing conversation. Thus I argue even elementary children are able to construct their own knowledge and their epistemic practices are productive.
It is generally well known that Quaternary is characteristic geologically in terms of glacial and interglacial repeats and their associated unconformity formation. This paper deals with the first finding of the characteristic and significant meaningful unconformity between Holocene and late Pleistocene, which implies submergence and emergence of the tidal sedimentary basin along the western coastal zone of Korea during interglacial stage(IOS-5e) and glacial time(IOS-2). The stratigraphy of intertidal deposits in the Haenam Bay, western coast of Korea shows two depositional sequence units (Unit I of Holocene and Unit II of late Pleistocene) bounded by an erosional surface of disconformity. The disconformity is related to the latest Pleistocene sea-level lowstands (probably during the LGM). The Unit II is interpreted as intertidal deposit showing tidal sedimentary structures and crab burrow ichnology and has two parts (the upper part and the lower part) showing different lithology and character. The upper part of Unit II shows characteristic subaerial exposure features (emergence) and its related lithology. Such subaerially exposed upper part (more or less 4m to 5m in thickness) is characterized by yellow-brownish sediment color, cryoturbat-ed structure, crab burrow ichnofacies and high value of shear strength. Geochemical and clay mineral analyses of the upper part sediments also indicate subaerial exposure and weathering. In particular, very high value of magnetic susceptibility of the upper part in comparison to that of the lower part is interpreted as pedogenetic weathering during the subaerial exposure period.
Stratigraphic subdivision, correlation and depositional environments of Oligocene strata in the Cheju basin are studied using microfossils, wireline-log, trace elements from Geobuk-1, Okdom-1 and JDZ V-2 exploratory wells as well as seismic attributes. Application of these Integrated approaches is becoming increasingly an important tool in sedimentary and petroleum geology. The purpose of this study is to provide an integrated sequence-stratigraphic interpretation for petroleum system in the Cheju basin. During the last several years the Cheju basin has been studied for petroleum potential in terms of sequence stratigraphy. The strata assigned to be of the Early Miocene in the previous studies are reinterpreted to be of Oligocene in age. Depositional environments of these strata are also reinterpreted to have been influenced significantly by marine floodings. This interpretation is supported by the lines of evidence such as occurrences of abundant dinoflagellates and calcareous nannofossils, higher sulfur (1000-10000 ppm), TOC contents $(>1{\~}3{\%})$ and hydrogen index, and specific biomarkers such as dinostrane and $C_{30}$ 4-methyl steranes. Seismic facies, determined as a fairly continuous amplitude reflection, relatively parallel uniform strata, also provides a clue for recognizing marine transgressions during the Oligocene. Two 2nd--order stratigraphic cycles are observed in Oligocene strata based on well-log responses and the presence of microfossils. Each sequence comprises shallow marine deposits in the lower part and inner-outer neritic deposits in the upper part, thus showing a upward-deepening trend. In petroleum exploration point of view, the presence of marine strata would provide a better exploration potential for source rock and reservoir quality in the Cheju basin, offshore Korea.

The late Quaternary stratigraphy of the tidal deposits in the Hampyung Bay, southwestern coast of Korea comprises 1) Unit III (nonmarine fluvial coarse-grained sediments), 2) Unit II (late Pleistocene tidal deposits), and 3) Unit I (late Holocene fine-grained tidal deposits) in ascending order. The basements of the Hampyung Bay is composed of granitic rocks and basic dyke rocks. These three units are of unconformally bounded sedimentary sequences. The sequence boundary between Unit I and Unit II, in particular, seems to be significant suggesting erosional surface and exposed to the air under the cold climate during the LGM. The uppermost stratigraphic sequence (Unit I) is a common tidal deposit formed under the transgression to highstand sea-level during the middle to late Holocene.
Seismic stratigraphic analysis of the high resolution profiles obtained from the southeastern shelf of Korea divided the deposits into 4 sequences; 1) sequence D, 2) sequence C, 3) sequence B and 4) sequence A (Holocene sediments). Sequence D was deposited in shallow-water environment at west of the Yangsan Fault as the basin subsided. On the other hand, the eastern part was formed at the slope front. Landward part of the slope-front fill sediments were eroded and redeposited nearby slope due to the syndepositional tilting of the basin. This tilting probably resulted from the continuous closing of the Ulleung Basin. Sequence C is made of stacked successions of the lowstand fluvial sediments, transgressive sediments and marine highstand sediments derived from the paleo-river in the western part of the Yangsan Fault. Sequence C in the eastern part of the Yanshan Fault was formed at the shelf break. Progradation of the lowstand sediments resulted in broadening of the shelf. Sequence C in the eastern part was also tilted but the tilting was weaker than in Sequence D. During the formation of sequence B the tilting stopped and the point source instead of the line source started in both sides of the Yangsan Fault. Sequence B was composed of the highstand systems tract partially preserved around the Yokji island, lowstand systems tract mainly preserved in the Korea Trough and transgressive systems tract. After the stop of the tilting, the force of compression due to the closing of the Ulleung Basin may be released by the strike-slip faults instead of tilting.
