  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. • Lomilik Seamount in the west Pacific was seismically surveyed and photographed to illuminate the bottom topography, the condition of manganese crust, and the characteristics of sedimentary environment. Lomilik Seamount has a NW-SE elongated bottom topography with steep slopes in the NESW direction part. Even though the steep slopes of the seamount are devoid of deposits, the summit area and gentle slope of the seamount are covered with thick deposits. The seismic data indicate that Lomilik Seamount is a flat-topped and step-faulted guyot of volcanic origin. Deep-sea camera photographs show that much of the seafloor is rippled in symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns. The traces of biological activity were distinct on gentle seafloor suggesting the low-energy bottom conditions. Some photographs also show outcrops encrusted with manganese crusts. Sedimentary environments in the Lomilik Seamount appear have been governed by regional morphology and strong bottom current.

  • Sedimentological, geochemical, geophysical and micropaleontological analyses of 10 borehole cores were carried out to understand depositional environment and sequence stratigraphy of late Quaternary sedimentation in the estuary of the Nakdong River. Holocene Formation in study area is classified into five sedimentary units. Early Holocene freshwater lower pebbly sandy deposit(Unit I), lower muddy deposit(Unit II), middle thin sandy deposit(Unit III), upper muddy deposit(Unit VI), and upper sandy deposit(Unit V), in ascending order contolled by global sea-level change since interglacial period(about 15,000 yrs B.P.). Unit I deposited in erosional environments before marine trangression. Unit II and Unit VI composed of clay were deposited in cold and worm currents for marine trangression., respectively.

  • The spatial variability in the food chain structure of an estuary environment (Nanakita estuary, Japan) was investigated using fatty acid. Potential organic matter sources (terrestiral plants, macroalgae, benthic microalgae, dinflagellates and bacteria), sedimentary organic matters and benthic invertebrates (Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae) were sampled in four locations with different tidal flat type. The main objective of the present study was to determine the origin of sediment and the food sources of N. olivacea and Nereidae along with small-scale spatial variability. The origin of sedimentary organic matters were mainly the fatty acid of bacteria and benthic microalgae. Especially, The organic matter of terrestrial plant origin was found the highest in station C. The diets of N. olivacea and Nereidae were found to be dominated by diatoms and terrestrial plants. Whereas, macroalgae and dinoflagellates showed little influence to benthic invertebrates. Moreover, according to principal component analysis, it is showed that benthic invertebrates in the same region are using the same food without relation with species. On the other hand, the N. olivacea and Nereidae of station D clearly contrasts with station B in terms of main food sources. From these results, it is suggested that food competition of benthic invertebrates revealed high a connection between small-scale spatial variability and food source in estuary.

  • In september 2004 and 2006, topographical and sedimentological survey were carried out using multibeam echosounder, which were to investigate shape characteristics, temporal changes and control factors of the subaqueous dunes in the southern Gyeonggi Bay. The present tidal current and sedimentary characteristics of study area make conditions that the sizes (length and height) of large subaqueous dunes are developed and maintained sufficiently. The change of sedimentary characteristics over time, the decrease in grain size causes reduction in the height of very large subaqueous dunes. Therefore it shows that the grain size of surface sediments is a primary control factor in defining subaqueous dune sizes in the study area.

  • Researches onmarine terrace in Korea have been drastically progressed during the last two decades.main themes of researches include vertical and horizontal distribution of paleo-shoreline, sedimentary facies ofmarine terrace deposits, OSL dating of terrace deposits and estimation of uplift rate. At present, it is noted thatmarine terraces distributed at the same altitude do not always show the same sedimentary facies, nor have the same ages.marine terraces are generally divided into five terrace systems, of which ages increase in ascending order. There are some arguments about discrimination between 2nd and 3rd terrace systems and their age. The core discrepancy lies on the question of whether the level of the last interglacial terrace is on the level of about 20m or on the 30~35m(~40m) in altitude. The uplift rate based on the paleoshoreline distribution ranges between 0.10 and 0.20m/ka.

  • To increase the yield from groundwater wells in various rock types by hydrofracturing, tests of 12 wells were carried out as a part of sustainable groundwater development and artificial recharge project. Test wells are selected 5 wells in Jurassic granites, 2 wells in Cretaceous volcanics, 4 wells in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and one well in Pre-Cambrian gneiss. The results show that specific capacity of II wells increased about 7% to 366%, while a well in Cretaceous sedimentary rock decreased about 43.4% owing to plugging of fault clay. Meanwhile, impact distances influenced due to hydrofracturing ranged from 5.4 m to 82.7 m from the test wells, actual drawdown data measured during the pumping test after hydrofracturing are more or less decreased and reveals balanced drawdown.

  • The studied area occupies the southern part of Haenam peninsula located in the southwestern corner of Korea. The stratigraphic sequences of the area are grouped into following three units in ascending order. (1) Late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of Uhangri Formation which consist of the alternative beds of black shales and tuffaceous sediments, Hwangsan acidic fine grained tuffs and Jindo rhyolite flows. (2) Late Cretaceous biotite granite and acidic porphyries which intruded the Late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. (3) Tertiary(?) pitchstone. The study purposes to delineate any of geochemical aspects on the deposition of the sequences, the average amounts of organic materials and the effect to the maturation of hydrocarbonization which has been occured by the intrusives. Sixty nine black shale samples were collected from Uhangri Formation in the northern and southern coasts of the peninsula. Organic carbons, total extracted organic matters and hydrocarbons were mainly determined by the Soxhlet extraction method, together with C-H-N elemental analyses. Based on the field and laboratory studies, the following interpretations have been obtained. (1) The paleohydrostatic condition of the sedimentation which took place was relatively calm and stable to delineate a lacustrine environment. (2) The amounts of organic material were more or less constant throughout the period of the deposition of the sediments. (3) The degree of hydrocarbonization of the Uhangri Formation in the northern coast was taken place higher than that in the southern coast due to the differences of thermal effect by the biotite granite which is assumed to be as a heat source in the area. Among the northern coast, some black shales in Uhangri and Mogsam areas which had been under the most moderate temperature environment snow symptomatic oily material, whereas, those in Sinseongri area do not, which were presumably to be intensive thermal alteration by the later acidic porphyries.

  • Since 1970's, various satellite remote sensing technology has been developed and accumulation of observational data has been carried out, and coastal environment monitoring research is being conducted through analysis of relationship between satellite remote sensing data and coastal sedimentary environment. However, generation of coastal thematic maps by various national agencies are not included in the production of coastal themes using satellite imagery. In this study, we want to deduct the current problems through survey of marine spatial information provided by the government. The purpose of this study is to investigation the direction of the development of large scale coastal thematic maps by analyzing coastal boundary map, coastal topographic map and coastal sedimentary facies map.

  • Five core sediments acquired from the Lake Shihwa are analyzed for variations of sedimentary environment and heavy metal pollution after the Shihwa seawall construction. The depositional environment of the study area is divided into anoxic, oxic and mixed suboxic conditions based on the C/N ratio and C/S ratios of organic matters. Controlling factors for redox condition are the water depth and the difference in industrial effluents supply. Correlations among geochemical elements (Mn, U, Mo) show a distinctive difference and thus can be used as an indicator of redox condition. The content of Al, Ti are dependent on the sediment characteristics, and the contents of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) indicate heavy metal pollution. The concentrations of heavy metals are higher near Shiswa-Banwol industrial complexies than the central part of Lake Shihwa. Especially, the accumulation of the heavy metal at the surface sediments near Shihwa-Banwol industrial complex are two to eight times higher than in the center of Lake Shihwa.
