The purpose of this study was to suggest the alternative measures to properly manage the water quality of Lake Euiam, Chuncheon. Current pollution level of Gongji stream (influent to Lake Euiam) and sources of contamination in Lake Euiam were investigated. Particle size, organic matter and nutrient contents, heavy metals were analyzed for sediment samples taken from lower region of Gongji stream. Average organic matter content of nine sediment samples was 5.7%, and for nitrogen and phosphorus it was 750 mg/kg and 977mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metals including aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc were measured, whereas Cd and As were not detected. Effluent from Chuncheon Wastewater Treatment Plant appeared to be one of the main cause of organic matter and nutrients level in Lake Euiam. Inhibition of primary production and consequent reduction of organic matter content within the Lake should be a key measure to protect the water quality of Lake Euiam. Preventive measures to reduce the level of nutrients in wastewater treatment effluent were found necessary.
To examine the characteristics of the nutrient release from the sediments in two reservoirs, Lake Paldang and Lake Cheungpyeung, we analyzed physical and chemical properties of the sediments and calculated the nutrient release rates from the sediments. The particle properties of sediments in Lake Paldang changed from silt to sand after summer rainy season, especially in the water area of the Kyeungan River where the water depth was shallow and the width of river was narrow. The sediments in Lake Cheungpyeung had higher contents of silt and clay than in Lake Paldang, and the particle size was not much different before and after rainfall. The release rates of nutrients in two lakes varied with the kind of nutrients and the season. The release rates of DTN and ${NH_4}^+-N$ in Lake Paldang were faster in spring than autumn. But the Lake Cheungpyeung showed similar values of release rates before and after summer rainy season. ${NO_3}^--N$ and phosphorous were not released from sediments or were absorbed into sediments all the time in two lakes. Compared with other lakes, the sediments of two lakes consisted of bigger particles and had a lower organic matters content than other lake-type reservoirs. Due to the short hydraulic retention time and no stratification throughout the year in Lake Paldang and Lake Cheungpyeung, the release rates of nutrients from sediment in these reservoirs were lower than other lakes and this seems to be a typical characteristic of river-type reservoirs.

The effects of several factors including organic pigment blending and calending conditions on the surface and optical properties of coated paper were investigated. When clay and calcium carbonate are blended in the ratio of 7 to 3, highest smoothness and relative sediment volume were obtained. When organic pigments were added to the mixture of clay and calcium carbonate, the relative sediment volume did not changed significantly. However, when organic pigments were added to calcium carbonate, sheet gloss and smoothness were improved, and showed the better results than that obtained from the mixture of organic pigment and clay. When organic pigment is blended with clay, the particles of organic pigment are buried in the packing structure of coating layer. However, the particle shape of calcium carbonate is quite different from that of clay, and the aspect ratio of calcium carbonate is similar to that of organic pigment. Thus organic pigment particles are not buried and improved effectively the physical characteristics of coating layer. When the hollow sphere pigment was blended, opacity and sheet gloss were improved significantly. Even though the coating color applied was reduced, the similar level of opacity was maintained. Also, if particle size and void volume are increased, gloss is improved, because coating layer is easily transformed in calendering. Therefore, even though lower pressure was applied during calendering, the smoothness of surface of coating layer was improved, and the decrease of void volume in coating layer was reduced, and the quality of coated sheet can be improved.

In this paper, as a basic research for the restoration and construction of easuary saltmarsh, To observe the habitat environment for reed, we observed sediment environment (Particle size, water content, pH, nutrient analysis ($NH_4-N$, $PO_4-P$)), ground water level, ground level, individual numbers of reed, maximum reed height. As a result of this study, sediment particle size and moisture content of soil on the study area not effected reed habitat, pH showed no difference in each site. $NH_4-N$ and $PO_4-P$ concentration also no difference in each site. Ground level of reed habitat area is more higher than none reed habitat. However Ground water level of reed habitat area is more lower than none reed habitat. As a results of analyzing the influence factors for reed habitat in Nakdong estuary saltmarsh, ground water level and ground level is most influenced factor for reed habitat.
We surveyed physico-chemical properties of bottom water and sediment to evaluate the influence of sediment on the eutrophication in the downstream of Nagdong River from 1998 to 2000. From May to August, DO concentration of bottom waters dropped below 5 mg $O_2/l$ and $NH_4\;^+$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$ concentrations significantly increased in the bottom waters, resulting in the great differences between surface and bottom waters. Fluxes across water-sediment interface would be substantially active in this period. The serial orders of the water fertility or eutrophication were Joman River > Sonagdong River > Nagdong River. The organic nutrient contents of sediment increased toward the lower parts of the river system. Organic contents of the sediment would be under the influence of water pollution and exhibited a negative correlation with sediment bulk-density or particle size. The concentrations of exchangeable inorganic nutrients of sediment were greater than those of pore waters, and $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $NH_4\;^+$ and $SiO_2$ increased along the sediment depth. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NO_3\;^-$ concentrations of the pore water were less than the overlying waters, while NH4+ and $SiO_2$ concentrations showed opposite trends. Exchangeable nutrients of sediment could be the repository for t]me nutrient exchange in the water-sediment interface.

For the systematic scientific management of tidal flat sediment in Julpo bay of Korea, this study conducted a survey of particle composition, organic matter(l.L) and heavy metals for three lines ; including F, R and L lines in tidal flat sediment. Particle composition of tidal flat sediments consisted predominantly of clay at F line which was in right angle direction to the coast, whereas R and L lines were located horizontally along the coast and consisted predominantly of silt. Mean grain size values of tidal flat sediments were in the range of 3.7 ${\phi}{\sim}$10.4 ${\phi}$(average 7${\phi}$). The contents of heavy metals observed at R and L lines were lower than those at F line. The correlation analysis among heavy metals, organic matter and particle size was found to have a good interrelationship. For the evaluation of heavy metals pollution, two criteria of US NOAA and KEI(in Korea) were applied Heavy metals pollution level of tidal flat sediments belonged in Non polluted and Moderately polluted groups in US EPA criteria, and its pollution levels sat below ERL in NOAA criteria. The results of heavy metals pollution level obtained by KEI criteria were found to be less than the goal level.
In this research a suspended solid transport experiment was conducted in the river experiment center to find the characteristics and dispersion of the material. Modeling by the particle dispersion model was also executed to reproduce the suspended solid transport. The suspended solid was consisted of a mixture of silica and water using a mixing equipment, which was then introduced into a real-scale flume and measured with the laser-diffraction based particle size analyzer(LISST) to find the concentration of the material. The comparison between the measured suspended solid concentration using drone images and particle size analyzers, with the model showed a good match overall, which proved the applicability of the model. Along with finding the model applicability, the research showed the potential for suspended solid estimation in high flow situations with high rainfall.

A drilling exploration in deep sea is being processed to develop new energy resource in the world. In 2007, the presence of the gas hydrate had been confirmed during the UBGH1 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 1) in the Ulleung Basin. Geotechnical properties of the deep marine sediment are important factors for assessing the safety of gas production facility and productivity from the hydrate bearing sediment. In this study, comprehensive laboratory tests are conducted to investigate the geotechnical engineering characteristics of the deep marine sediments recovered from the hydrate occurrence regions during the UBGH2 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 2) in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Korea. The index properties of the specimens including the specific gravity, atterberg limits, specific surface, and particle size distribution are measured, and these are compared to the results reported by previous studies. A zero-lateral strain cell, which houses bender elements, is used to determine stress-dependant characteristics and shear wave velocities with the vertical effective stresses. Furthermore, the hydraulic conductivity is calculated based on the consolidation test results.

Rapid geomorphic changes occur in Nakdong River deltaic coast which is composed of deltaic barrier islands and tidal flats. We investigate the pattern of these rapid geomorphic changes by analyzing the distributions of sediment grain size characteristics. The distributions of sediment grain size characteristics analysis is a very efficient method to explain geomorphic changes of deltaic barrier islands. In sediments from Jinwoo Island, Sinja Island, and Doyo Island which are composed of Nakdong River deltaic coast, mean particle size increases to onshore direction and become coarser in tidal inlets. All sediments are very well sorted. Though almost sediments show little negative skewness, several sediments from tidal inlets show negative skewness. These results provide that the stronger and more regular energies affect Nakdong River deltaic coast and make fine sediments selectively move toward tidal inlets. Because of this mechanism, the recurved spits of deltaic barrier islands enlarge.
Total suspended solids (TSS), settleable suspended solids (SSS) and nonsettleable suspended solids (NSSS) were compared in streams and lakes during rain events. Samples were collected in Lake Soyang and nine agricultural streams during storm events over two years. To measure NSSS, samples were settled in 1 L cylinders for one hour and then 50% of the total sample volume was taken from the center of the cylinder. The SSS/TSS ratio in streams (0.50) was higher than in Lake Soyang (0.20). The ratio of TSS to turbidity decreased from 1.21 in the inflowing river to 0.69 in the reservoir outlet. Turbidity and NSSS showed higher correlation ($r^2$=0.82) compared with the correlation between turbidity and TSS ($r^2$=0.66). Median particle size decreased from $11.4\;{\mu}m$ in the inflowing river to $4.2\;{\mu}m$ in the lake outlet. The results indicate that only fine particles of less than $5{\sim}10\;{\mu}m$ can be transported downstream of the lake. Because fast-flowing water in streams includes not only fine particles but also coarse particles, an overestimation of suspended sediment concentration results if only TSS is measured. Consequently, TSS and NSSS should be measured separately to evaluate the effect of suspend sediment loadings of turbid streams on aquatic habitat during the monsoon season.
