In-situ collection experiments were performed to analyze inflowing sedilnents behavior as a basic study of topographical change in Nakdong River Estuary. Sediment rate and bed load flux ranged from 0.0004 to $0.472\;g/cm^2/day\;and\;0.0005\~1.7579\;g/cm^2/day$, respectively. The settling velocity of suspended particulate matter was estimated in tire range of $0.339\~1.010\;cm/sec$, The grain size analysis shows that surface sediments in backside of sandbar and bed load in front of dike have a similar grain size distribution. It is considered that the source of surface sediments in backside of sandbar were flowed in from Nakdong River. In order to verify the characteristics of inflowing sediments behavior, detailed surveys around Nakdong River Estuary need to be carried out, continuously.

Entrainment and deposition experiments were counducted in fresh water on four groups of sediments: three well-defined sediments of uniform composition and narrow-size distribution (1 to 9 um, 10 to 50 um, and 50 to 90 um), and a fourth group which was a mixture of these three sediments. In the entrainment experiments and at a particular stress, the steady-state suspended sediment concentration of the coarse group was the lowest while the concentrations of the fine and medium groups were higher that that of the coarse group but were similar to each other. Deposition experiments generally showed an exponential decrease of suspended sediment concentration with time with the decay time being a function of particle size and applied stress.
A 2-dimensional numerical sediment transport model has been developed by using erosion rates observed by SEDFLUME. The model un boundary-fitted coordinate can reduce inaccuracy of sediment model with accurate erosion data. Suspended transport and bed load transport are included in the model together. The model results gave good agreement with particle size distributions in 1-d channel and was more accurate than that of HIDAS of 1-dimensional model. The model applied to an enlarging channel to check model performance in 2-dimensional domain. Bed coarsening reduced erosion and deposition.
Cohesive sediments form flocs through the flocculation process. The size and density of floc are variable whereas those of a fine sediment are always assumed to be constant. The settling velocity, one of main factors of sediment transport, is determined by size and density of particle. Therefore, the flocculation process plays an important role in transport of cohesive sediment. It is of great difficulty to directly measure the density of floc in the field due to technical limitation at present. It is a popular approach to estimate the density of floc by applying the fractal theory. The main assumption of fractal theory is the self-similarity. This study aims to examine the applicability of fractal theory to cohesive sediment in small rivers of Korea. Sampling sediment has been conducted in two different basins of Geum river and Yeongsan river. The results of settling experiments using commercial camera show that the sediment in Geum river basin follows the main concept of fractal theory whereas the sediment in Yeongsan river basin does not have a clear relationship between floc size and fractal dimension. It is known from this finding that the fractal theory is not easily applicable under the condition that the cohesive sediment includes the high content of organic matter.

In this study, sediment cores were sampled from tidal flats (six sites) in the west and south coastal wetlands, the blue carbon stock in the tidal flat sediments was calculated, and the blue carbon stock characteristics and influencing factors were analyzed. The sediment particle size of the west coastal tidal flats was larger than that of the south coastal tidal flats, and the organic carbon content in the south coastal tidal flats was more than twice that of the west coastal tidal flats. Blue carbon stock per unit area was 28.4~36.8 Mg/ha on the west coastal tidal flats and 69.8~89.8 Mg/ha on the south coastal tidal flats, which was more than twice higher in the south coastal tidal flats than in the west coastal tidal flats. The total amount of blue carbon stock in the tidal flats was the highest in Suncheon Bay tidal flats at 153,626 Mg, and followed by Gomso Bay tidal flats at 141,750 Mg, Hampyeong Bay tidal flats at 58,420 Mg, Dongdae Bay tidal flats at 44,900 Mg, Cheonsu Bay tidal flats at 36,880 Mg, and Jinhae Bay tidal flats at 26,205 Mg. Blue carbon stock per unit area was higher in the south coastal tidal flats, but the total amount of blue carbon stock in the tidal flats was higher in the west coast. The slope of the regression function of blue carbon stock with respect to the organic carbon content in the tidal flat sediments was estimated to be about 0.05 to 0.07, and the slope of the regression function was higher in the west coastal tidal flats than in the south coastal tidal flats.
order to investigate physical characteristics and element concentrations of sediments, coastal bottom sediments were collected at 20 stations in the vicinity of Youngkwang Nuclear Power Plant. After air drying of samples in the laboratory. article size distribution was examined by Master sizer (X-350F), radio-activity by HPGe ${\gamma}$-spectrphotometer, and element concentrations by ICP-AES and AAS. According to particle size analysis , sediments are mainly composed of silt fraction weith 23% of sand, 65% of silt and 12% of clay on average. Most sediments are derived from muddy environment that silt dominates with the characteristics of 5.3${\varsigma}$ mean particle size, poorly sorted, very fine skewed and lepto-kurtic. Only two sediments are well sorted with sandy silt owing to wind, winnowing action, tide and current andits complex reactions. Element concentrations in the coastal bottom sediments are relatively high at finer sediment and show significant relationship with grain size. Index of geoaccumulation by heavy metals at every sampling station is classified as practically unpolluted. The radioactivities of the sediments were measured for 15 isotope elements, and 2 elements of K-40 and Cs-137 were detected in most sediments. The K-40 is the natural nuclide and the artificial nuclide of Cs-137 was thought to be derived from the fallout of past nuclear weapon test. The results of correlation coefficient between grain size and radioactivity shows that the activity of Cs-137 significantly increases in finer grain.

Nakdong estuary is located at south-eastern coast of the Korea. A lot of sediment from upper river was deposited at this area. It has caused many problems such as changes in topography and tidal current. In this paper, field observation data on tidal currents and sediments were investigated as well as historical topographic changes by dredging and reclamation of the foreshore. Then, the numerical model considered the settling velocity of the suspended solids according to the particle size was applied to examine the characteristic of deposition. The results are as follows : 1. Changes of characteristics of deposition were caused by topographic changes of Nakdong estuary 2. Characteristics of deposition were influenced by river plume and tidal currents. 3. Numerical model which considers settling velocity reappeared distribution of deposition by particle-size. 4. Used model is only resonable for discussion in the quality, so, it is strongly suggested that the new model development is needed including the quatitative deposition processes.
Large artificial dam reservoirs and associated downstream ecosystems are under increased pressure from long-term negative impacts of turbid flood runoff. Despite various emerging issues of reservoir turbidity flow, turbidity modeling studies have been rare due to lack of experimental data that can support scientific interpretation. Modeling suspended sediment (SS) dynamics, and therefore turbidity ($C_T$), requires provision of constitutive relationships ($SS-C_T$) and accounting for deposition of different SS size fractions/types distribution in order to display this complicated dynamic behavior. This study explored the performance of a coupled two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic and particle dynamics model that simulates the fate and transport of a turbid density flow in a negatively buoyant density flow regime. Multiple groups of suspended sediment (SS), classified by the particle size and their site-specific $SS-C_T$ relationships, were used for the conversion between field measurements ($C_T$) and model state variables (SS). The 2D model showed, in overall, good performance in reproducing the reservoir thermal structure, flood propagation dynamics and the magnitude and distribution of turbidity in the stratified reservoir. Some significant errors were noticed in the transitional zone due to the inherent lateral averaging assumption of the 2D hydrodynamic model, and in the lacustrine zone possibly due to long-term decay of particulate organic matters induced during flood runoffs.
A total of 116 surface sediment samples were obtained on the Yellow Sea and analyzed for grain size and geochemical elements in order to interpret the present sediment transportation. Thirty-nine cores and 3,070 line-km shallow seismic profiles are analyzed for sedimentary records of Yellow Sea in the past. Results show that the boundary of sediment transport between Korean side and Chinese side is about between $123^{\circ}E$ and $124^{\circ}E$. The similar result is produced from Shi et al. (in this publication). Two cyclonic patterns of surface sediments are recognized in the northeastern and southwestern Yellow Sea, while the strong front zone of the mud patch and sandy sediments are found in the southeastern Yellow Sea (the southwestern part of Korean coasts). The formation of fine-particle sediment packages, called for Northwest Mudbelt Deposit (NWMD), Hucksan Mudbelt Deposit (HSMD) and Jeju Mudbelt Deposit (JJMD), are resulted from eddies (gyres) of water circulations in the Yellow Sea. NWMD has been formed by cyclonic (anticlockwise) eddy. NWMD is composed of thick, homogeneous, relatively semi-consolidated gray clay-dominated deposit. On the other hand, HSMD and JJMD are formed by anticyclonic (clockwise) eddies. They are thick, homogeneous, organic-rich gray, silt-dominated deposit. Both core and surface sediments show that the middle zone across Chinese and Korean side contains bimodal frequency of grain-size distribution, indicating that two different transport mechanisms exist. These mud packages are surrounded by sand deposits from both Korea and China seas, indicating that Yellow Sea, which is the shallow sea and epicontinental shelf, is formed mostly by sand deposits including relict sands. The seismic profiles show such as small erosional/non-depositional channels, sand-ridges and sand-waves, Pleistocene-channelfilled deposits, a series of channels in the N-S major channel system, and thick Holocene sediment package, indicating that more complex sedimentary history exists in the Yellow Sea.
The effect of roasting on particle size distribution, water-holding capacity, and viscosity of sunsik was investigated in this study using non-roasted one as control. Roasting increased the size of particles in sunsik, in particular, particles larger than $1{\mu}m$ in diameter, indicating that roasted sunsik is likely to sediment faster, thereby decreasing the time to maintain dispersibility when mixing with water. Roasting also increased the water-holding capacity of sunsik, indicating that polymerization occurred greater than a pyrolysis during roasting, leading to increased viscosity in roasted sunsik. These results indicate that the roasting affected the dispersibility and viscosity of sunsik by increasing particle size and water-holding capacity, respectively.
