  • Intake E-CVVT noise, generally caused by collision sound of roller and cage clearance at idle and driving condition, is considerable source of annoyance in passenger cars using the gasoline engine. Main source of this noise is the cam torque variation of an intake E-CVVT system, and can be controlled by clearance decrease such as backlash reduction, but which may increase the manufacturing cost. Thus in this paper, most effective solution for low noise intake E-CVVT was achieved through not only reduction of backlash and cam angular acceleration but also improvement of vehicle transfer system, which is optimal configuration through acoustic sensitivity optimization of engine mount support bracket.

  • Sound transmission from the luggage comparment into the car cabin is important in the viewpoint if exhaust and road noises of passenger cars. In this paper, acoustic modal coupling between passenger and luggage compartments through loudspeaker holes at parcel shelf is dealt with for a sedan type passenger car with rigid rear seat. For these purposes, a half-scaled model car is tested and computed by the indirect BEM. Predicted acoustic transfer functions are compared with experimental ones and they agree reasonably well. It is found that the fore-aft resonance frequencies of the passenger cavity in the absence of coupling holes are tend to shift to higher frequencies when the luggage compartment is coupled to the passenger cavity.

  • The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) utilized in Honda's Civic Hybrid Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system was developed with the aim of making every component lighter, more compact and more efficient than those in the former model. To reduce energy loss, inverter efficiency was increased by fine patterning of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) chips, 12V DC-DC converter efficiency was increased by utilizing soft-switching, and the internal resistance of the IMA battery was lowered by modifying the electrodes and the current collecting structure. These improvements reduced the amount of heat generated by the unit components and made it possible to combine the previously separated Power Control Unit (PCU) and battery cooling systems into a single system. Consolidation of these two cooling circuits into one has reduced the volume of the newly developed IPU by 42% compared to the former model.

  • A noise transfer function(NTF) is the frequency response function between an input force applied to an exterior point of a vehicle body and the resultant interior sound pressure usually measured at the driver's ear position. It represents the measure of noise sensitivity for the output force transmitted to the joints between the body and chassis. The principle of vibro-acoustic reciprocity is often utilized in the measurement of NTF. One difficulty in using the volume source is that most of the previously proposed methods require the knowledge of the volume velocity of the acoustic source in advance. A new method proposed in the present work does not require any calculation related with the volume velocity of the acoustic source, but still yields even more accurate results both in the amplitude and phase of the NTF. In the present work, the new method is applied to obtain NTF data for a midsize sedan.

  • The Shinmoongo (Shinmoon-drum) system is known as the last means of petition, appeal, and, denunciation during the Chosun dynasty. The purpose of this study is first to examine the system's origin and changes of its function and operation. The study further looks at several issues around the striking gong system, an alternative appealing method, and its background and transition. Introduced by King Taejong, the Shinmoongo was a kind of the press (or communication) system which was intended to deliver various cases of personal appeal, social petition, national denunciation, etc. Since the 2nd year of King Sejong, the system had been changed into the legal system which mainly to settle personal mortifying problem. Originally, the system was institutionalized for the common people who were hard to appeal their mortifying affairs to the supervisory administration. This reporting system to a superior was utilized as an institutional device to remedy abuses from 'complaint to the King near his sedan chair' and 'direct complaint out of order' during the early disordered years of Chosun dynasty. The system was often abused for the devices of private interest by illustrious officials. Meanwhile, it carried out a role of checking power abuses of provincial governors and magistrates. There were many obstacles for the common people and lowly people to turn to the means. The drum was located at the palace of capitol, less accessible for most people at the time. The petition had to be processed through several steps in written forms. The punishment on a false drummer was heavy. It inhibited any appeal concerning the superior under the rigorous caste system. The Shinmoongo system is regarded as a legitimate press system. Also, it is taken as informal or semi-official press system such as 'document to send around', 'document for agitation', 'joint petition', 'striking gong to complain', 'complaint to the King near his sedan chair', 'scream to complain', etc. Connecting together, the tools resulted in the increase of regal power and decrease of divine authority.

  • Due to the rapid urbanization, various traffic problems such as traffic jams during commute and regular traffic jams are occurring. In order to solve these traffic problems, it is necessary to quickly and accurately estimate and analyze traffic volume. ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) is a system that performs optimal traffic management by utilizing the latest ICT (Information and Communications Technology) technologies, and research has been conducted to analyze fast and accurate traffic volume through various techniques. In this study, we proposed a deep learning-based vehicle detection method using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) video for real-time traffic analysis with high accuracy. The UAV was used to photograph orthogonal videos necessary for training and verification at intersections where various vehicles pass and trained vehicles by classifying them into sedan, truck, and bus. The experiment on UAV dataset was carried out using YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once V3), a deep learning-based object detection technique, and the experiments achieved the overall object detection rate of 90.21%, precision of 95.10% and the recall of 85.79%.

  • Recently, the driver can be assisted by the advanced active safety devices such as ADAS from road traffic risks. With this system, driver and passenger may freed from can driving tasks or kept eyes on forward direction while on the road. Help from adoptive cruise control, auto parking and newly develped automated driving vehicles technologies, the driver positions will vary significantly from the current standard driver position during the travel time. On this hypothesis, the objective of this study is analyze the behavior and injuries of drivers in the event of frontal impact under these abnormal driver position. Based on the KNCAP frontal impact testing method, this simulation matrix was set-up with dummies of 5 th tile female Hybrid III dummy and 50 th tile male Hybrid III dummy. The small sedan type passenger car was modeled in this simulation. The series of simulation was performed to compare the injuries and behaviour of each dummy, varying the seating status and seat position of each dummy.

  • Vehicle simulation models for noise and vibration prediction have been developed so far generally in two schemes. One is FE models generally used for problems below 200 Hz such as booming noise, and the other is SEA models for high frequencies of more than 1 kHz, representatively related to sound packages. There have been many researches to develop a simulation model for 200~1000 Hz, so-called mid-frequency region, and this paper shows one practical result that covers the trimmed body of a sedan vehicle. The simulation model is developed based on an FE model, and then FE elements at some areas are substituted with SEA elements to reduce DOFs. SEA panels are described by modal density, radiation efficiency, stiffness and damping characteristics that are found from some numerical assessments. Sound packages are modeled similarly as a conventional SEA model. The results obtained from the hybrid model were compared to experimental results. Predicted pressure and vibrational velocity generally show a good agreement. The developed simulation model and related technology are successfully being used in vehicle development process.

  • In this study, there is an investigation about the sound quality of automotive horn that attached to luxury sedans. In order to define a questionnaire of horn sound quality the factor analysis is conducted. Ten automotive horns are selected for this research and ten passenger cars(nine is luxury sedan and one economy class car). Luxury is used for the questionnaire as an attribute for the sound quality of car horn. The interior noises for ten test cars are recorded and used for the subjective analysis of car horn sound. In the paper, new sound metric for the car horn sound is presented. The new sound metric is used for the objective sound index for the prediction of subjective sound quality of car horn.
