  • Amid intensified global competition, securing high technologies is becoming a prerequisite towards achieving developed nation status. Korea has made tremendous efforts into developing technologies for decades and it has now obtained a leading position in many fields. As a result, however, Korea has become a major target of industrial espionage and not a few Korean businesses have already suffered from it. In order to effectively counter industrial espionage, this research explores the use of polygraph security screening as an internal control method through literature review, and discusses matters which need to be considered before the introduction of it into Korea, focusing on the accuracy of security screening. Since polygraph security screening generates deterrent effect by increasing certainty and celerity of punishment, it makes a valuable contribution to the control of industrial espionage. However, the most important problem with the use of the polygraph in security screening is errors of the examination. Thus, polygraph security screening should be used as a part of comprehensive security management program to reduce the possibility of errors. In addition, because factors such as countermeasures and examiner's experience are known to influence the accuracy of the examination, the issues surrounding them should also be addressed.

  • Nuclear Power Plant Instrumentation and Control System(NPP I&C) which is used to operate safely is changing from analog technology to digital technology. Ever since NPP Centrifuge of Iran Bushehr was shut down by Stuxnet attack in 2010, the possibility of cyber attacks against the NPP has been increasing. However, the domestic and international regulatory guidelines that was published to strengthen the cyber security of the NPP I&C describes security requirements and method s to establish policies and procedures. These guidelines are not appropriate for the development of real applicable cyber security technology. Therefore, specialized cyber security technologies for the NPP I&C need to be developed to enhance the security of nuclear power plants. This paper proposes a cyber security technology development system which is exclusively for the development of nuclear technology. Furthermore, this method has been applied to the ESF-CCS developed by The KINCS R&D project.

  • Malware analysis is one of the important concerns of computer security, and advances in analysis techniques have become important for computer security. In the past, the signature-based method was used to detect malware. However, as the percentage of packed malware increased, it became more difficult to detect using the conventional method. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying packers of packed programs using machine learning. The proposed method parses the packed program to extract specific PE information that can identify the packer and identifies the packer using the Adaptive Boosting algorithm among the machine learning models. To verify the accuracy of the proposed method, we collected and tested 391 programs packed with 12 types of packers and found that the packers were identified with an accuracy of about 99.2%. In addition, we presented the results of identification using PEiD, a signature-based PE identification tool, and existing machine learning method. The proposed method shows better performance in terms of accuracy and speed in identifying packers than existing methods.

  • A Protection Profile(PP) is a common security and assurance requirements for a specific class of Information Technology security products such as firewall and smart card. A PP should be included "TOE(Target of Evaluation) Security Environment", which is consisted of subsections: assumptions, treat, organizational security policies. This paper presents a new threats statement generation method for developing TOE security environment section of PP. Our survey guides the statement of threats in CC(Common Criteria) scheme through collected and analysed hundred of threat statements from certified and published real PPs and CC Tool Box/PKB that is included a class of pre-defined threat and attack statements. From the result of the survey, we present a new asset classification method and propose a threats statement generation model. The former is a new asset classification method, and the later is a production rule for a well formed statement of threats.

  • In order for agencies and companies at the IT service industry to check as well as to upgrade the current status of their information security programs, this paper suggests the assessment method for information security levels. The study developed 12 assessment fields and 54 assessment items derived from domestic and foreign cases including SP800-26, SP800-53, ISMS, and ISO27001. It categorized 54 assessment items into 5 levels for determining information security levels. Also, the study presents 7 strategies for performing their efficient evaluations. The proposed method and process in this paper can be useful guidelines for improving the national information security level.

  • Currently, there are various security methods in smart phone. Among them, pin number and pattern lock were used long as they were used from early smart phone. However, security is weak that much. The security of pin number is slightly high, but the security of conventional pattern lock remains moderate. However, the conventional pattern lock is still used by several people because of convenience. This is because some users' smart phones don't support biometric security. The most convenient security method for devices that don't support biometric security is pattern lock. However, this method is vulnerable to shoulder surfing attack and smudge attack. Therefore, we introduce random pattern lock that solves the vulnerability of the conventional pattern lock while maintaining the convenience of the pattern lock. This is a lock method that places each point placed on the screen in a circular shape and assigns a random number to it. Therefore, If this is introduced, It's expected to solve vulnerability.

  • A side-channel attack is a method of attacking a cipher based on physical information of a cryptographic device. The masking method, which is a typical method overcoming this attack, is a method of calculating an arbitrary masking value at the round intermediate value through rounds. Thus, it is difficult to guess the intermediate value by the side-channel attack, but if the masking operation is applied to all rounds of the encryption algorithm, the encryption process may become overloaded. Therefore, it is practical to use a reduced-round masking technique that applies a masking technique to only a part of the cipher for lightweight equipment such as Internet of Things(IoT) and wearable devices. In this paper, we describe a Hamming weight filtering for SIMON family with reduced-round masking technique and it is shown that first round key recovery is possible through actual programming.

  • Recognizing license plate from its traffic camera captured images is one of the most important aspects in many traffic management systems. Despite many sophisticated license plate recognition related algorithms available online, license plate recognition is still a hot research issue because license plates in each country all round the world lack of uniform format and their camera captured images are often affected by multiple adverse factors, such as low resolution, poor illumination effects, installation problem etc. A novel method is proposed in this paper to solve the inclination problem of license plates in their camera captured images through four parts: Firstly, special edge pixels of license plate are chosen to represent main information of license plates. Secondly, least square methods are used to compute the inclined angle of license plates. Then, coordinate rotation methods are used to rotate the license plate. At last, bilinear interpolation methods are used to improve the performance of license plate rotation. Several experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method can solve the inclination problem about license plate in visual aspect and can improve the recognition rate when used as the image preprocessing method.

  • Differential Power Analysis (DPA) based on the statistical characteristics of collected signals has been known as an efficient attack for uncovering secret key of crypto-systems. However, the attack performance of this method is affected very much by the temporal misalignment and the noise of collected side channel signals. In this paper, we propose a new method based on wavelet analysis to surmount the temporal misalignment and the noise problem simultaneously in DPA. The performance of the proposed method is then evaluated while analyzing the power consumption signals of Micro-controller chips during a DES operation. The experimental results show that our proposed method based on wavelet analysis requires only 25% traces compared with those of the previous preprocessing methods to uncover the secret key.

  • A side channel analysis is a very efficient attack against small devices such as smart cards and wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose an efficient key detection method using a peak selection algorithm in order to find the advanced encryption standard secret key from electromagnetic signals. The proposed method is applied to a correlation electromagnetic analysis (CEMA) attack against a wireless sensor node. Our approach results in increase in the correlation coefficient in comparison with the general CEMA. The experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently and reliably uncover the entire 128-bit key with a small number of traces, whereas some extant methods can reveal only partial subkeys by using a large number of traces in the same conditions.
