The Job Satisfaction and Self-assessment of Public Health Nutritionists (보건 영양사의 직무만족도 및 자기진단평가)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the general characteristics of public health nutritionists, the current status of nutrition services operation, the recognition about nutrition services of public health center related man power, the job satisfaction and self-assessment and the need for a retraining course of public health nutritionists. The subjects were 58 public health nutritionists who responded to the questionnaire distributed at the annual retraining program in 1998. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) 46.5% of the nutritionists were 26-30 years old, 62.1% were 4 year university graduates 74.1% were food and nutrition majors and 51.7% were daily workers. 2) Among the public health center-related manpower, the recognition about nutrition services was the highest for the manager of family health section, followed by the head of public health centers, and then the general nurse in public health centers. 3) The ranking of the reasons for job satisfaction of the public health nutritionists was, relationship with colleagues(3.84), inhabitants response after nutrition counselling(3.53), specialized value realization/conviction about duty(3.35), contents of the work(3.10), value achievement(3.08), self achievement/development(3.00), self discretion(2.92), participation in policy decisions(2.90), work load(2.75), chance of retraining and acquisition of new information(2.73), working environment(2.69), supervisio $n^port by superiors(2.67), salary(2.38), supply of necessary education material, technique(2.37), and budget security(2.22). 4) The satisfaction of the inhabitant's responses after nutrition counseling was the highest among the 4 year university graduates(p<0.05), the satisfaction of the specialized value realization/conviction about duty was the highest among the nutritionists 26-30 years old(p<0.05). Food and nutrition majors(p<0.05) and those having worked less than 3-5years at public health centers also showed much satisfaction(p<0.05). Satisfaction with the salary was the lowest among the food and nutrition majors(p<0.01) and daily workers(p<0.001). The satisfaction with the participation in policy decisions was the lowest among the daily workers(p<0.01). 5) The ranking for the level of self-assessment were, nutrition and dietetic practice(2.92), communication(2.80), management(2.77), public health science and practice(2.66)(p<0.01). The general characteristics such as the level of education, major, employment condition, current public health center's tenure, and charge experience of the nutrition guidance work were not significantly related to self-assessment except the management part(p<0.05). The higher the satisfaction of specialized value realization/conviction about the duty, the better the total score on the self-assessment(p<0.05)..

Survey of the Major Selection by and Occupational Consciousness of Freshmen Majoring in Dental Hygiene (일부 치위생과 신입생의 전공선택과 직업의식에 관한 조사연구)

  • Background: The selection of an occupation is typically based on individuals' personalities and the characteristics of occupations, which significantly affect occupational consciousness. The present study aimed to enhance the occupational achievement level of and provide fundamental data for student counseling in order to develop competitive professional workers by understanding the occupational consciousness of freshmen and motivating them as dental hygienists with career development plans, as freshmen majoring in dental hygiene eventually play a significant role in the field of dentistry as dental hygienists. Methods: The surveys were distributed to 160 freshmen in the dental hygiene department and were subsequently collected. The data from 142 surveys were used for analysis, as 18 surveys were excluded due to insincere responses. The survey contents included questions related to major selection and satisfaction, including motives for selecting a dental hygiene major, prior knowledge on a dental hygiene major and a career as a dental hygienist, satisfaction level of the major, and reasons for dissatisfaction in cases if applicable, as well as questions related to occupational consciousness, including career prospects for dental hygienists, opinions on the occupation, and conditions of job selection. Results: High employment rate with good salary level ranked highest (43.7%) among motives to apply the dental hygiene major, followed by the desire to be a professional worker (21.1%) and recommendation by acquaintances. Of those who responded, 50.7% indicated a normal level of satisfaction with the major, and 69.9% responded that they had prior knowledge regarding the dental hygiene major and/or field of dental hygiene. These results may be due to youth unemployment and the occurrence of job preparation immediately after students enter university, which is a result of the difficulty in job seeking. In terms of career prospects, 48.6% of students responded with "growing a little bit," followed by "growing a lot" (28.9%), "no difference from now" (21.1%), and "other" (1.4%). Regarding opinions on the occupation, 65.5% responded that occupation was an tool with which to make and income or a living, 23.2% responded that occupation was for dreams and self-realization, and 11.3% responded that occupation was for success in life and maintaining social status. Regarding the conditions of job selection, the responses included that the workplace had good working conditions (39.4%), good interpersonal relationships (21.8%), and a higher salary (18.3%). This may reflect the change in work ethics among university students, according to the trend of the times. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, we found that educational guidance to enhance the level of satisfaction with the major, and career guidance to understand and apply the clear vision and long-term job security are necessary.

Wang Yang-Ming's Mind-Heart Learning and Empathy (왕양명의 심학(心學)과 공감)

  • The present study attempts to shed new light on Wang Yang-Ming's(王陽明, 1472-1528) Mind-Heart Learning(心學) by using "empathy" as a key word. In order to review Wang Yang-Ming's Mind-Heart Learning with the keyword of "empathy," the study will first examine the empathetic nature of "Liang-zhi(良知)", which is the essence of Wang Yang-Ming's Mind-Heart Learning. The concept of "Liang-zhi" is closely related to Wang's organic worldview, in which he sees the entire universe as one whole organism. In Wang's philosophy, "Ren(仁)" means the the will to life : the virtue of nature that provides the basis of the unimpeded communication of life force among all beings in the universe. Thus, his philosophy emphasizes that "Ren(仁)" is the ceaseless and dynamic life-generating foundation that serves as the fundamental life force and principle that pervades nature and human beings. According to Wang, Ren(仁), which is the principle of life that creates and nurture the whole universe of sky, earth, and nature, is an innate quality of all human beings who exist as part of the nature. In this context, empathy can be seen as an essential feature that characterizes Wang's Mind-Heart Learning(心學). According to Wang, there is a close relation between human nature and various emotional states or feelings which modern psychology or counseling psychology mainly deals with-anxiety, worry, pleasure, enjoyment, and sense of security. By making a close connection between the realization of good nature and emotion, Wang can be said to have integrated The essence of human nature and the essence of heart. In this way, his philosophy argues that people are led to act morally not by obligation or enforcement imposed on them by others but by vitality and joy belonging to the innate quality of human heart. Based on this basic understanding of "empathy" in Wang's Mind-Heart Learning(心學), the present study will bring to the fore some aspects of empathy such as moral sensibility, driving force for self-fulfillment, integrated intelligence, and practical ways to realize innate goodness.
