A Study for Design of Reinforced Concrete Pier Based on Virtual Model (Virtual Modeling 기반의 철근 콘크리트 교각 설계에 관한 연구)

  • When the design modification is occurred, at present, design process based on 2-D spend more time and effort than that based on 3-D to modify related structural details. To improve and develop these processes, therefore, the design possibility of civil structures based on virtual model of 3-D must be investigated. We designed reinforced concrete pier of 3-D model, containing parameters. The parameters was defined as structural details like area of the section, reinforcement specification for design modification and structural analysis. In this paper, we researched about the processes modeling of reinforced concrete bridge pier based on parameters, the extracting data from the virtual model of 3-D, and the reflection of data to virtual model throughout structural analysis.

  • This paper deals with shaking table tests on RC piers to evaluate the seismic performance under near fault motion. Small scale models were fabricated and axial force was applied by introducing prestress at the centroid of the column section. Mass effect of the superstructures was simulated by mass frame which was linked with a pier model by steel bars because of the limited payload of shaking table. Friction of the mass frame when it moves was minimized by special details and it was proved before tests. Scale factor of the RC piers was 4.25. Main parameters of the test were details of reinforcements. After verifying the results of shaking table tests, seismic performance was evaluated by increasing the acceleration of the near fault motion.

Design and development of an automated all-terrain wheeled robot

  • Due to the rapid progress in the field of robotics, it is a high time to concentrate on the development of a robot that can manoeuvre in all type of landscapes, ascend and descend stairs and sloping surfaces autonomously. This paper presents details of a prototype robot which can navigate in very rough terrain, ascend and descend staircase as well as sloping surface and cross ditches. The robot is made up of six differentially steered wheels and some passive mechanism, making it suitable to cross long ditches and landscape undulation. Static stability of the developed robot have been carried out analytically and navigation capability of the robot is observed through simulation in different environment, separately. Description of embedded system of the robot has also been presented and experimental validation has been made along with some details on obstacle avoidance. Finally the limitations of the robot have been explored with their possible reasons.

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Welded Beam-Column Connections abricated with SHN Steel Sections (SHN 형강 보-기둥 접합부의 내진성능 평가)

  • In this study, cyclic tests of beam-column connections composed with members applicable to the domestic low-middle rise steel buildings were conducted to develop seismic connection details and its evaluation. Connection types and material properties of the steel were testing variables and the difference between the newly developed seismic rolled section (SHN490) and existing rolled section (SM490) was also investigated. Distributions of the yield strength and the ultimate strength of the SHN490 rolled section were relatively uniform comparing to those of the SM490 rolled section Brittle fracture in the weldments of the test specimens was not observed. Instead, fracture occurred at heat-affected zones or the stress-concentrated point near the weld access hole of the beam flanges. In the case of identical rolled-section specimens, the rotational capacity and dissipated energy of the WUF-W connection was larger than those of the WUF-B connection. In the case of identical connection types, the rotational capacity and dissipated energy of the SHN490 section connection was larger than those of the WUF-B section connection.

  • In this paper we present methodology for parameters identification of constitutive model which is able to present behavior of a connection between two members in a structure. Such a constitutive model for frame connections can be cast in the most general form of the Timoshenko beam, which can present three failure modes. The first failure mode pertains to the bending in connection, which is defined as coupled plasticity-damage model with nonlinear softening. The second failure mode is seeking to capture the shearing of connection, which is defined as plasticity with linear hardening and nonlinear softening. The third failure mode pertains to the diffuse failure in the members; excluding it leads to linear elastic constitutive law. Theoretical formulation of this Timoshenko beam model and its finite element implementation are presented in the second section. The parameter identification procedure that will allow us to define eighteen unknown parameters is given in Section 3. The proposed methodology splits identification in three phases, with all details presented in Section 4 through three different examples. We also present the real experimental results. The conclusions are stated in the last section of the paper.

Flexural Adhesive Behavior of Full-scale RC Beams Strengthened by Carbon Fiber Sheets (실물모형 실험에 의한 탄소섬유쉬트 보강 RC 보의 휨 부착거동)

  • It is recently reported that bond failure can be initiated in the region where maximum bending moment and shear force is acted by accompanying shear deformation after flexural crack in full-scale RC beams strengthened by CFRP. Such a shear deformation effect causing bond failure is relatively little in the case of small-scale specimens. So, additional reinforcing details to the critical beam section where maximum moment and shear were acted is required to prevent the bond failure caused by the shear deformations. The U-type wrapping methods by CFRP to the critical beam section is proposed and tested in this paper. Also, the applicability of design bond strength derived from the tests of small-scale beam was investigated by the full-scale RC beam strengthened by CFRP.

  • Results of an experimental investigation of low-rise reinforced concrete shear walls with rectangular cross section under cyclic loads are discussed and evaluated. Two half scale models of test specimens with height to length ratio of 0.75 were experimented. The dimension of all walls is 1500mm wide $\times$ 950 mm high $\times$ 100 mm thick for all specimens and the section of all boundary at both ends is 100 mm $\times$ 200mm. Main variables are : horizontal shear reinforcement ratios and reinforcement details(including crossed diagonal shear reinforcements in SWR2 specimen) In SWR2 specimen, maximum strength and consequently dissipating energy index were 1.15~1.21 and 1.48 times greater than those of SWR1 specimen, respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic capacity of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers before and after applying a seismic retrofitting method using stainless steel wire mesh. Total nine circular section RC piers were constructed. Different lap splice longitudinal reinforcement details were adapted for four specimens and various types of stainless steel wire mesh were applied for the remaining five specimens. Harmonic cyclic lateral load was applied on each specimen under a constant axial load. The test results indicated that the existing circular piers have low seismic capacity while the stainless steel wire mesh retrofitting method improves the seismic capacity considerably. In addition, test results revealed that the circular section piers could have a considerable amount of ductility if longitudinal bars are not lap-spliced in potential plastic hinge zone. Based on this experimental study it could be concluded that the seismic performance, that is ductility and energy absorption capacity, of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers would be increased by applying the stainless steel wire mesh seismic retrofitting method.

  • This paper studied the temperature distribution and heat transfer at a rectangular cross-section. Particularly, as we have known that FEM6, FEM10 can be able to divide FEM3 (25), FEM 3 (49) and we observed it with the details. The approximate solutions (FDM, FEM 3, FEM 3 (25), FEM 3 (49), FEM(6) were compared to the 2-dimensional exact solution. The results of this paper show that FEM 6 is the most accurate temperature profiles and heat transfer, furthermore mean values of the FEM 6 is more accurate than FEM 3(25) and FEM 3 (49).

Four halr scale models of test specimens with height to length ratio of 0.75 were experimented. The dimension of all walls is 1500mm wide $\times$ 950 mm high $\times$ 100 mm thick and the section of all boundary column at both ends is 200 mm $\times$ 200mm. Main variables are : design concept, vertical flexural reinflrcement ratios and reinforcement details(including crossed diagonal shear reinforcement in SW7 specimen). In SW7 specimen, maximum strength and consequently dissipating energy index were 1.45 and 1.28 times greater than those of SW6 specimen, respectively.
