  • Purpose: This study investigated hand-washing practice among community-dwelling older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and aimed to identify the impact of COVID-19-related concerns and depression on hand-washing practice. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data extracted from the 2020 Community Health Survey. The primary data were collected through self-reporting from August 10 to September 8, 2020 in a cross-sectional study. The subjects comprised of 1,350 adults aged 65 or older living in Jeju Province who participated in the 2020 Community Health Survey. Results: The factors affecting hand-washing practice among older adults were male older adults (β = -.18, p < .001), age (β = -.07, p = .001), no education (β = -.20, p < .001) and elementary, middle, and high school graduation (β = -.15, p < .001) compared to a college or higher education, poor health perception (β = -.13, p < .001), COVID-19-related concerns (β = .08, p = .005), and depression (β = -.07, p = .001). To summarize, the factors negatively affecting hand-washing practice included male gender, lower education level, poor health perception, and depression. In contrast, factors positively associated with hand-washing practice included COVID-19-related concerns. Conclusion: These findings show the importance of considering these multifaceted determinants when designing targeted interventions and educational programs to promote hand-washing among older adults. Additionally, based on the relationship between hand-washing practice and COVID-19-related concerns and depression, interventions that can alleviate mental problems along with providing proper education are required.

  • Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).

  • This study was to suggest a feasible sizing system of infants and children's swim-suits. The basic body dimensions were selected after surveying the swimsuit manufacturers. The control dimensions and the secondary dimensions were taken from the 1997 National Anthropometric Survey data for the establishment of the sizing system. While in the current market swimsuit sizes were generally measured by the hip circumference for boys, and the bust and hip circumference for girls, the height was selected in this study as the control dimension because the height is well recognized by the customers and the KS standards specify the height to be the control dimension for infant's and children's wear. In the new sizing system of this study, the height was a control dimension, and hip was selected as a secondary dimension for boys. and bust and hip were selected as secondary dimensions for girls. Conclusively, in this study we suggest 12 sizes in case of 5cm height interval by the KS sizing system and 7 sizes in case of loom height interval by the current market sizing system, based on the height as a control dimension, for a standard swim-suit sizing system for infants and children.

  • The paper is investigation of the secondary vegeation and succession at the forest fire area in Mt. Palgong. The survey was carried out from April, 1981 to Stempter, 1982. The floristic compositions were as follows: 50 families, 116 genera, 127 species, 15 varieties and 3 formae(145 kinds). Among them, the floristic composition of the pine floor vegetation of the unburned area was 43 families, 80 genera, 88 species, 10 varieties and 1 forma(99 kinds), and that of the secondary vegetatiion after forest fire was 46 families, 106 genera, 120 species, 14 varieties and 3 formae(137 kinds). Index of similarity between the burned and unburned area was 0.77. The biological type succeeded in $H-D_1-R_5$type, and the erect form(s) was prevailed. Carex humilis var. nana, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, and lespedeza cyrtobotrya were dominant species in the $ B_1; and; B_2$ area of the seventh year after forest fire. In the degree of succession, species diversity, and evenness index, DS, H, and e of the $B_1$ area were higher than those of the $B_2$ area. In the soil properties, it assumed that pH, total nitrogen, and available phosphores of the burned area were nearly recovered to those of the unburned area.

  • In this study, the discharging effluents from have been 9 municipal wastewater treatment plants surveyed for 1 year-period. Statistics including probability distribution, cumulative occurrence concentration and other statistical parameters were presented. In addition, treatment performance and its stability were also discussed. Most of the plants, have an operational problem of high soluble organic content in the secondary effluent which may be associated with the integrated treatment of human and livestock manures. Nitrogen concentration in the effluents were usually higher during the period of summer and winter. It was found that this is mainly due to lack of the proper C/N ratio during the summer, or/and the effects of low temperature and less dilution by dry weather during the winter. Phosphorus concentration is sharply increased in June. Discussion with plant operators told that it is due to the dissolution of phosphate from the sludge accumulated in the primary settling tanks from the early spring to june. During this period, usually, sludge treatment line is highly overloaded with flush-outs of the sediments also stored in the bottom of combined sewer due to the low flow during winter season. Most of the plants can meet new effluent discharge limits of the nitrogen and phosphorus, and total coliform without further treatment.

  • Underserved area is a region that has a lack of healthcare resources. In the context of Korea, however, there are not enough detailed criteria for underserved areas. In this study, we aimed to develop indicators for underserved area through Delphi technique. We systematically reviewed the existing measure of underserved area. Sixty indicators were extracted as candidates across four domains in secondary medical care. Four domains are demand, medical resource, quality of care, and health outcome. To develop indicator, two round Delphi survey was conducted among 15 professional experts such as professionals and public administrators. In conclusion, 2 final indicators (accessibility, medical utilization) was determined as an appropriate measure in order to designate underserved area for secondary medical services. Using our criteria from Delphi technique, 36 areas were found as underserved areas for the secondary medical care.

  • Demands for developing diverse teaching methods and materials which can lead to active participation of students in classes have been emerged for environmental education in secondary schools. In order for more effective environmental education, a variety of programs in the mass media including public broadcasting have been used. Advantages associated with the broadcasted TV programs include compensation of temporal and spatial limits embedded with the printing media, improvement of studying efficiency, and provision of diverse studying opportunities, leading to the promotion of the awareness of environmental issues. In this study, 256 environmental issues related TV programs being aired via major public broadcasting companies such as EBS, KBS, MBC and SBS between years of 2003 and 2004 were analyzed. During the present research, selection of the programs was made based on the weight of the environmental issues in independent programs being aired for at least 10 minutes. A survey as a primary means was carried out for the utilization of the audio-visual educational materials in order to provide a new method employing the TV programs which were related to the environmental issues during the instruction in secondary schools.

  • Based on a survey on 1620 students in primary school and secondary school., by adopting Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), we got the following findings : 1. There is close relationship between emotionality characteristics of temperament and mathematics academic achievement of the subjects at Grade 5 (Primary 5), Grade 8 (Junior Secondary 2), and Grade 10 (Senior Secondary 2). Also there is close relationship between internal-external directivity characteristics of temperament and mathematics academic achievement at Grade 5 and Grade 8. While there is not close relationship between internal-external directivity characteristics of temperament and mathematics academic achievement at Grade 10; 2. There is close relationship between temperament types and mathematics academic achievement of the subjects from the three grades. Superior temperament, which benefit learning mathematics, are sanguine, sanguine-phlegmatic and phlegmatic; While inferior temperament types, which don't benefit learning mathematics, are choleric, melancholic and choleric-melancholic. With the rising of grade, temperament types of benefiting learning mathematics converts from external directivity emotion balance to balance of internal-external directivity emotion stability. While temperament of no benefiting learning mathematics converts from internal directivity emotion balance to balance of internal-external directivity emotion instability; 3. In mathematics education, students' temperament difference, which affects learning mathematics, should be recognized. Mathematics teachers should find out the best teaching ways, forms and methods which are suitable for student's temperament type, so that the students with different temperament types can gain better mathematics academic achievement.
