  • The consolidation tests are conducted to investigate the soil particle crushing stress for understanding the secondary compression characteristics of carbonate sandy sabkha soil caused by particle crushing under a high confining stress. The rate of secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$) is introduced instead of the rate of secondary compression to define the characteristic of the particle crushing compression settlement ($S_s{^*}$). Void ratio ($e_p{^*}$) and settlement ($H_p{^*}$) in particle crushing are used as a reference point of secondary behavior, and the ratio of primary compression index ($C_c$) to secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$), $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}/C_c$ value was changed from 0.0105 to 0.0187. When comparing with quartz sands, secondary compression settlement of sabkha is very large due to particle crushing which is not usually observed in quartz sand. It is observed that as the depth of sabkha layer becomes deep, the $S_s{^*}$ and $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$ increase under the same stress level.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the consolidation characteristics of the marine clay, treated with predetermined ratios of lime and briquette ash. The standard consolidation test was performed for the sample of mixture remoulded under the condition of optimum moisture content. The results obtained were as follows ; 1.The increase of the consolidation coefficient due to load increament was larger in the lime treated soil and briquette ash treated soil than in the untreated soil. The decrease of the compression index due to admixing ratio of additives was smaller in the former than in the latter. 2.The increase of the secondary consolidation coefficient of the untreated soil due to load increment was minimal, while that of lime treated soil and the lime-briquette ash treated soil was conspicuous and that of briquette ash treated soil was slight. 3.The $C\alpha$/Cc relationship of untreated soil was represented by colsely distributed points. That of briquette ash treated soil, lime treated soil and the lime-briquette ash treated soil was represented by linear distribution. The $C\alpha$/Cc values of untreated soil, briquette ash treated soil and lime treated soil were approximately 0.049, 0.044 and 0.031, respectively. 4.The maximum consolidation coefficient was obtained with lime and briquette ash (lime : briquette .h 2 :1) mixture ratio of 15%. And the minimum secondary consolidation coefficient, compression index was obtained with same mixture ratio. The required quantity of lime could be reduced and the consolidation was accelerated by applying the above mixture ratio.

  • A series of standard consolidation tests and repeated loading consolidation tests were peformed with 2 kinds of peat sampled in Chonbuk area to study the consolidation characteristics of peat. The samples had following physical properties : 58% and 72% of organic content, 487% and 685% of natural moisture content and 7.02 and 9.72 of initial void ratio, respectively. And compression index $C_{c}$ and coefficient of secondary consolidation $C_{\alpha}$ were increased steeply when the consolidation load exceed about 2.5 and 3 times of each preload as like the characteristics of peat. The dependance on consolidation pressure of $C_{C}\;and\;C_{\alpha}$ in peatl and the maximum values, 2.9-3.8 and 0.3-0.4 were larger than that of normal clay, respectively.

  • In order to analyze the effect of applying the bioreactor landfills on the waste landfill for acceleration of waste biocompression, a settlement experiment was performed. The secondary compression indices (Cα) were analyzed, and compared with the results of experimental studies conducted in other countries. Analyses of Cα from the experiment showed that the recirculation method of mixing leachate and FWL could accelerate the waste settlement as much as 2.9 times and 2 times more than the leachate recirculation and the sanitary landfills due to additional biocompression generated by the organic matter in FWL. The Cα in this study was smaller than the Cα of the other studies due to the low organic content of the waste in accordance with domestic waste policies to reduce food waste. The relation between biodegradable waste content and Cα was analyzed. The Cα of the waste was shown to be sensitive to biodegradable waste content, and become higher as the content of the biodegradable waste increases.
