  • The purpose of this study is to reconceptualize the homeroom management and classroom management for secondary school teachers. The result of the study is as follows: First, the homeroom management that has been usually miss-presented as 'classroom management' in Korea is the concept comprizing the elements of homeroom management and those of teaching management together. Second is the re-conceptualization of classroom management. As the sub-concepts of classroom management, the homeroom (classroom) management and the teaching (classroom) management are also suggested. The classroom management is defined as 'the conduct or ability to accomplish the educational activities successfully'. Meanwhile, the homeroom (classroom) management is defined as 'the homeroom teacher's conduct or ability to successfully accomplish the educational activities for class students' and the teaching (classroom) management as 'the subject teacher's conduct or ability to successfully accomplish the educational activities for the class'. Therefore, the teachers are asked to have the ability for classroom management - that is, both the homeroom (classroom) management ability as the homeroom teachers and the teaching (classroom) management ability as the subject teachers. Based on the results, this study suggests some school policies such as the sharing of effective classroom management strategies through the change of teachers' culture and the improving of working environment for better concentration to the classroom management.

  • This study was conducted to examine my hypothesis that how teacher's teaching style influences emotional and physiological states of students in the secondary school science classroom. Sixty healthy secondary school students were participated in this study and divided into two groups: manipulation and non-manipulation. Each group underwent different styles of teaching on the scientific hypothesis-generating of com starch experiment. Before and after the class, the strength of emotion was measured using adjective emoticon check lists and they extracted their saliva sample for salivary hormone analysis. Here are the results of this study. First, the intensity of positive emotions in the manipulation group was significantly stronger than the one in the non-manipulation group, whereas the intensity of negative emotions in the non-manipulation group was significantly stronger than the one in the manipulation group. Second, the cortisol level, an indicator of stress, was decreased in the manipulation group whereas it was increased in non-manipulation group. Third, the quality of scientific hypotheses which is generated by students during the class had no connection with types of instructions. Fourth, this study found significantly negative correlation between students' emotional intensity of interest and concentration changes of salivary cortisol. Therefore, the different teaching styles have influence upon students' attitude and interest in science.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate future teachers' skills that can make problem solving methods concrete for 7-11 year old students. For the students in the concrete operations level, solutions of word problems should also be taught by concreting. But most of teacher candidates can not solve the problems without algebra because they got used to solve the word problems with algebra during their high school and university education. In this study, whether the teacher candidates have the skills of solving the primary school level problems without using algebra or not are being observed. At the end of this observation it is determinated that primary level teacher candidates generally prefer using algebra operations because of their former habits. The results show that in the education of the primary level teacher candidates, there is the need of developing the solving skills using figures and diagrams without algebra rather than algebraic solutions in word problems.

We carried out teacher training program for 50 secondary school mathematics teachers in July 2014. In this teacher training courses, teachers conducted recording mathematics teaching-learning processes by dialogue between teacher and student according to Socratic method. We also shared the practices of teacher educators, teachers and colleagues. In this teacher training, we tried to cultivate teachers' abilities needed to a good mathematics instruction. And we aimed to equip the attitude that guided reflection on their mathematics class. Through the teacher training, teachers recognized the need to study on the thinking of students and take into account students' expected reaction on the part of learners. Also they developed an attitude as reflective practitioners and recognized the need of teacher learning communities for their professional development.

Therefore, exploration of teacher professionalism in gifted education may provide fundamental bases for raising the quality of gifted education. In this study, first, literature review was conducted to extract elements of teacher professionalism in gifted education and a survey instrument was developed to find out categories of those elements and differences of teacher perception to professionalism at school levels and subject areas of gifted education. Research subjects included 212 teachers who participated in 2005 KEDI teacher training program of gifted education, 60 hour-clock introductory program and 232 teachers who participated in 2005 KEDI teacher training program of gifted education, 120 hour-clock enrichment program. It was found that elements of teacher professionalism in gifted education were categorized into knowledge-based, abilitybased and context-based. It was also found that secondary school teachers' perception to knowledge-based professionalism was significantly higher than those at elementary and science teachers' perception to ability-based and context-based professionalism was significantly higher than mathematics teachers. The research findings may provide insights for better teacher training program in gifted education as well as gifted education policies.

  • Recognizing the necessity of content-centered teacher professional development programs in a rapidly changing educational environments, this study analyzed the contents of teacher professional development programs in terms of teachers' participation by program contents and teachers' perception of the necessity and the effectiveness of such program contents. Employing Teaching and Learning International Survey(TALIS), this study analyzed the perception of 4,000 Korean secondary school teachers. The results showed that the programs with the highest teacher participation were mainly subject-centered while the teacher participation rates on the newly required contents such as ICT, intercultural counseling, school management and administration, and new job skills were low. Besides, when teachers were asked to identify the content areas where teacher professional developments are needed, the level of teachers' perception of the programs with low participation rates was accordingly low. Lastly, this study implies that since the years of teaching experience serve as a determinant on the types of the contents that teacher professional developments are needed and on the teachers' perception of the effectiveness of such contents, the course of teacher development should be taken into consideration when the contents of teacher professional development programs are developed.
