  • Grip strength is an objective indicator for evaluating the functional movement of upper extremities. Therapists have been using it for a long time as an excellent barometer for evaluating the therapy process, therapeutic effects and prognosis of patients with injuries in upper extremities. This study investigated the effects of extensor pattern position and elastic taping of non-dominant hand on the grip strength of dominant hand among general adults. The subjects of this study were 23 males and 7 females from physical therapy departments of 3 Universities located in Busan who agreed to participate in the experiment and the resultant data were analyzed using SPSS version 12.0. The results of the study were as follows. First, there was a significant difference between the grip strength of dominant hand when the non-dominant hand was at the neutral position and that when the non-dominant hand was at the extensor pattern position and both hands were at the maximum strength simultaneously (Bonferroni-corrected p<.001). Second, there was a significant difference between the grip strength of dominant hand when the non-dominant hand was at the neutral position and that when the elastic taping of non-dominant hand was applied (Bonferroni-corrected p<.001). Third, there was no significant difference between the grip strength of dominant hand when the non-dominant hand was at the extensor pattern position and both hands were at the maximum strength simultaneously and that when the elastic taping of non-dominant hand was applied. The irradiation effects through the extensor pattern position of non-dominant hand and application of the elastic taping to non-dominant hand showed significant results in improving the maximum grip strength of dominant hand. This finding could be suggested as the probability for the indirect treatment of the upper extremities of hemiplegia and orthopedic patients due to the long-term fixing of upper extremities.

  • In this paper, we propose the gesture recognition system using a motion information from extracted hand region in complex background image. First of all, we measure entropy for the difference image between continuous frames. Using a color information that is similar to a skin color in candidate region which has high value, we extract hand region only from background image. On the extracted hand region, we detect a contour using the chain code and recognize hand gesture by applying improved centroidal profile method. In the experimental results for 6 kinds of hand gesture, unlike existing methods, we can stably recognize hand gesture in complex background and illumination changes without marker. Also, it shows the recognition rate with more than 95% for person and 90∼100% for each gesture at 15 frames/second.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the stages of calcification of various teeth and skeletal maturity stages among Korean individuals. The study subjects consisted 154 female and 179 male ranging from 7 years to 16 years of age. A total of 333 hand-wrist, cephalo-lateral and panoramic radiographs were obtained and analyzed. The tooth development of the mandibular canines, first, second premolars, and second molars were assessed according to the Dermijian's system. Skeletal maturity stages were determined from hand-wrist radiographs by using the SMI system and cephalo-lateral radiographs by using the CVMS, respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The mean ages of each stage of skeletal maturity were consistently younger in female subjects. 2. There was a high correlation between skeletal maturity of hand-wrist and cervical vertebrae in the both sexes. 3. There was a high correlation between skeletal maturity and dental calcification stage of mandibular canines, first premolar, second premolars, and second molar. 4. The mandibular second molar was tooth showing the highest correlation. 5. Percent distributions of the relationship between calcification stages of individual teeth and stages of skeletal maturity were obtained in both sexes. In summary, this suggests that tooth calcification stages from panoramic radiographs might be clinically useful as a maturity indicator of the pubertal growth period.

  • The purpose of this study is to clearly understand the Korean consumer's socially responsible consumption attitude and disposition behavior through revealing by use Fishbein's Multi-Attributes Model as a conceptual frame, the relationship between the socially responsible clothing consumption attitude factors and disposition behavior pattern, and relations of demographic variables. Data were collected from the adult females residing in Seoul. Judgment Sampling were. performed twice during March of 1996 and total 549 sets of answers were used for final analysis. The result are following. First, by looking at the relationship between intrinsic side of socially responsible consumption attitude and disposition behavior, the attitude shows more economical disposition when consumers are in considerate about preservation of natural resources and clothing consumption and when consumers favor purchasing a second hand product, On the other hand, consumers' behavior shows more altruistic disposition, when they favor recycling and acquisition of second hand clothing and when not favor fashion. The result of analysis of relationship between the socially responsible clothing consumption attitude and demographic variables shows that income, age and education level relates to some intrinsic side of socially responsible clothing consumption attitude. On the other side, the analysis result shows that consumers with relatively lower education normally practice economical dispotion, while consumers with higher education level do altruistic disposition. Also, elder and married consumers tend to do more altruistic disposition.

  • In this paper, we propose the classification and tracking method of the hand region using deformable template and condensation. To do this, first, we extract the hand region by using the fuzzy color filter and HCbCr color model. Second, we extract the edge of hand by applying the Canny edge algorithm. Third, we find the first template by calculating the conditional probability between the extracted edge and the model edge. If the accurate template of the first object is decided, the condensation algorithm tries to track it. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a new hand gesture recognition scheme using hand poses captured from a web camera. The key idea of this scheme is to extract skin color from the background-subtracted image. To extract skin color, in the first phase, we subtract background by repeatedly comparing the stored initial frame with next frames. And then we eliminate noise using dynamic table. In the second phase, we exactly recognize hand gesture by extracting skin color from ${YC_b}{C_r}$ color region.

  • The drinking manners of the modern generaton were reviewed based on historical records. First, for reasons of health, we should reject the drinking from the same cup as others in reciprocation. Second, if the other people are older or younger brothers above the same level, pouring with one hand is all right, but if 5 years older or more, or stranger, grasp the bottle in two hands in the following manner. With the right hand under the bottle, and the left hand supporting its side, carefully pour wine not to show the palm of the hand. Third, ladies, also, can drink freely at the same table, but if people of the opposite sex are sitting together, they should pour with two hands to convey the meaning of courteous treatment. Fourth, because the level of our living is not two high, we must not order more them we can use, so that when we are finished, there will be no remainder.

  • The objectives of this study were: (a) to find the maximum ac- ceptable weight which can be carried for 8 hours using a psycho- physical method for front, side (one hand and two hands) and back carrying, and (b) to develop models which could predict the ac- ceptable maximum weight in carrying using isometric strength and anthropometric data. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to find the maximum acceptable weight in front side and back carrying. Six college students participated in the experiment. It was found that subjects were willing to carry the heaviest load using two-hand side carrying (average maximum acceptable weight: 7.76 kg). Back carrying was the close second with 6.62 kg. Also, there was a significant difference (p< 0.01) in maximum acceptable weight for carrying between one-hand (4.40kg) and two-hand side carrying.
