  • Intracavity second harmonic generation of diode pumped solid state lasers in the visible and ultraviolet regions provide efficient, compact and robust light sources for various applications, such as optical data storage, material processing, spectroscopy and bioanalysis. Advantages of neodymium vanadate (Nd:$YVO_4$) as a gain medium for intracavity-doubled lasers over Nd:YAG lie in the facts that the gain spectrum consists of a single line with short absorption depth, and that the stimulated emission cross sections are larger. • Two different carbazolylnitrostilbene chromophores with second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) activity were newly synthesized by the reaction of 9-(2-hydroxyethyl)-9H-carbazol-3-carbaldehyde with 4-nitrophenylacetonitrile or 4-nitrophenylacetic acid. The NLO monomers were obtained by reaction of these chromophores with methacryloyl chloride. The side-chain nonlinear optical polymers were synthesized by the copolymerization of NLO monomer with methylmethacrylate using a free radical initiator. The chemical structures of the polymers were identified by spectroscopic means and the polymer properties such as molecular weight, Tg, solubility, UV-visible absorption, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients were investigated.

  • The PDP(Plasma Display Panel) barrier rib material on the glass substrate was patterned for fabrication of the PDP cell using Nd:YAG laser(1064 nm) which can generate the second(532 nm) and forth(266 nm) harmonic wave by HGM(harmonic generation modules). At a scan speed of 20 ${\mu}m/s$ with the second harmonic wave(532 nm) of Nd:YAG laser, the etching threshold laser fluence of the PDP material was 6.5 $mJ/cm^2$ and a sample(thickness = 180 ${\mu}m$) on the glass substrate was removed clearly at a laser fluence of 19.5 $mJ/cm^2$. In order to increase the throughput of the fabrication we divided a single-beam into multi-beams by using a metal mask between the sample and the focusing lens. As a result, 10 lines of PDP cell were formed by one laser beam scanning at a scan speed of 200 ${\mu}m/s$ and a laser fluence of 2.86 $J/cm^2$.

  • The four fuzzy criteria to distinguish the internal fault from the inrush fur the power transformer protection have been identified. They are based on the wave shape, terminal voltage, fundamental and second harmonic component of differential current. systematic way to determine the associated fuzzy membership function is also proposed.

  • Recently multiferroic materials have attract great interest for the applications on memorial, spintronic and magneto-electric sensor devices for their spontaneous magneto-electric coupling properties. Research and development of the various kinds of multiferroics are indispensable factor for a new generation multifunctional materials. In this research, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and nonlinear optical properties of La modified $BiLaFe_2O_6$ (BLFO) and Mn modified $Bi_2FeMnO_6$ (BFMO) were studied as new members of multiferroic $BiFeO_3$ (BFO) series by first-principles calculations, and compared with the pure BFO to discover the optimized properties. Our results show that BLFO and BFMO have good mechanical stability as revealed by elastic constants that satisfy the stability criteria. All these compounds exhibit anisotropic and ductile nature. The enhanced properties by La and Mn substitution, such as increased hardness, improved magnetism, decreased band gap and comparable second harmonic generation responses reveal that the new multiferroic members of BLFO and BFMO would get wider application than their BFO counterpart. Our study is expected to providing an appropriate mechanical reference data as guidance for engineering of high efficiency multifunctional devices with the BFO series.

  • The molecular orientational dynamics of the nonlinear optical(NLO) side-chain polymer N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol-poly (pphenylene terephthalates) have been studied using nonlinear optical responses as measured by second harmonic generation (SHG). A new pulsed corona poling is used to orient the NLO chromophores and the polymer segments into the noncentrosymmetric structure required to obtain the SHG signal. By corona poling of negative high voltage pulses with variable repetition rates (between 0.5 and 10 ㎑) at temperature between 25$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$, well below and about the glass transition temperature 70$^{\circ}C$, the side-chain chromophores and the polymer chain contour rearrange themselves and create the domain structure observed by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The pulsed corona voltage enhances the orientational ordering of the NLO chromophores and also significantly influences the growth of SHG signal and the improved relaxation behavior after the poling field is removed, reducing the visible damage to the polymer film dramatically. This new pulsed corona poling experiment gave direct in situ evidence that the NLO chromophore and the polymer backbone undergo anisotropic rearrangement during the poling process.

  • Small distributed generation units are usually connected to the main electric grid through single-phase voltage source inverters. Grid operating conditions such as voltage and frequency are not constant and can fluctuate within the range values established by international standards. Furthermore, the requirements in terms of power factor correction, total harmonic distortion, and reliability are getting tighter day by day. As a result, the implementation of reliable and efficient control algorithms, which are able to adjust their control parameters in response to changeable grid operating conditions, is essential. This paper investigates the configuration topology and control algorithm of a single-phase inverter with the purpose of achieving high performance in terms of efficiency as well as total harmonic distortion of the output current. Accordingly, a Second Order Generalized Integrator with a suitable Phase Locked Loop (SOGI-PLL) is the basis of the proposed current and voltage regulation. Some practical issues related to the control algorithm are addressed, and a solution for the control architecture is proposed, based on resonant controllers that are continuously tuned on the basis of the actual grid frequency. Further, intentional islanding operation is investigated and a possible procedure for switching from grid-tied to islanding operation and vice-versa is proposed.

  • We generated the second harmonic of Ti:sapphire laser in LiI$O_3$ and BBO crystals. Two LiI$O_3$, crystals and a BBO crystal were used, and the lengths of LiI$O_3$ crystals were 5, 10 mm and that of BBO was 7 mm. We measured the conversion efficiencies of LiI$O_3$ and BBO in the wavelength range of 780-810 nm, and compared with the caculation of theory. The measured second harmonic conversion coefficients were (1.06${\pm}0.05){\times}10^4\;W^1$(10mm), (5.28${\pm}0.33){\times}10^5\;W^1$(5mm), and (2.96${\pm}0.05){\times}10^5\;W^1$(BBO, 7 mm) at the fundamental wavelength of 794 nm.

  • A noncollinear-phase-matching cone of second harmonic generation(SHG) was observed in a LiNbO3 crystal doped with l mol% MgO. Birefringence refractive indices can be accurately evaluated by analysing the temperature phase matching characteristic for SHG combined with the measurement of the half cone angle. The electro-optic coefficient can also be determined form the observed change of the half cone angle when a DC electric field is applied along the optic axis.
