  • This paper proposes an independent component analyses(ICAs) of the fixed-point (FP) algorithm based on Newton and secant method by adding the kurtosis, respectively. The kurtosis is applied to cluster the analyzed components, and the FP algorithm is applied to get the fast analysis and superior performance irrelevant to learning parameters. The proposed ICAs have been applied to the problems for separating the 6-mixed signals of 500 samples and 10-mixed images of $512\times512$ pixels, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed ICAs have always a fixed analysis sequence. The results can be solved the limit of conventional ICA without a kurtosis which has a variable sequence depending on the running of algorithm. Especially. the proposed ICA can be used for classifying and identifying the signals or the images. The results also show that the secant method has better the separation speed and performance than Newton method. And, the secant method gives relatively larger improvement degree as the problem size increases.

  • For safe and economical design to provide strong earthquake resistance, the moment redistribution and plastic rotation of structures and their members needs to be evaluated. To achieve this, an earthquake design method was developed using secant stiffness analysis. To address the variation of member stiffness due to plastic rotation and moment redistribution, a structure was modeled with a beam-column element with non-rigid end connections (NREC element). Secant stiffness for the NREC element was determined based on the ductility demands of the structure and members. By performing a conventional linear analysis for the secant stiffness model, redistributed moments and plastic rotations of the members were computed. The proposed method was applied to a moment frame and two dual systems. The design results were verified using detailed nonlinear analyses.

  • A new earthquake design method performing iterative calculations using secant stiffness was developed. The proposed design method has the advantages of convenience and stability in numerical analysis because it uses elastic analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the strength and ductility demands on the members because it performs the analysis on the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculation. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were presented by the comparisons with existing design methods using elastic or inelastic analysis. The proposed design method, as an integrated method of analysis and design, can address the earthquake design strategy devised by the engineer, such as ductility limit on each member, the design concept of strong column - weak beam, and etc. Through iterative calculations on the structure preliminarily designed only with member sizing, the strength and ductility demands of each member can be directly calculated so as to satisfy the given design strategy As the result economical and safe design can be achieved.

  • We introduce a new two-point iterative method to approximate solutions of nonlinear operator equations. The method uses only divided differences of order one, and two previous iterates. However in contrast to the Secant method which is of order 1.618..., our method is of order two. A local and a semilocal convergence analysis is provided based on the majorizing principle. Finally the monotone convergence of the method is explored on partially ordered topological spaces. Numerical examples are also provided where our results compare favorably to earlier ones [1], [4], [5], [19].

  • The design of broad-band, thin layer electromagnetic wave absorbers usually employs magnetic materials. The common absorber consists of a magnetic material layer bonded to a metal plate at the back. For such structure, a theoretical expression involving six parameters defines the allowable material shape and values of electromagnetic parameters that will produce zero reflection or more practically more than 99% absorption (20dB attenuation). The Secant Method was employed to compute the matching boundary values corresponding to 20dB attenuation. In addition, a search algorithm coupled with the Secant Method was developed to obtain allowable range of material parameters for the design of wave absorbers. These numerical methodes applicable to any six parameters effectively yielded accurate solutions in the least iterations.

  • In this paper, the secant method is adopted to improve a transfer function required by specific filtration properties. It is advantageous over the conventional and widely used 'Template method' in that it enables users to seek the position of a pole which will turn out to meet well the requirements of in-band insertion loss as well as stop-band rejection even after a small number of iterative steps. For validating the proposed method, the transfer function of a 4-pole waveguide filter is targeted.

  • In this paper, we used modified tanh-coth method, combined with Riccati equation and secant hyperbolic ansatz to construct abundantly many real and complex exact travelling wave solutions to KdV-Burgers (KdVB) equation with forcing term. The real part is the sum of the shock wave solution of a Burgers equation and the solitary wave solution of a KdV equation with forcing term, while the imaginary part is the product of a shock wave solution of Burgers with a solitary wave travelling solution of KdV equation. The method gives more solutions than the previous methods.

  • A new strut-tie model using secant stiffness, Direct Inelastic Strut-Tie Model, was developed. Since basically the proposed design method uses linear analysis, it is convenient and stable in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the inelastic strength and ductility demands of struts and ties because it can analyzes the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculations for secant stiffness. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were highlighted by the comparison with the traditional strut-tie model. The Direct Inelastic Strut-Tie Model, as an integrated analysis/design method, can directly address the design strategy intended by the engineer to prevent development of macro-cracks and brittle failure of struts. Since the proposed model can analyze the inelastic deformation, indeterminate strut-tie model can be used. Also, since the proposed model controls the local deformations of struts and ties, it can be used as a performance-based design method for various design criteria.
