  • Fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gampo in the East Sea of Korea were analyzed using the samples of fishes collected with bottom trammel gill nets June, September, and December 2005 and, March 2006. During the study period, a total of 32 fish species, 695 individuals, and 180,012.0 g representing 21 families were collected. The fish assemblages predominantly consisted of Ditrema temminckii, which accounted for 52.4% of the number of individuals and 40.4% in the biomass. The next major specimens were Hexagrammos otakii, Sebastes schlegelii, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Sebastes taczanowskii, Halichoeres poecilopterus. These six fishes accounted 77.6% of total number of individuals and 77.5% of total biomass. The number of fish species, the number of individuals and biomass were fluctuated with month. The number of species was highest in June 2005 and lowest in March 2006. The number of individuals and biomass was highest in September 2005 and lowest in June 2005.

  • The comparative feeding ecology of greenling Hexagrammos otakii and Schlegel's black rockfish Sebastes schlereli populations was investigated in the Jangbong tidal flat near Incheon, Korea. Monthly samples were taken using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. The stomach contents of 124 greenling and 115 Schlegel's black rockfish were analyzed. The diet of H. otakii was dominated by the amphipods Gammaropsis iaponicus, Caprella scaura, Isaeopsis sp. and Monocorophium acherusicum, the shrimps Latreutes mucronatus and Alpheus japonicus, the mysid Neomysis orientalis and the bivalve Mytilus edulis. In contrast, S. schlegeli mainly fed on the mysids N. orientalis, N japonica, and N. awatschensis, the shrimps Exopalaemon carinicauda, A. japonicus and L. mucronatus, and the fish Pholis fangi and unidentified gobiids. A comparison of the frequency and abundance of food items showed that crustaceans (e.g. amphipods, mysids and shrimps) were important foods for both species. Their main dietary components, however differed which is probably due to differences in the spatial distribution of the two species and their prey items. In conclusion, greenling and Schlegel's black rockfish, despite being sympatric on a tidal flat have distinct food habits and low dietary overlap (Schooner's index: 0.1). These results indicate, to some extent, resource partitioning for the maximum utilization of available foods in the tidal flat.

  • Feeding habits of Sebastes inermis collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January 1994 to December 1994 were studied. S. inermis ($1\~9\;cm\;SL$) was a carnivore which mainly consumed amphipods (gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods) and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of caridean shrimps, crabs, gastropods, and fishes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, amphipods were heavily selected as the body size of S. inermis increases. Although consumption of copepods increased during spring, amphipods were major prey organisms for all seasons.

  • Age and growth of black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli sampled from the Tongyeong marine ranching area in Korea waters were determined from 1,173 otoliths from July, 2001 to May, 2004. Examination of outer margins of the otolith showed that the opaque zone was formed once a year. Marginal increment of the otolith formed annual ring from July. The von Bertalanffy growth curve had the growth parameters estimated from non-linear regression were $L_t=48.45(1-e^{-0.2139(t+0.4313)})$, $W_t=1,837.93(1-e^{-0.2139(t+0.4313)})^{3.02}$ 3.02 for females and, $L_t=49.32(1-e^{-0.1775(t+0.7403)})$, $W_t=1,887.83(1-e^{-0.1775(t+0.7403)})^3$ for males, where t is age (year) and Lt is body length (mm) at age t. Growth at the age of male and female shows significant difference (p<0.01).

  • The effects of noise stress response on hematological parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit and MCHC) and plasma parameters (cortisol, glucose and albumin) in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), a very important commercial marine fish in Korea, were investigated. These parameters were analyzed on fish exposed to an explosion of noise. There were no significant differences or trends in hematological parameters (hematocrit; control $29.7{\pm}4.8%$, experiment 32.0 35.5%; hemoglobin; control $6.5{\pm}0.7g/dL$, experiment 6.2 7.8 g/dL; MCHC; control $19.6{\pm}0.6g/dL$, experiment 19.9~22.2 g/dL). However, plasma cortisol and glucose exhibited significant differences from start to finish and displayed the following patterns (cortisol; control $180.7{\pm}35.4ng/mL$, experiment 247.0 444.5 ng/mL; glucose; control $32.5{\pm}6.3mg/dL$, experiment 50.5 109.0 mg/dL). In addition, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA expression and basal levels of various tissues (eye, gills, liver, intestine, skin and gonads) were investigated for the first time in this marine fish. When the Korean rockfish was exposed to explosive noise stress, the GR mRNA was expressed more in the gonads than in other tissues tested and was elevated significantly from two and four times in the liver and gills, respectively, after noise exposure.

  • Several our studies have focused recently on the mass production of the freshwater Cladoceran Moina macrocopa which can substitute Artemia nauplii for the culture of larval marin fish. A 6 weeks experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of enrichment on the fatty acid composition of Moina macrocopa through feeding Schizochytrium sp. containing highly unsaturated fatty acids and to study the impacts of n-3-HUFA enriched Moina on improving survival rate and fatty acid compostion of larval rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. After feeding for 6 weeks, the Moina-fed fry resulted in a higher survival rate of 99.2% compared to the Artemia-fed fry 12.8%. In addition, the Moina-fed fry had the fast growth rate 45.6mm compare to the Artemia-fed fry 25.7 mm at the end of the experiment. The Moina-fed fry showed significantly higher level of 16.47% DHA than their Artemia-fed fry counterparts of the level of 3.97% with respect to DHA. PL, the cell membrane components in living food organisms, constituted 63.8% of the Moina, which was significantly higher than in the 40.1% of the Artemia. The present study indicate that Moina macrocopa can be used as Artemia substitute and improving the survival rate rockfish larvae through enchriment Schizochytrium sp.

  • This study examined the effects of the dietary inclusion of Porphyra and sea tangle Laminaria japonica on the growth, feed utilization, body composition, and plasma chemistry of juvenile Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. Eight hundred and forty juvenile fish averaging 5.0 g were allocated 40 fish per tank to 21 180-L flow-through tanks. Seven experimental diets were prepared: control (Con) without additive, 0.5 and 1% Porphyra extract (PE), 3% Porphyra powder (PP), 0.5 and 1% sea tangle extract (STE) and 3% sea tangle powder (STP), referred to as PE-0.5, PE-1, PP-3, STE-0.5, STE-1, and STP-3, respectively. Each additive was included in the experimental diet at the expense of the same amount of wheat flour. Each experimental diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish. The experimental diets had no effect on the survival, weight gain or specific growth rate of the fish, feed consumption, feed efficiency ratio, protein efficiency ratio, protein retention, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, moisture or crude protein content of the entire body excluding the liver or moisture, crude protein or crude lipid content of the liver. None of the plasma parameters were affected by the experimental diets. Based on these results, the dietary inclusion of Porphyra and sea tangle did not affect the growth, feed utilization, body composition or plasma chemistry of juvenile Korean rockfish.

  • The effects of dietary antioxidant [saltwort (SW), leek (LK), and dandelion (DD)] supplementation on the growth, body composition, serum chemistry, and challenge test results of juvenile rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii, were determined. In an experiment, 320 fish were randomly distributed into eight, 50-L flow-through tanks (40 fish per tank). Four experimental diets were prepared: the control diet (Con) with synthetic antioxidant: and diets with SW, LK, or DD from natural sources. Each diet was randomly assigned to duplicate tanks of fish, which were hand-fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. After the 8-week feeding trial, 20 fish from each tank were artificially infected with Streptococcus iniae and monitored for 6 days. The dietary additives did not affect survival, weight gain, specific growth rate, feed efficiency (FE), protein efficiency ratio (PER), or plasma chemistry. However, the cumulative mortality of fish fed the SW, LK and DD diets was lower than that of fish fed the control diet beginning 4 days after infection. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with SW, LK, and DD did not affect the growth, FE, PER, or plasma chemistry of rockfish. However, dietary inclusion of SW, LK, and DD lowered the mortality of rockfish following infection with S. iniae.

  • The optimum temperature and salinity for long-distance transportation of rockfish Sebastes schlegeli were investigated by assessing hematological characteristics and hemocyte mortality. The possible effects of the interaction of temperature and salinity on these attributes were also investigated. No significant difference was found in hematocrit and hemoglobin among experimental conditions. Glucose levels were highest in fish exposed to salinities of 34 psu ($4^{\circ}C$), 18 psu ($4-6^{\circ}C$) and 10 psu ($4-8^{\circ}C$). Cortisol levels were elevated in the lowest temperature group ($4^{\circ}C$), but upper limits decreased with decreasing salinity. AST and ALT increased as temperature decreased at salinities lower than 26 psu. The ratio of living cells was 99.0-99.6% in all experimental groups. The percentage of necrotic cells was highest in fish exposed to salinities of 34 psu ($4^{\circ}C$), 18 psu ($6-8^{\circ}C$), and 10 psu ($4-8^{\circ}C$). The percentage of necrotic cells decreased significantly as temperature and salinity decreased, indicating that both salinity and the interaction of salinity and temperature affected cell necrosis.
